Investigation of single bubble behavior under rolling motions using multiphase MPS method on GPU

  • Study of single bubble behavior under rolling motions can prove useful for fundamental understanding of flow field inside the modern small modular nuclear reactors. The objective of the present study is to simulate the influence of rolling conditions on single rising bubble in a liquid using multiphase Moving Particle Semi-implicit (MPS) method. Rolling force term was added to 2D Navier-Stokes equations and a computer program was written using C language employing OpenACC to port the code to GPU. Computational results obtained were found to be in good agreement with the results available in literature. The impact of rolling parameters on trajectory and velocity of the rising bubble has been studied. It has been found that bubble rise velocity increases with rolling amplitude due to modification of flow field around the bubble. It has also been concluded that the oscillations of free surface, caused by rolling, influence the bubble trajectory. Furthermore, it has been discovered that smaller vessel width reduces the impact of rolling motions on the rising bubble. The effect of liquid viscosity on bubble rising under rolling was also investigated and it was found that effects of rolling became more pronounced with the increase of liquid viscosity.

  • In the field of fluid dynamics, the sloshing effects are most common and significant problem. It is usually appeared in the tank filled with fluid which is on the main structure, thus, sloshing effects and its impact load may affect to entire system. For the sloshing effects analysis, impact loads due to tank motion is generally investigated theocratically, experimentally and numerically. The difficulty of sloshing phenomenon is non-linearity induced by large deformation at the free-surface. In this regard, it is well known issue that the repeatability on the sloshing problems is very low. In this study, moving particle semi-implicit method was employed to simulate sloshing problem and then the results were compared with corresponding experiments captured by high accuracy high speed camera. The results from numerical simulation was compared to experimental results.

Development of Numerical Simulation of Particle Method for Solving Incompressible Flow (비압축성 유동 해석을 위한 입자법 수치 시뮬레이션 기술 개발)

  • A particle method recognized as one of gridless methods has been developed to investigate incompressible viscous flaw. The method is more feasible and effective than conventional grid methods for solving the flaw field with complicated boundary shapes or multiple bodies. The method is consists of particle interaction models representing pressure gradient, diffusion, incompressibility and the boundary conditions. In the present study, the models in case of various simulation condition were checked with the analytic solution, and applied to the two-dimensional Poiseuille flow in order to validate the developed method.

  • The flooding and overtopping due to unexpected large ocean wave may occur serious problems to environments and structures. Generally fixed wave breakers and several structures were installed to prevent such damages, however, they may affect to environments and charted path of ships badly. In this regard, new type of initial wave breaker was investigated in both of experimentally and numerically. For the experiments, conceptual devices were built by authors with stereo vision system. The moving particle semi-implicit method was adopted for simulation. It is revealed that the initial wave breaker reduce the damages from ocean waves by energy dissipated earlier. Furthermore, the effects of position of the initial wave breaker was also considered.

Numerical analysis of melt migration and solidification behavior in LBR severe accident with MPS method

  • In Lead-based reactor (LBR) severe accident, the meltdown and migration inside the reactor core will lead to fuel fragment concentration, which may further cause re-criticality and even core disintegration. Accurately predicting the migration and solidification behavior of melt in LBR severe accidents is of prime importance for safety analysis of LBR. In this study, the Moving Particle Semi-implicit (MPS) method is validated and used to simulate the migration and solidification behavior. Two main surface tension models are validated and compared. Meanwhile, the MPS method is validated by the L-plate solidification test. Based on the improved MPS method, the migration and solidification behavior of melt in LBR severe accident was studied furthermore. In the Pb-Bi coolant, the melt flows upward due to density difference. The migration and solidification behavior are greatly affected by the surface tension and viscous resistance varying with enthalpy. The whole movement process can be divided into three stages depending on the change in velocity. The heat transfer of core melt is determined jointly by two heat transfer modes: flow heat transfer and solid conductivity. Generally, the research results indicate that the MPS method has unique advantage in studying the migration and solidification behavior in LBR severe accident.

  • The particle based computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method, which follow Lagrangian approach for fluid dynamics, fluid particle behavior by tracking all particle calculation physical quantities of each particle. According to basic concept of particle based CFD method, it is difficult to satisfy continuum theory and measure influences from neighboring particle. Article number density and weight function were used to solve aforementioned issue. Difficulties continuum mean simulate non-continuum particles such as solid including granular and sand. In this regard, the particle based CFD method modified solid particle problems by replacing viscous and surface tension forces friction and drag forces. In this paper, particle interaction model for solid particle friction model implemented to simulate solid particle problems. The broken dam problem, which is common to verify particle based CFD method, used fluid or solid particles. The angle of repose was observed in the simulation results the solid particle not fluid particle.

Three-dimensional Numerical Simulation of Driftwood Accumulation and Behavior Around Bridge Piers (교각 주변 유목 집적 및 거동 특성 3차원 수치모의)

  • The prediction and evaluation of driftwood accumulation around river-crossing structures are essential because driftwood accumulation increases during flood disasters. In this study, the driftwood accumulation and behavior around bridge piers were evaluated via a numerical model that could be employed to analyze three-dimensional turbulent flow and driftwood motion. The moving particle semi-implicit-based model for driftwood motion was sensitive to the number of spheres. The numerical results showed that the approach velocity and the ratio of driftwood length to pier width were the key factors influencing driftwood accumulation, whereas the driftwood density had only a minor influence. Overall, it is expected that this study will contribute to the development of improved risk evaluation indexes for assessing driftwood accumulation around river-crossing structures.
