This paper presents the experimental results of aerodynamic drags of model cars. The effects of cooling air on total drag were introduced by using momentum theorem. Vehicle-liked Ahmed body and 1/5 model car were used to evaluate the increments of drags due to the internal flow. The results were compared with momentum theorem and other's experiments and showed good agreements. In the case of Ahmed body, drags were increased by 22% due to the internal flow and decreased linealy by reducing internal air flow rates and inlet areas. The experiments on 1/5 model car with ill-defined air flow passage showed 10% increment of drag. The results of present study showed that cooling drag could be predicted by momentum theorem within small errors.

Aerodynamic loads for a horizontal axis wind turbine of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) Phase VI rotor in yawed condition were predicted by using the blade element momentum theorem. The classical blade element momentum theorem was complemented by several aerodynamic corrections and models including the Pitt and Peters' yaw correction, Buhl's wake correction, Prandtl's tip loss model, Du and Selig's three-dimensional (3-D) stall delay model, etc. Changes of the aerodynamic loads according to the azimuth angle acting on the span-wise location of the NREL Phase VI blade were compared with the experimental data with various yaw angles and inflow speeds. The computational flow chart for the classical blade element momentum theorem was adequately modified to accurately calculate the combined functions of additional corrections and models stated above. A successive under-relaxation technique was developed and applied to prevent possible failure during the iteration process. Changes of the angle of attack according to the azimuth angle at the specified radial location of the blade were also obtained. The proposed numerical procedure was verified, and the predicted data of aerodynamic loads for the NREL Phase VI rotor bears an extremely close resemblance to those of the experimental data.

The drift force acting on a freely-floating sphere in water of finite depth is studied within the framework of a linear potential theory. A velocity potential describing fluid motion is determined by distribution pulsating sources and dipoles on the immersed surface of the sphere. Upon knowing values of the potential, hydrodynamic forces are evaluated by integrating pressures over the immersed surface of the sphere. The motion response of the sphere in water of finite depth is obtained by solving the equation of motion. From these results, the drift force on the sphere is evaluated by the momentum theorem, in which a far-field velocity potential is utilized in forms of Kochin function. The drift force coefficient Cdr of a fixed sphere increases monotononically with non-dimensional wave frequency ${\sigma}a$. On the other hand, in freely-floating case, the Cdr has a peak value at ${\sigma}a$ of heave resonance. The magnitude of the drift force coefficient Cdr in the case of finite depth is different form that for deep water, but the general tendency seems to be similar in both cases. It is to note that Cdr is greater than 1.0 when non-dimensional water depth d/a is 1.5 in the case of freely-floating sphere.

In this paper, the steady lift force acting on a slender body moving beneath regular wave systems of arbitrary wavelengths and directions of propagation is considered. The momentum conservation theorem and the strip method are used to obtain the hydrodynamic forces acting on the body and affecting its motions on the assumption that the body is slender. In order to obtain the vertical steady force acting on it, or the free surface suction force, the second-order hydrodynamic forces caused by mutual interactions between the components of the first-order hydrodynamic forces are averaged over time. The validity of the method is tested by comparison of the calculated results with experimental data and found to be satisfactory. Through some parametric calculations performed for a typical model, some useful results are obtained as to the depth of submergence of the body, wavelengths, directions, etc.

This paper presents a procedure within the framework of linear potential theory for predicting the lateral drifting forces on a cylinder floating on the free surface of a finite depth water. The disturbance of a regular incident wave caused by the presence of the floating body is represented by the sum of the diffracted and radiated wave potentials, which are determined by using Green's theorem. The lateral drifting forces are calculated by use of momentum theorem, and the scattered waves are expressed in their asymptotic forms. The computed lateral drifting forces on a Lewis form cylinder(b/T=1.25, $\sigma$=0.95) for water depth to draft ratio of 5.0 are compared with the Kyozuka's experimental results for a deep water, and found to be in good agreement. The water depth effects on drifting forces of the same model are also calculated.
We derive a factorization theorem for the jet mass distribution with a given $p^J_T$ for the inclusive production, where $p^J_T$ is a large jet transverse momentum. Considering the small jet radius limit ($R{\ll}1$), we factorize the scattering cross section into a partonic cross section, the fragmentation function to a jet, and the jet mass distribution function. The decoupled jet mass distributions for quark and gluon jets are well-normalized and scale invariant, and they can be extracted from the ratio of two scattering cross sections such as $d{\sigma}/(dp^J_TdM^2_J)$ and $d{\sigma}/dp^J_T $. When $M_J{\sim}p^J_TR$, the perturbative series expansion for the jet mass distributions works well. As the jet mass becomes small, large logarithms of $M_J/(p^J_TR)$ appear, and they can be systematically resummed through a more refined factorization theorem for the jet mass distribution.

In this paper, the second order time mean forces acting on the circular cylinder floating on the free surface of a finite water depth are calculated. Under the assumption that fluid is idea and the wave the linear gravity wave, the velocity potential is calculated by the source distribution method, and the second order time mean lateral and vertical drifting forces are calculated by the direct integration of fluid pressures over the immersed body surface. The comparison of the lateral drifting forces with Rhee's results by momentum theorem shows good agreements. And it is shown that the second order time sinkage forces of a floating circular cylinder cross zero for all water depths.

Time series data of 6-component loads were computed for a horizontal axis wind turbine rotor in yawed operating conditions with both rotating and non-rotating coordinate systems fixed at a center of a rotor hub. In this study, a well-known 20 kW class of the NREL Phase VI rotor was used for a model wind turbine, and this paper focuses on the yaw moments and over-turning moments for the operating wind speed range between 6 to 25 m/s. Unsteady blade element momentum theorem was adopted to get the aerodynamic loads acting on the wind turbine rotor. Computed 6-component loads using the developed UBEM code were compared with those using the NREL FAST program. From the computed results, both yaw and over-turning moments would be basic inputs to determine not only the specification of yawing mechanism but also the design condition of foundation.
A theoretical energy-based model to capture the mechanical response of thick woven composite laminates, which are used in such applications as maritime or aerospace, to high-velocity impact was developed. The dependences of the impact phenomenon on material and geometrical parameters were analysed making use of the Vaschy-Buckingham Theorem to provide a non-dimensional framework. The model was divided in three different stages splitting the physical interpretation of the perforation process: a first where different dissipative mechanisms such as compression or shear plugging were considered, a second where a transference of linear momentum was assumed and a third where only friction took place. The model was validated against experimental data along with a 3D finite element model. The numerical simulations were used to validate some of the new hypotheses assumed in the theoretical model to provide a more accurate explanation of the phenomena taking place during a high-velocity impact.
This paper presents dynamic modelling of a virtual object in augmented reality environments when external forces are applied to the object in real-time fashion. In order to simulate a natural behavior of the object we employ the theory of Newtonian physics to construct motion equation of the object according to the varying external forces applied to the AR object. In dynamic modelling process, the physical interaction is taken placed between the augmented object and the physical object such as a haptic input device and the external forces are transferred to the object. The intrinsic properties of the augmented object are either rigid or elastically deformable (non-rigid) model. In case of the rigid object, the dynamic motion of the object is simulated when the augmented object is collided with by the haptic stick by considering linear momentum or angular momentum. In the case of the non-rigid object, the physics-based simulation approach is adopted since the elastically deformable models respond in a natural way to the external or internal forces and constraints. Depending on the characteristics of force caused by a user through a haptic interface and model's intrinsic properties, the virtual elastic object in AR is deformed naturally. In the simulation, we exploit standard mass-spring damper differential equation so called Newton's second law of motion to model deformable objects. From the experiments, we can successfully visualize the behavior of a virtual objects in AR based on the theorem of physics when the haptic device interact with the rigid or non-rigid virtual object.
