A photocrosslinkable polyphosphazene was used for molecular imprinting. We synthesized polyphosphazene (3) having urea groups for complexation with N-carbobenzyloxyglycin (Z-Gly-OH, template) and chalcone groups for cross-linking reaction. As substituents, 4-hydroxycha1cone (1) and N-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-N'-ethylurea (2) were prepared. Choloro groups of poly(dichlorophosphazene) were replaced by the sequential treatment with sodium salts of compounds 1 and 2, and trifluoroethanol. The template molecule was complexed with the urea groups on the polymer chains via hydrogen bonding. A thin polymer film was prepared by casting a solution of the complex of polymer 3 and the template in dimethylformamide on a quartz cell and irradiated with 365 nm UV light to yield a cross-linked film with a thickness of about $16{\mu}m$. The template molecules in the film were removed by Soxhlet extraction with methanol/acetic acid. The control polymer film was prepared in the same manner for the preparation of the imprinted polymer film, except that the template and triethylamine were omitted. In the rebinding test, the imprinted film exhibited much higher recognition ability for the template than the control polymer. We also investigated the specific recognition ability of the imprinted polymer for the template and its structural analogues. The rebinding tests were conducted using Z-Glu-OH, Z-Asp($O^tBu$)-OH, and Z-Glu-OMe. The imprinted film showed higher specific recognition ability for the template and the lowest response for Z-Asp($O^tBu$)-OH.
Monolithic molecularly imprinted columns were designed and prepared by an in-situ thermal-initiated copolymerization technique for rapid separation of tryptophan and N- CBZ-phenylalanine enantiomers. The influence of polymerization conditions and separation conditions on the specific molecular recognition ability for enantiomers and diastereomers was investigated. The specious molecular recognition was found to be dependent on the stereo structures and the arrangement of functional groups of the imprinted molecule and the cavities in the molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP). Moreover, hydrogen bonding interactions and hydrophobic interactions played an important role in the retention and separation. Compared to conventional MIP preparation procedures, the present method is very simple, and its macroporous structure has excellent separation properties.
Some open tubular (OT) molecule imprinted polymer (MIP) silica capillary columns with templates of camphor derivatives such as 10-camphorsulfonic acid (10-CSA), 10-camphorsulfonamide (10-CS) and camphor-p-tosyl hydrazone (CTH) have been successfully prepared by the prior generalized preparation protocol. The three MIP thin layers of different templates showed quite different morphologies. The chiral selectivity of each MIP column for the template enantiomers was optimized by changing eluent composition and pH. The optimization conditions were found to be different for the three MIPs. This work suggests prospective successful extension of the generalized preparation protocol for OT-MIP silica capillary columns toward templates of a variety of chemical groups.
Molecularly imprinted microsphere for chloramphenicol (CAP) with high adsorption capacity and excellent selectivity is prepared by aqueous suspension polymerization, in which chloramphenicol is used as template molecule and ethyl acetate as porogen. The CAP-imprinted microspheres are used as high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) stationary phase and packed into stainless steel column ($150mm{\times}4.6mm$ i.d.) for selective separation of chloramphenicol. HPLC analysis suggests that chloramphenicol can be distinguished from not only its structural analogs but also other broad-spectrum antibiotic such as erythromycin and tetracycline. In addition, the binding experiments of CAP-imprinted microspheres are carried out in ethanol/water (1:4, V:V), the results indicate that the maximum apparent static binding capacity of molecularly imprinted microspheres is up to 66.64 mg $g^{-1}$ according to scatchard model.
An imprinted potentiometric sensor was developed for direct and selective determination of gabapentin. Sensor is based on carbon paste electrode adapted by graphene oxide that is decorated with silver nanoparticles and mixed with molecularly imprinted polymers nanoparticles using gabapentin as a template molecule. The synthesized nanoparticles were characterized by Fourier transmission infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Under optimal experimental conditions, the studied sensor exhibited high selectivity and sensitivity with LOD of $4.8{\times}10^{-11}mol\;L^{-1}$. It provided a wide linearity range from $1{\times}10^{-10}$ to $1{\times}10^{-3}mol\;L^{-1}$ and high stability for more than 3 mo. The sensor was effectively used for the determination of gabapentin in pharmaceutical tablets and spiked plasma samples.
A group of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) with specific recognition for chiral (S)-ibuprofen were successfully prepared based on hydrogen bonds, utilizing ${\alpha}$-methacrylic acid as a functional monomer. The IR analysis of MIPs showed that the blue- and red-shifted hydrogen bonds were formed between templates and functional monomers in the process of self-assembly imprinting and re-recognition, respectively. According to UV-Vis analysis, we found that the ratio of host-guest complexes between template molecule and functional monomer was 1:1. The effect of cross-linker's quantity on the polymerization was studied by transmission electron microscope (TEM). The adsorption selectivity experiments indicated that MIPs exhibited higher selectivity to (S)-ibuprofen than those to ketoprofen and (R)-ibuprofen, (S)-ibuprofen's structural analogs.
A molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) was synthesized by radiation-induced polymerization (RIP), where the ferulic acid was used as a template molecule, 4-vinylpyridine as a monomer and ethylene glycoldimethacrylate (EGDMA) as a cross-linking monomer. The MIP was packed in a glass column using a slurry method for use in medium pressure liquid chromatography (MPLC). The MPLC column was tested for separation and purification of ferulic acid from the rice oil. When repeated three times, the MPLC separation/purification yielded the ferulic acid with the purity higher than ~99%. The chemiluminescence of the luminal (5-amino-2,3-dihydro-1,4-phtalazinedione) measured on a potato disc slide (5.0 mm thick) was enhanced in the presence of ferulic acid, while, without the ferulic acid, the chemiluminescence of luminol on the potato slice disc was not observed, which suggests the ferulic acid obtained from the rice oil can be useful for immunoassay.

In this study, we have expanded the applicability of the pre-established generalized preparation protocol to MIPs with a neutral template. The ($4S,5R$hyl-5-phenyl-2-oxazolidinone MIP layer was formed inside a pretreated and silanized fused silica capillary, and its chiral separation performance was examined. Optimization of chiral separation was also carried out. This is the very first report of somewhat successful application of the generalized preparation protocol to a MIP with a genuine neutral template.
