  • Up to now. vibration analysis and vibration engineering have been developed, encompassing the aspects of both experimental and analytical techniques. Using experimental modal analysis or modal testing, the mode shapes and frequencies of practical structure can be measured accurately. Curve-Fitting Method is realized through experimental modal identification. In the experimental modal parameter estimation, the estimation of modal damping factor is difficult for complicated and large structure. Also numbers of Selected mode are determined before the procedure. This paper describes the vibration shape of the super-structure model of ship through experimental modal analysis.

  • The least square estimation is used frequently in experimental modal analysis techinque to eliminate noise signals. However, identified modal parameters are sometimes inaccurate, since the least squre estimation is sensitive to noise. In this paper, a new total least squre estimation, which is robust to noise signals, is developed and applied to experimental modal analysis technique such as Prony method and Circle Fit method. Several simulated results show that the proposed method is robuster to noise than conventional method.

  • Nonhysteretic infiltration in nonswelling soil is modelled by the Burgers equation under appropriate physical conditions. For this nonlinear partial differential equation the modal approximation scheme is used for estimating parameters such as soil water diffusivity and hydraulic conductivity. The parameter estimation convergence is proved, and numerical experiments are performed.

  • We present a semi-rigid connection estimation method by using cross modal strain energy method. While rigid or pinned assumptions are adopted for steel frames in traditional modeling via finite element method, the actual behavior of the connections is usually neither. Semi-rigid joints enable connections to be modeled as partially restrained, which improves the quality of the model. To identify the connection stiffness and update the FE model, a newly-developed cross modal strain energy (CMSE) method is extended to incorporate the connection stiffness estimation. Meanwhile, the relations between the correction coefficients for the CMSE method are derived, which enables less modal information to be used in the estimation procedure. To illustrate the capability of the proposed parameter estimation algorithm, a four-story frame structure is demonstrated in the numerical studies. Several cases, including Semi-rigid joint(s) on single connection and on multi-connections, without and with measurement noise, are investigated. Numerical results indicate that an excellent updating is achievable and the connection stiffness can be estimated by CMSE method.

  • In the first paper of this research$^{(1)}$. a new time series method. directional ARMAX (dARMAX) model-based approach. was proposed for rotordynamics identification. The dARMAX processes complex-valued signals, utilizing the complex modal testing theory which enables the separation of the backward and forward modes in the two-sided frequency domain and makes effective modal parameter identification possible. to account for the dynamic characteristics inherent in rotating machinery. In this second part. an evaluation of its performance characteristics based on both simulated and experimental data is presented. Numerical simulations are carried out to show that the method. a complex time series method. successfully implements the complex modal testing in the time domain. and it is superior in nature to the conventional ARMAX and the frequency-domain methods in the estimation of the modal parameters for isotropic and weakly anisotropic rotor systems. Experiments are carried out to demonstrate the applicability and the effectiveness of the dARMAX model-based approach, following the proposed fitting strategy. for the rotordynamics identification.

  • A model analysis method has been developed in the paper. The method estimates the modal parameters of multiple input-output systems, assesses their quality, and seperates structural modes form computation ones. The modal parameter extraction algorithm is the least squares method with a finite difference model relating input and output time data. The quality of the estimated system model can be assessed in narrow frequency bands by comparing the measured and model predicted responses in time domain with the aid of digital filters. Structural modes can be effectively separated from computational ones using the convergence factor which represents the pole convergence rate. The modal analysis method has been applied to simulated and experimental vibration data to evaluate its utility and limitations.

  • Equivalent volume estimation of the coupler and two coupled microphones has a key role in standard microphone pressure calibration. The equivalent volume of the microphone is determined by the dynamic characteristics of the diaphragm system and front cavity. Therefore the modal parameters of diaphragm system - natural frequency and damping fatter - should be measured explicitly for the estimation of the equivalent volume. The diaphragm system is composed of the vibrating diaphragm, back slit behind diaphragm, pressure equalization vent, and front cavity which are acoustically coupled. In the measurement, the electrostatic actuator was used to excite the system with the swept sine, and the frequency response was obtained. The close actuator in front of the diaphragm must influence the radiation impedance of the system, and then the modal parameters. From the measured frequency response, the natural frequency and the damping factor could be estimated with the Complex exponential method based on the Prony model and the zero crossing real and imaginary plot.

  • This paper presents a rational polynomial approximation method to estimate modal parameters of wind excited structures using incomplete noisy measurements of structural responses and partial measurements of wind velocities only. A stochastic model of the excitation wind force acting on the structure is estimated from partial measurements of wind velocities. Then the transfer functions of the structure are approximated as rational polynomial functions. From the poles and zeros of the estimated rational polynomial functions, the modal parameters, such as natural frequencies, damping ratios, and mode shapes are extracted. Since the frequency characteristics of wind forces acting on structures can be assumed as a smooth Gaussian process especially around the natural frequencies of the structures according to the central limit theorem (Brillinger, 1969; Yaglom, 1987), the estimated modal parameters are robust and reliable with respect to the assumed stochastic input models. To verify the proposed method, the modal parameters of a TV transmission tower excited by gust wind are estimated. Comparison study with the results of other researchers shows the efficacy of the suggested method.

  • The proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) analysis of vibration of a steel frame structure is performed to extract modal parameters. The theoretical background of the POD method is introduced briefly, and this technique is further applied to free vibration displacements of one bay-two story steel frame structure to extract the modal parameters. From the POD analysis of the steel frame structure, it is found that important modal parameters such as true mode shapes, modal kinematic energy, natural frequencies, and damping ratios can be obtained for the building efficiently and in detail. Therefore, it is concluded that the POD method could be one of the useful techniques in analysis of vibration of structures.
