Beating and using chemical agents are common methods to improve physical properties. But the beating is high energy consumption process and chemical agent addition may cause deteriorate waste water quality. Therefore, it is necessary to use more environment-friendly methods. In this study, micro pulp was used in the handsheet making to get improving effects of physical properties without beating treatment and chemicals. Stiffness, thickness and air permeability were increased and strength properties of paper were also improved to some extents by only the micro pulp addition.
Three of the leading computer daylighting simulation programs are compared with physical modeling techniques as a means of predicting daylighting performance of interior spaces. Lumen-Micro, Adeline and Lightscape are compared with physical model experiments under clear sky conditions. The comparative evaluations are conducted on analysis of daylight illuminance ratio(%) depending on model types. The estimated average errors are analyzed on 9.4% in Lumen-Micro, 6.3% in Adeline and 3.4% in Lightscape. Therefore, it is proved that three programs are useful for evaluating daylighting performance in our clear sky condition.

The physical models are useful to understand the soil behaviour. Hence, these tools allow validating analytical theories and numerical data. This paper addresses the design, construction and implementation of a physical model able to simulate the soil liquefaction under different cyclic actions. The model was instrumented with a piezoelectric actuator and a set of transducers to measure the porewater pressures, displacements and accelerations of the system. The soil liquefaction was assessed in three different grain size particles of a natural sand by applying a sinusoidal signal, which incorporated three amplitudes and the fundamental frequencies of three different earthquakes occurred in Colombia. In addition, such frequencies were scaled in a micro shaking table device for 1, 50 and 80 g. Tests allowed identifying the liquefaction susceptibility at various frequency and displacement amplitude combinations. Experimental evidence validated that the liquefaction susceptibility is higher in the fine-grained sands than coarse-grained sands, and showed that the acceleration of the actuator controls the phenomena trigging in the model instead of the displacement amplitude.
A theoretical and experimental study on the combustion process in a constant volume micro combustor is described. Unlike in a macro scale constant volume combustor, the heat loss to the wall plays a major role in flame propagation in a micro micro combustor. In order to analyze the effect of heat loss on combustion phenomena, pressure transition from ignition was measured. A number of cylindrical micro combustors with different diameter and depth were used for experiment to study the effect of length scales and shape factor. The diameter of combustor ranged from 7.5mm to 22.5 mm and the height of cylinder was from 1mm to 4mm. Initial pressure was also varied for the experiment. The diagnostic methods were severely limited due to the size of the apparatus and uncertainties of certain quantities to be measured in a small-scale environment. An analytical method to derive physical quantities that are essential for performance prediction from the pressure measurements is described.
Considering that human body is continuously experiencing mechanical stimuli due to daily activities, the micro-physical environments of cells/tissues should be considered for the successful outcomes in tissue engineering and/or related researches. Obviously, there are many factors involved in cell-based researches. In this presentation, the current trends and some of outcomes are introduced. Through this studies, the roles of mechanical engineering in relation to medical/biological researches are to be emphasized.
The role of nano bio-composites precursor to chitosan are innumerable and are known for having different applications in various branches of physical sciences. The application to the sensor development is relatively new, where only few literature works are available to address the specific and critical analysis of nanocomposites in the subject area. The bio-composites are potential and having greater affinity towards the heavy metals and several micro-pollutants hence, perhaps are having wider implications in the low or even trace level detection of the pollutants. The nano-composites could show good selectivity and suitability for the detection of the pollutants as they are found in the complex matrix. However, the greater challenges are associated using the bio-composites, since the biomaterials are prone to be oxidized or reduced at an applied potential and found to be a hinderance for the detection of target pollutants. In addition, the materials could proceed with a series of electrochemical reactions, which could produce different by-products in analytical applications, resulting in several complex phenomena in electrochemical processes. Therefore, this review addresses critically various aspects of an evaluation of nano bio-composite materials in the electrochemical detection of heavy metals and micro-pollutants from aqueous solutions.

The material removal mechanism of Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) process has been studied for several decades. However, understanding of the material removal mechanism is still a difficult problem because the mechanism involves complicated physical phenomena including plasma. Especially, for a micro-EDM process, due to the influence of the debris that is generated during the machining process, quantitative modeling of EDM becomes more complex. To understand better the effects of the debris in the micro-EDM process experimentally, a new approach has been introduced in this study. Using a specially designed workpiece holder, the debris generated during the EDM with various process conditions has been collected. Then, using a simulated environment using micro-sized metal powders, the influence of the debris during the single EDM discharge has been observed. The effects of EDM process parameters on the debris size and product quality are discussed.

There is an adsorption method using activated carbon as a typical method for removing elemental mercury. Physical characteristics of activated carbon such as specific surface area and volume of pore (micro and meso) have positive effect for mercury adsorption. Activated carbon is carbon-based material with a high specific surface area. This activated carbon can be manufactured through carbonization and activation process. In this process, physical characteristics of specific surface area and pore distribution are changed by controlling operating parameters like temperature, time and reagent of activation. In this study, we evaluated characteristics of activated carbons manufactured from pinewood and coal with the operating parameters. We evaluated mercury adsorption capacities of the activated carbons having excellent physical characteristics and compared those to the commercial activated carbon.
Temporal and spatial variations of size-structured phytoplankton (chlorophyll a) were investigated over an annual cycle (February-October, 2003) to elucidate phytoplankton dynamics in the Juam Reservoir, Chonnam. Physical properties were also measured to investigate the relationship between the properties and temporal and spatial variations of size structured phytoplankton using simple linear regression. Phytoplankton (chlorophyll a) were grouped into three size classes: micro-size(> 20 ${\mu}m$), nano-size (3-20 ${\mu}m$) and pico-size (< 3 ${\mu}m$) in this study. Physical properties included water temperature, light attenuation coefficients, PAR (photosynthetically active radiation) and turbidity. Maximum chlorophyll a was observed in April, 2003 in the lower region whereas a peak of chlorophyll a developed in October, 2003 in the upper region. Large cell-sized phytoplankton (micro-size class)were dominant in the events of the chlorophyll a peaks. Potential mechanisms in the physical properties affecting the size-structured phytoplankton dynamics in the Juam Reservoir were discussed.

Crystallized carbon nitride film that has many stable physical and/or chemical properties has been expected potentially by a new electrical material. However, one of the most significant problems degrading the quality of carbon nitride films is an existence of N-H and C-H bonds from the deposition environment. The possibility of these reactions with hydroxyl group in carbon nitride films, caused by a hydrogen attack, was suggested and proved in our previous reports that this undesired effect could be applied for fabricating micro-humidity sensors. In this study, MIS capacitor and MIM capacitor with $5{\mu}m{\times}5{\mu}m$ meshes were fabricated. As an insulator, carbon nitride film was deposited on a $Si_{3}N_{4}/SiO_{2}/Si$ substrate using reactive magnetron sputtering system, and its dielectric constant, C-V characteristics and humidity sensing properties were investigated. The fabricated humidity sensors showed a linearity in the humidity range of 0 %RH to 80 %RH. These results reveal that MIS and MIM $CN_{X}$ capacitive humidity sensors can be used for Si based micro-humidity sensors.
