Undaria pinnatifida Fucoidan-Rich Extract Recovers Immunity of Immunosuppressed Mice

  • We investigated the immune restoration activity of Undaria pinnatifida fucoidan-rich extract in cyclophosphamide-induced immunosuppressed mice. C57BL/6 mice were intraperitoneally injected with 80 mg/kg of cyclophosphamide (CP) and orally administered with either drinking water (DW), red ginseng extract (RG), or one of three different doses of Undaria pinnatifida fucoidan-rich extract (DSU02 50, 100, and 150 mg/kg). After 14 days, liver, spleen, and whole blood were isolated from each animal. The frequencies of NK and CD3+, CD4+, and CD8+ T cells were significantly increased in splenocytes isolated from the DSU02 100 mg/kg and DSU02 150 mg/kg groups (NK1.1+, 5.4% or 4.9% vs 3.8%; CD3+, 39.3% or 37.9% vs 32.3%; CD4+, 22% or 20.2% vs 17.4%; CD8+, 12.7% or 11.6% vs 10.1%). NK cytotoxicity was enhanced in the DSU02-fed groups at all doses (CP-treated DW, 93.4%; RG, 107.2%; DSU02 50, 107.3%; DSU02 100, 107.3%; DSU02 150, 107.1%), and the proliferation of T cells (CD3+, CD4+, and CD8+) was also greater in the DSU02 100 mg/kg and DSU02 150 mg/kg administered groups compared with the unfed group. Plasma concentrations of TNF-α, IgM, and total IgG from the DSU02 150 mg/kg group were also significantly higher compared with the other groups (TNF-α: CP-treated DW - 21.5 pg/ml, DSU02 150 - 47.1 pg/ml; IgM: CP-treated DW - 82.9 ng/ml, DSU02 150 - 110.8 ng/ml; total IgG: CP-treated DW - 114.4 ng/ml, DSU02 150 - 162.7 ng/ml). We suggest that Undaria pinnatifida fucoidan-rich extract could be a promising candidate for a marine natural immune stimulator.

Optimization of Influencing Factors on Biomass Accumulation and 5-Aminolevulinic Acid (ALA) Yield in Rhodobacter sphaeroides Wastewater Treatment

  • This study aimed to optimize four factors affecting biomass accumulation and 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) yield together with pollutants removal in Rhodobacter sphaeroides wastewater treatment. Results showed that it was feasible to produce biomass and ALA in R. sphaeroides wastewater treatment. Microaerobic, 1,000-3,000 lux, and pH 7.0 were optimal conditions for the highest ALA yield of 4.5 ± 0.5 mg/g-biomass. Under these conditions, COD removal and biomass production rate were 93.3 ± 0.9% and 31.8 ± 0.5 mg/l/h, respectively. In addition, trace elements Fe2+, Mg2+, Ni2+, and Zn2+ further improved the ALA yield, COD removal, and biomass production rate. Specifically, the highest ALA yield (12.5 ± 0.6 mg/g-biomass) was achieved with Fe2+ addition.

Further Electrochemical Degradation of Real Textile Effluent Using PbO2 Electrode

  • A commercial PbO2 electrode was adopted as the anode for the electrochemical degradation of the real textile effluent with the initial COD of 56.0 mg L-1 and the stainless steel plate as the cathode. The effect of the initial pH, the electrolyte flow rate and the cell voltage on the COD, the current efficiency and the energy consumption were investigated without the addition of NaCl or Na2SO4. The experimental results illustrated that the PbO2 electrode can reduce the COD of the textile effluent from 56.0 mg L-1 to 26.0 mg L-1 with the current efficiency of 86.1% and the energy consumption of 17.5 kWh kg-1 (per kilogram of degraded COD) under the optimal operating conditions. Therefore PbO2 electrode as the anode was promising to further electrochemically degrade the real textile effluent.

수력발전댐에서 온실가스 연구 동향 분석 : 국외 사례를 중심으로 (Analysis of Greenhouse Gas Research Trends of Hydropower Dams: Focusing on Foreign Cases)

  • This research summarizes the generating factors of greenhouse gas (carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide) in hydropower dams and related domestic/foreign researches. Microorganisms and eutrophication are the main factors in greenhouse gases in hydropower dam reservoirs. The greenhouse gas emission from the hydropower dam is affected by meteorological factors and dam operation periods, and greenhouse gases are also emitted from the outlets. The fluxes of greenhouse gas emission from the hydropower dams were -926~180,806 mg CO2 m-2d-1, -0.19~3800 mg CH4 m-2d-1, and 0.01~16.1 mg N2O m-2d-1. In South Korea, the study on the greenhouse gas emission from Korean hydropower dams has been rarely, and therefore it is inquired. This research suggested the methods on the greenhouse gas emission from Korean hydropower dams and flux calculation.

백색 LED용 Ca3MgSi2O8:Eu2+ 백색 형광체의 발광특성 (Luminescent Characteristics of Eu2+- Doped Ca3MgSi2O8:Eu2+ White Phosphors for LED)

  • $Ca_3MgSi_2O_8:Eu^{2+}$(x = 0.003, 0.005, 0.007, 0.01, 0.03 mol) white phosphors for Light Emitting Diodes(LED) are synthesized with different concentrations of $Eu^{2+}$ ions using a solid state reaction method. The crystal structures, surface and optical properties of the phosphors are investigated using X-Ray Diffraction(XRD), Scanning Electron Microscope(SEM) and photoluminescence(PL). The X-Ray Diffraction results reveals that the crystal structure of the $Ca_3MgSi_2O_8:Eu^{2+}$ is a monoclinic system. The particle size of $Ca_3MgSi_2O_8:Eu^{2+}$ white phosphors is about $1{\sim}5{\mu}m$, as confirmed by SEM images. The maximum emission spectra of the phosphors are observed at 0.01 mol $Eu^{2+}$ concentration. The decrease in PL intensity in the $Ca_3MgSi_2O_8:Eu^{2+}$ white phosphors with $Eu^{2+}$ concentration is interpreted by concentration quenching. The International Commission on Illumination(CIE) coordinate of 0.01 mol Eu doped $Ca_3MgSi_2O_8$ is X = 0.2136, Y = 0.3771.

Carbon balance and net ecosystem production in Quercus glauca forest, Jeju Island in South Korea

  • Background: To assess the carbon sequestration capacity and net ecosystem productivity (NEP) of Quercus glauca forests, we analyzed the net primary productivity (NPP), carbon storage, and carbon emission of soil in a Q. glauca forest on Jeju Island (South Korea) from 2016 to 2018. Results: The average carbon stock in the above- and below-ground plant biomass was 223.7 Mg C ha-1, while the average amount of organic carbon fixed by photosynthesis was 9.8 Mg C ha-1 yr-1, and the average NPP was 9.6 Mg C ha-1 yr-1. Stems and branches contributed to the majority of the above- and below-ground standing biomass and NPP. The average heterotrophic carbon emission from the soil was 8.7 Mg C ha-1 yr-1, while the average NEP was 1.1 Mg C ha-1 yr-1. Although the carbon stock, carbon absorption, and soil respiration values were higher than those reported in other oak forests in the world, the NEP was similar or lower. Conclusions: These results indicator that Q. glauca forests perform the role of a large carbon sink through the CO2 absorption in the plants in terms of carbon balance. And it is judged to be helpful as data for assessment of carbon storage and flux in the forests and mitigation of elevated CO2 in the atmosphere.

참돔이리도바이러스 감염 돌돔에서 임상적 변화와 viral genome copy number 간의 상관관계 (Correlation between clinical changes and viral genome copy number in rock bream infected with red sea bream iridovirus)

  • In this study, the correlation between clinical changes and RSIV genome copy number was investigated to determine the quantitative criteria for the characteristics of RSIV infection. The rock bream (Oplegnathus fasciatus) was intraperitoneally injected with three different doses (1.0×101, 1.0×103 and 1.0×105 viral genome copies/fish) as low, medium, and high doses, respectively. The clinical signs (spleen enlargement, death) observation and real-time PCR were conducted at 5, 10 and 14 days post-injection. During the experiment, spleen index as a quantitative indicator for spleen enlargement was continuously increased in the medium- (up to 2.26) and high-dose (up to 4.99) challenge groups, respectively. Notably, when the spleen index was over 1.5, 2.0, 2.5 and 3.0, a positive correlation was revealed with average viral genome copy numbers of 2.51, 3.37, 4.97 and 5.43×107 viral genome copies/mg, respectively. Moreover, the threshold of spleen index over 1.5 was 1.0×106 viral genome copies/mg, while the thresholds of spleen index over 2.0 and dead was 2.51×107 viral genome copies/mg and the thresholds of spleen index over 2.5 and 3 was 3.98×107 viral genome copies/mg. These findings suggest the possibility of quantitatively analyzing the characteristics and development process of RSIV infection.

Acacia Dominated Area Exclosures Enhance the Carbon Sequestration Potential of Degraded Dryland Forest Ecosystems

  • Area exclosure is a widely practiced intervention of restoring degraded lands though its impact in sequestering terrestrial and soil carbon is scanty. The study was initiated to investigate the effect of exclosure of different ages on carbon sequestration potential of restoring degraded dryland ecosystems in eastern Tigray, northern Ethiopia. Twelve plots each divided into three layers were randomly selected from 5, 10 and 15 years old exclosures and paired adjacent open grazing land. Tree and shrub biomasses were determined using destructive sampling while herb layer biomass was determined using total harvest. The average total biomass obtained were 13.6, 24.8, 27.1, and 55.5 Mg ha-1 for open grazing, 5 years, 10 years, and 15 years exclosures respectively. The carbon content of plant species ranged between 48 to 53 percent of a dry biomass. The total carbon stored in the 5 years, 10 years and 15 years age exclosures were 39 Mg C ha-1, 46.3 Mg C ha-1, and 64.6 Mg C ha-1 respectively while in the open grazing land the value was 24.7 Mg C ha-1. Carbon stock is age dependent and increases with age. The difference in total carbon content between exclosures and open grazing land varied between 14.3-40 Mg C ha-1. Although it is difficult to extrapolate this result for a longer future, the average annual carbon being sequestered in the oldest exclosure was about 2.7 Mg C ha-1 yr-1. In view of improving degraded area and sequestering carbon, area exclosures are promising options.

산활성 점토를 이용한 수중의 방사성 핵종 Cs+ 흡착 제거 (Adsorptive Removal of Radionuclide Cs+ in Water using Acid Active Clay)

  • 천연 백토를 6M의 황산에 넣어 80 ℃의 온도로 기계적 교반하에서 6시간 동안 가열하여 처리 한 산활성 점토를 수중의 세슘 이온(Cs+)의 제거를 위한 흡착제로서 사용하였다. 천연 백토와 산활성 점토의 물리·화학적 변화를 X-선 형광분광기, 비표면적 분석기, 그리고 에너지 분산형 X-선 분광기를 이용하여 관찰하였다. 천연 백토를 산으로 처리 하는 동안, 천연 백토를 구성하고 있는 결정 격자로부터 Al2O3, CaO, MgO, SO3 and Fe2O3가 일부분 용해되고 결과적으로 활성 부위와 더불어 기공의 부피와 비표면적의 증가를 초래하였다. 산활성 점토는 천연 백토에 비해 비표면적과 기공의 부피가 2배 정도 높았다. 산활성 점토에 의한 Cs+ 흡착은 1 분 내에 가파르게 증가하였고 60 분에 이르렀을 때 평형에 도달하였다. 25 mg L-1의 Cs+ 농도에서, 96.88%의 흡착 효율이 산활성 점토에 의해 성취되었다. Cs+의 흡착 데이터를 흡착 등온선과 반응속도 모델에 도입하였다. 산활성 점토에 의한 Cs+ 흡착 거동은 Langmuir 등온선에 잘 적용되었고 Langmuir의 등온선 계수인 Q는 10.52 mg g-1이 되는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 산활성 점토/물 계에서 Cs+ 흡착은 더 높은 상관계수 R2과 실험값 qe,exp과 계산값 qe,cal 의 근접으로 인해서 유사 일차 반응속도보다는 유사 이차 반응속도에 적합하였다. 연구의 전체적인 결과들은 산활성 점토가 수중으로부터 Cs+을 제거하는데 효율적인 흡착제로 사용될 수 있다는 보였다.

제주시 도로변에서의 에어로졸의 입경별 분포 특성 (Roadside Aerosols Size Distribution Characteristics in Jeju City)

  • Measurements on mass size distribution of roadside aerosols were obtained in downtown Jeju City from July 2018 to May 2020 using an 8-stage cascade impactor sampler and the compositions of aerosols were analyzed. The mass size distribution of total aerosols was bimodal with aerosols existing in both the fine and coarse modes. The mass size distributions of Na+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Cl-, NH4+ and SO42- were unimodal, whereas that of K+ was bimodal. For NO3-, the size distribution in winter and spring was bimodal with the peaks in both fine and coarse modes, whereas for summer and autumn the distribution was unimodal with a peak in the coarse mode. NH4+ was found to co-exist with SO42- in the fine mode with an average molar ratio of [NH4+]/[SO42-] equal to 2.05. Good correlation was observed between NO3- and NH4+ in the fine mode particles in spring and winter. Based on the value of the marine enrichment factor for Cl-, Mg2+, K+, Ca2+ and SO42-, it may be inferred that a major part of the roadside aerosols in downtown Jeju City was largely contributed by terrigenous sources, although the influence of sea salt was normally present.
