  • The carbon nanowall (CNW) is a carbon-based nanomaterials and it was constructed with vertical structure graphenes and it has the highest surface density among carbon-based nanostructures. In this study, we have checked the growth properties of CNW according to the substrate angle. Microwave plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) system was used to grow CNW on Si substrate with methane ($CH_4$) and hydrogen ($H_2$) gases. And, we have changed the substrate angle from $0^{\circ}$ to $90^{\circ}$ in steps of $30^{\circ}$. The planar and vertical conditions of the grown CNWs according to the substrate angle were characterized by a field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). In case of the growth angle increases, our experimental results showed that the length of the CNW was shortened and the content of carbon component was decreased.

  • Diamond-like carbon (DLC) coating was studied to be a good tribological problem-solver due to its low friction characteristics and high hardness. However, generally hydrogenated DLC film has shown a weak thermal stability above $300^{\circ}C$. However, the silicon doping DLC process by DC pulse plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) for the new DLC coating which has a good characterization with thermal stability at high temperature itself has been observed. And we were discussed a process for optimizing silicon content to promote a good thermal stability using various tetramethylsilane (TMS) and methane gas at high-temperature. The chemical compositions of silicon-containing DLC film was analyzed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) before and after heat treatment. Raman spectrum analysis showed the changed structure on the surface after the high-temperature exposure testing. In particular, the hardness of silicon-containing DLC film showed different values before and after the annealing treatment.

  • This study was conducted to survey and inspect the currently operating anaerobic digestion facilities for animal manure. Recently, the number of anaerobic digestion facility for livestock manure is on the rise thanks to growing interest in developing alternative energy. A anaerobic digestion system has been constructed in large scale farms or animal manure public resource center. Currently, most animal manure anaerobic digestion facilities in operation are producing biogas from the pig slurry which contains 97% water. Methane gas can be used to operate a engine generator which then produces electricity. Anaerobic digestate, a by-product of digestion, is mostly utilized as a liquid fertilizer after curing processing. Only in a few cases, it can be discharged after wastewater treatment process. The problem of anaerobic digestate treatment is the imbalance of C/N ratio. The content of N was too high to keep it into normal process.

  • In this paper, the efficiency improvement of the heterojunction with intrinsic thin layer (HIT) solar cells is obtained by optimization process of p-type a-SiC:H as emitter. The optoelectronic of p-type a-SiC:H layers including the optical band-gap and conductivity under the methane gas content variation is conducted in detail. A significant increase in the Jsc by $1mA/cm^2$ and Voc by 30 mV are attributed to enhanced photon-absorption due to broader band-gap of p-a-SiC:H and reduced band-offsets at p-side interface, respectively of HIT solar cells.

  • An obligate methanol-oxidizing bacterium, Methylobacillus sp. strain SK1, which grows only on methanol was isolated from soil. The isolate was nonmotile Gram-negtive rod. It does not have internal membrane system. The colonies were small, whitish-yellow, and smooth. The guanine plus cytosine content of the DNA was 48 mol%. Cellular fatty acids consisted predominantly of large amounts of straight-chain saturated $C_{16:0}$ acid and unsaturated $C_{16:1}$ acid. The major ubiquinone was Q-8, and Q-10 was present as minor component. The cell was obligately aerobic and exhibited catalase, but no oxidase, activity. Poly-.betha.-hydroxybutyrate, endospores, or cysts were not observed. the isolate could grow only on methanol in mineral medium. Growth factors were not required. The isolate was unable to use methane, formaldehyde, formate, methylamine, and several other organic compounds tested as a sole source of carbon and energy. Growth was optimal at 35.deg.C and pH 7.5. It could not grow at 42.deg.C. The doubling time was 1.2h at 30.deg.C when grown with 1.0%(v/v) methanol. The growth was not affected by antibiotics inhibiting cell wall synthesis and carbon monoxide but was completely suppressed by those inhibiting protein synthesis. Methanol was found to be assimilated through the ribulose monophosphate pathway. Cytochromes of b-, c-, and o- types were found. Cell-free extracts contained a phenazine methosulfate-linked methanol dehydrogenase activity, which required ammonium ions as an activator. Cells harvested after the late exponential phase seemed to contain blue protein.ein.

  • Solid fuel reacts with an oxidizer during combustion of a propellant to increase performance. Representative solid fuels are aluminum, cyclotrimethylenetrinitramine (RDX) and octahydro-1, 3,5,7-tetra nitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocin (HMX). During combustion, these compounds generate white smoke by reacting with moisture and produce materials that are harmful to the environment, such as carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and methane gas. This study prepared a high-nitrogen-containing energetic material, hydrazinium 5-aminotetrazolate (HAT), which could be applied as a solid fuel. The compound was characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, and a thermal analysis was measured by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Also, the specific impulses and volumes of detonation gases were calculated using the EXPLO5 program.

  • Hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:H) films were deposited by ECR-PECVD (electron cyclotron resonance-plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition) method with deposition conditions such as ECR plasma source power, gas composition of methane and hydrogen, deposition time and substrate bias voltage. The hydrogen content in the films has been measured by ERDA (elastic recoil detection analysis) using 2.5 MeV $He^{++}$ ion beam. From the results of AES (Auger electron spectroscopy), RBS (Rutherford backscattering spectrometry) and ERDA, the composition elements of deposited film were confirmed the carbon atom and the hydrogen atom. It was observed by FTIR (Fourier transform infrared) that the hydrogen contents in the film varied according to the deposition conditions. In deposition condition of substrate bias voltage, the hydrogen contents were decreased remarkably because the amount of dehydrogenation in films was increased as the substrate bias voltage increased. In the rest deposition conditions, the hydrogen contents in the film were measured in the range 45~55%.

  • This study investigated the effect of varying TS concentration levels using supernatant of food waste. The experiment was performed at varying TS concentration levels ranging from 5% to 10% by a $35^{\circ}C$-mesophilic digestion reactor, dual digestion system with acid and methane fermenters combined. As a result, removal efficiency and stabilization were observed at TS concentration of 7~8%, But the removal efficiency notably decreased at 8% or higher TS level. At a stabilized phase of the reactor, more than $0.3m^3/kg{\cdot}vs$ gas was produced, with phenomena such as salt accumulation and increase of pH level being unnoticed. These results indicate that the increase of anaerobic digestion of food waste supernatant TS content has an effect on reaction and that it is necessary to control and operate concentration within 8%, given that the effect is stronger at 8% or higher.

  • Regional geophysical surveys and geological cal studies on natural gas hydrate (NGH) in the East Sea were carried out by the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (KIGAM) from 2000 to 2004. 16 piston cores, 2270 L-km of multi-channel reflection seismic (MCRS) data and 730 L-km of 3.5kHz Chirp data obtained from the southwestern part of the deep-water Ulleung Basin were analyzed in this study. In piston cores, cracks generally developed parallel to bedding suggest significant gas content. The core analyses showed high total organic carbon (TOC) content, sedimentation rate and heat flow of sediments. These are in favor of the general ion of substantial biogenic methane, which can form the NGH within the stability zone of the near seafloor sediments in the study area. The cores generally show also high residual hydrocarbon gas concentrations for the formation of natural gas hydrates The geophysical indicators of the presence of gas and/or NGH such as bottom simulating reflectors (BSRs), seismic blank Bones, pockmarks and gas seeping features were well defined on the MCRS and Chirp data.

  • In this work, we were investigated the effect of the additive gases on the relationship between bonding structure and mechanical properties of the deposited films when the DLC films were deposited on Si-wafer by the rf-PECVD method with the addition of small amounts of carbon dioxide and nitrogen to the mixture gas of methane and hydrogen. The deposition rate of the films increased as the rf-power increased, while it decreased with increasing the amount of additive gases. Also, as the carbon dioxide gas increased, the hydrogen content in the films decreased but the $sp^3/sp^2$ ratio of the films increased. In case of nitrogen gas, the hydrogen content decreased, however the $sp^3/sp^2$ ratio and nitrogen gas flow rate did not show a specific tendency.
