  • In the present study, we conducted resistance test, propeller open water test and self-propulsion test for a ship's resistance and propulsion performance, using computational fluid dynamics techniques, where a Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations solver was employed. For convenience of mesh generation, unstructured meshes were used in the bow and stern region of a ship, where the hull shape is formed of delicate curved surfaces. On the other hand, structured meshes were generated for the middle part of the hull and the rest of the domain, i.e., the region of relatively simple geometry. To facilitate the rotating propeller for propeller open water test and self-propulsion test, a sliding mesh technique was adopted. Free-surface effects were included by employing the volume of fluid method for multi-phase flows. The computational results were validated by comparing with the existing experimental data.

  • Nowdays CAE has been used for almost all injection molding designs in order to find the best injection conditions. Almost all CAE use 2-D mesh, but the CAE with 2-D mesh can't indicate such as jetting, flow-mark and filling imbalance in multi cavity mold. In this study, we suggested a new 3D meshing. the method which can indicate the filling imbalance in geometrically balanced runner system with Mold Flow MPI 6.1 and we found out that the calculation times are saved. As a feasibility study, we verified that Melt Flipper, RC Pin etc appeared the balanced filling behaviors. of geometrically balanced runner system and Melt Flipper, filling imbalance was indicated more accurately.

  • Flat DMT penetration was analyzed using a finite element model based on a large strain formulation. The ABAQUS/Explicit, a commercial finite element method, was used to study the flat DMT penetration in soils. Then, because the very large mesh distortion occurred due to the penetration of flat DMT, the adaptive meshing technique was utilized to maintain a high quality mesh configuration. The undrained shear strength obtained from the flat DMT is estimated using only the horizontal stress index ($K_{D}$) and so it became necessary to examine using the analysis results obtained from the penetration of the flat DMT. Analysis results show that in normally consolidated region of $K_{D}=2$, the results obtained from the correlations proposed by Marchetti show good agreement with those estimated from the finite element method. The present analysis also shows that in overconsolidated region of $K_{D}>2$, the results obtained from the relationships proposed by Kamei and Iwasaki show good agreement with those provided by the penetration analysis.

  • Fatigue life at seam weldment of thick plate was estimated using the finite element and FEM-FAT(an exclusive fatigue solver). Finite element meshing at toe and root of weldment was based oil Radaj's theory. Also, the results of FE analysis were compared with experimental results in the point of Miner's Rule. The results of FE and FEM-FAT analysis were in accord with experimental results within 60% confidence. This result reveals that above techniques is useful in assessment of seam weldment and to be an alternative method instead of an object experiment.

  • This study proposed efficient method of singular value for inverse problem, linear approximation of contact position and loading in single and double meshing of transmission contact element, using 2-dimension model considered near the tooth by root stress. Determination of root stress is carried out for the gear tooth by finite element method and boundary element method. Boundary element discretization near contact point is carefully performed to keep high computational accuracy. The predicted results of boundary element method are good accordance with that of finite element method.

  • This paper presents a new time-stepping 3-D analysis method coupled with an external circuit with motion equation for dynamic transient analysis of induction machines. In this method, the magneto-motive force (MMF) generated by induced current is modeled as a passive source in the magnetic equivalent network. So, by using only scalar potential at each node, the method is able to analyze induction machines with faster computation time and less memory requirement than conventional numerical methods. Also, this method is capable of modeling the movement of the mover without the need for re-meshing and analyzing the time harmonics for dynamic characteristics. From comparisons between the results of the analysis and the experiments, it is verified that the proposed method is capable of estimating the torque, harmonic field, etc. as a function of time with superior accuracy.

  • This paper presents an efficient modeling method for open cracked beam structures. An equivalent bending spring model is introduced to represent the structural weakening effect in the presence of open cracks. The proposed method adopts the exact dynamic element method (EDEM) to avoid the difficulty and numerical errors in association with re-meshing the structure. The proposed method is rigorously compared with a commercial finite element code. Experiments are also performed to validate the proposed modeling method. Finally, a diagnostic scheme for open cracked beam structures is proposed and demonstrated through a numerical example.

  • A seamless analysis of material behavior incorporating complex geometry and crack- tip modeling is one of greatly interesting topics in engineering and computational fracture mechanics fields. However, there are still large gaps between the industrial applications and fundamental academic studies due to a time consuming detailed modeling. In order to resolve this problem, a numerical method to calculate an energy release rate by virtual crack closure technique was proposed in this paper. Both free mesh method and finite element method have been utilized and, thereafter, robust local and global elements for various geometries and boundary conditions were generated. A validity of the proposed method has been demonstrated through a series of fracture mechanics analyses without tedious crack-tip meshing.
