  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the factors influencing symptom self management (SSM) in the patient with a chronic mental disorder. Method: Data was collected by questionnaires from 204 chronic mental disorders in an outpatient clinic in a General Hospital and Public Mental Health Centers in Seoul and Kyunggi Province. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, pearson correlation coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression, Results: The score of SSM showed a significantly positive correlation with the score of the level of self efficacy (SE) (r=.33, p=.00), social support (SS) (r=.27, p=.00), self care agency (SCA) (r=.36, p=.00) and daily living ability (DLA) (r=.34, p=.00). The score of DLA showed a significantly positive correlation with the score of level of SE (r=.46, p=.00), SS (r=.51, p=.00), and SCA (r=.52, p=.00), The most powerful predictor of SSM was SCA ($14\%$). A combination of SCA, DLA, and SS account for $20 \%$ of the variance in SSM. Conclusion: This study suggests that SCA, DLA, and SS are significant influencing factors on SSM in patients with chronic mental disorders.

  • This study aims to investigate the mental health level of the elderly people living alone and examine the difference in mental health level by socio-demographic factors and analyze the factors impacting on mental health level. The study subjects were 131 elderly people living alone who lived in "G" city. Symptom Check List-90-Revision(SCL-90-R) was used to measure mental health level. The results of this study were as follows. First, the study subjects' mental health level(3.53, 5 rating scale) was very severe and this means the mental health level of elderly people living alone is more severe than the mental health level of general elderly people. The study subjects showed depression symptom most seriously and also had severe somatization symptom. Second, there was significant difference in mental health level by gender and education level among socio-demographic factors. Third, in the final regression model, statistically significant factors impacting on the mental health level of the elderly people living alone were life satisfaction, ADL, IADL, welfare service support, informal support, contact frequency with children, duration of living alone, subjective state of economy. And comprehensive(macro and micro) implications were recommended.

  • Purpose: The purpose of study was to examine the relationship between obesity and its associated factors (psychiatric symptom, duration of illness, type of medication, physical activity, dietary habits, depressive symptom, and stress) in patients with chronic mental illness registered to community mental health welfare centers. Methods: This was a cross-sectional correlation study using a convenience sampling. A total of 392 participants were recruited from community mental health welfare centers. The obtained data were analyzed using binary and multinomial logistic regression. Results: Atypical antipsychotic medication, duration of illness, dietary habits (overeating, and drinking instant coffee) were significantly contributed variables into body mass index (BMI) obesity. Atypical antipsychotic medication and instant coffee were significantly related to abdominal obesity. Conclusion: These results emphasized the needs of tailored obesity-preventive management for the community-dwelling patients with chronic mental illness, topically focusing on the administration of atypical antipsychotic medication, duration of illness, and dietary habits.

  • For the purpose of investigating the subjective symptom of industrial fatigue, a questionnaire survey was carried out on 282 labor workers and 189 managerial workers who were employed at the manufacture of electronic products in two small scale industries. Checklist of industrial fatigue was composed of physical symptoms(10 items), mental symptoms(10 items), and sensory neurotic symptoms(10 items). The results were as follows : 1. Complain rate of fatigue was the highest in "eye strain" of physical symptom, "feel anxious about things" of mental symptom, and "feel stiffness in the neck or the shoulders" of sensory neurotic symptom in labor workers and managerial workers. 2. Managerial workers demonstrated II dominant type (mental or night work type), while labor workers demonstrated I dominant type of fatigue (general type). 3. Mean weighted score of fatigue complaints in labor workers (23.16) was significantly higher than that in managerial workers (20.34). 4. Mean weighted scores of fatigue complaints in male, 5~9 years of work duration, married, 4~5 hours of sleeping time, graduation of high school and college, and large of workload were significantly higher in labor workers than in managerial workers. 5. In poor work condition with temperature, ventilation, illumination and noise, the average weighted score was significantly higher in labor workers than in managerial workers.

  • The purpose of the present study was to examine psychometric properties of the BSI-18 in Korean adults with mental disorders. This study examined internal consistency, test-retest reliability, convergent validity, and a factor structure of the BSI. The sample consisted of 180 adults with mental disorders, who enrolled in mental hospitals and in a day hospital. Data was analysed using reliability analysis, correlation analysis, and confirmatory factor analysis. Major findings were as follows. The Korean version of the BSI showed good internal consistency and test-retest reliability, as well as excellent convergent validity. The original three-factor structure of the BSI-18, proposed by Derogatis, 2001, fitted to the data. These findings indicate that the BSI-18 is a reliable and valid measure as a psychiatric assessment tool and a treatment outcome measure.

The major findings of this study were as follows; Mean scores of psychiatric symptom in manual workers were higher in female, youth, educated, unmarried and divorced, noisy condition, that in clerical workers was higher in aged. Mean scores of psychiatric symptom were highly affected by degree of work autonomy, self-esteem, and self-efficacy in both groups. The higher the work autonomy, self-esteem, and self-efficacy, the lower the mean scores of work stress it showed. Psychiatric symptom index was explained with the work autonomy, self-esteem, self-efficacy through multiple stepwise regression. The annual admission rates were high in highly ranked groups on each psychiatric symptom dimension.

  • This study examined the relationship between spouse satisfaction and depressive symptom among the middle-aged and elderly couples, using dataset of the Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing(KLoSA). The subjects were 6,652 persons aged 45 and over who were living with their spouse. A multiple regression model was used to study an association between spouse satisfaction and depressive symptom, controlling for socio-economic characteristics, health status and behavior, and social support. Also, this paper run three subgroup regression models based on age of subjects (45~54, 55~64, 65 and over), controlling for confounding variables. Authors found that there was negative relationship between spouse satisfaction and depressive symptom (b=-0.022, p<0.0001). This negative relationship was also shown in three subgroup regression models. This study suggested the importance of spouse support for promoting mental health among the middle-aged and elderly couples.

There were three analysis of Climacteric symptoms: physical symptoms, mental symptoms, and sexuality, and a large number of symptoms were reported as physical symptoms with 1.56 points Conclusions. A program of measures to reduce depression in middle-aged women requires active social attention and support to alleviate menopausal symptoms, and further research is needed to determine the relationship between these concerns and support for depression.

  • This study examined the association between marital status and mental health(depression, and suicidal ideation) of Korean adults by age and sex, using 2005 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data. Differences of marital status in depression and suicidal ideation were assessed by age and sex-specific prevalence according to each stage of the life course. Our results indicated that adults who divorced, separated, and widowed had significantly higher risk of poor mental health than married adults. Men with no spouse at the stage of middle and older aged are reported higher in depressive symptom than married men. For the suicidal ideation, men with no spouse had higher risk of suicidal ideation through all stage of life course. Women were more likely to report depressive symptom and suicidal ideation than men through all stage of life course. But we could not found the mental health advantage of marriage among Korean women through all stage of life course. Based on findings, the study clearly indicate that the implication of marriage on mental health could be different for adults of different age group and sex.
