A Study on the Development Process of Sign Language Interpreting Content in the Medical Setting (의료 환경의 수어통역 콘텐츠 개발 과정에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to develop sign language interpreting content in the medical setting that facilitates Deaf people's access to medical services in situations where professional and accurate medical sign language interpreting is insufficient. To achieve the purpose of this study, we conducted a literature review, individual interviews for Deaf people, on-site requirement surveys of sign language interpreters and sign language experts, and medical and sign language expert consultations. Based on this, we developed sign language interpreting content such as main care contextual scenarios, basic medical terms, and medical term descriptions. Through this study, we developed medical sign language content considering the situation and medical importance of Deaf people to promote expertise in the medial sign language area and developed a responsive website of sign language medical dictionary that effectively and efficiently delivers information to Deaf people and sign language interpreters; we realized the need and importance of sign language translation for Deaf people to be the main bodies.

  • 본 논문에서는 인터넷 멀티미디어 수화사전 Web-Sign을 설계 및 구현한다. Web-Sign은 여러 가지의 검색조건에 의한 수화동영상을 화면에 출력하고 관련 정보를 쉽게 찾아 볼 수 있는 특징이 있다. 또한 Web-Sign은 100% JAVA로 구현하였기 때문에 플랫폼과 OS의 영향을 거의 받지 않으며, 애플릿과 어플리케이션으로 모두 배포 가능한 장점을 가지고 있다. 웹 브라우저에 의한 접속은 애플릿을 자동으로 지원하며, 어플리케이션을 이용할 경우 모든 데이터는 On-Line 혹은 Off-Line 형태로 전송이 가능하다. 검색방법은 단어입력, 가나다순서별 선택, 동작정보(수위소)선택, 동작화면에 의한 선택, 수화 교과서〔10〕의 챕터순서별로 선택, 주제별 수화분류에 의한 단어선택 등을 이용할 수 있다. 현재까지 등록된 동영상은 현재까지 총 500 여개이며 각 동영상에 대한 시작 및 끝 화면의 정지영상 1000여개와 빠른 전송을 위한 동영상 1000여개를 참고자료로 가지고 있다. 본 논문에서 제안하는 Web-Sign은 많은 검색방법을 가지고 있고, 다양한 정보를 인터넷을 통해 제공할 수 있으므로, 사용자가 쉽게 접근하여 수화를 익힐 수 있을 것으로 판단된다.

A Study on the Medical Care Utilization and the Health Information in Deafs (농아인의 의료기관 이용과 보건 및 의료정보 요구 조사)

  • Purpose: The purposes of this study were to identify the actual conditions and needs of the health care utilization and health information in deafs. Methods: Forty-one deaf volunteers were interviewed by suwha nursing students. The semi-structured interviews were conducted in sign language at homes and community centers. The instrument developed by researchers consisted of 22 items including demographic information, health care utilization, and open-ended questions. Data were analyzed using content analysis, frequency and percentage. Results: The most discomfort problems were communication difficulty and expression of symptom. The deaf people wanted to learn about diseases and symptoms. The deaf wanted to get information about cancer. Conclusions: Further studies focusing on educational intervention are needed to increase the knowledge level on disease of deaf. The sign language translators are needed to help communication for deaf in health care facilities.

Study on Forearm Muscles and Electrode Placements for CNN based Korean Finger Number Gesture Recognition using sEMG Signals (표면근전도 신호를 활용한 CNN 기반 한국 지화숫자 인식을 위한 아래팔 근육과 전극 위치에 관한 연구)

  • Surface electromyography (sEMG) is mainly used as an on/off switch in the early stage of the study and was then expanded to navigational control of powered-wheelchairs and recognition of sign language or finger gestures. There are difficulties in communication between people who know and do not know sign language; therefore, many efforts have been made to recognize sign language or finger gestures. Recently, use of sEMG signals to recognize sign language signals have been investigated; however, most studies of this topic conducted to date have focused on Chinese finger number gestures. Since sign language and finger gestures vary among regions, Korean- and Chinese-finger number gestures differ from each other. Accordingly, the recognition performance of Korean finger number gestures based on sEMG signals can be severely degraded if the same muscles are specified as for Chinese finger number gestures. However, few studies of Korean finger number gestures based on sEMG signals have been conducted. Thus, this study was conducted to identify potential forearm muscles from which to collect sEMG signals for Korean finger number gestures. To accomplish this, six Korean finger number gestures from number zero to five were investigated to determine the usefulness of the proposed muscles and electrode placements by showing that CNN technique based on sEMG signal after sufficient learning recognizes six Korean finger number gestures in accuracy of 100%.

A Field Research on Multi-Language Sign System in Hospital at the Point of View in Convergent Study - Focused on General Hospital in Busan and South Gyeongsang Province - (융합적 관점에서 본 병원 사인시스템 다중언어 표기 현황 조사 - 부산 및 경남지역 의료기관을 중심으로 -)

  • The study began in recent years with the aim of grasping the nation's medical status following the fast-growing trend of international medical tourism and attracting foreign patients, among other things, Busan, which ranks second in attracting foreign patients after the nation's capital, Seoul, has been highly active in the past eight years, with foreign patients rising by about 426 percent, and Russian patients entering the sea. In addition, Gimhae and Changwon, the Busan-based Gyeongsangnam-do region, ranked first and second in number of foreign residents, and are inhabited by a variety of foreign workers. Medical institutions, such as hospitals, should be able to find directions within hospitals. It is also a space where information in various languages, including Korean, English, Chinese, or Russian, must be delivered in a single medium. Based on this research, the purpose of this research is to provide converged information that helps foreigners who are not familiar with Korean language easily understand the proposed recognition system when visiting hospitals. Therefore, this paper is applied to a multi-language survey of six medical institutions (A, B, C, D, E, F) at the university hospital in Busan, and 10 medical institutions (R, J) in Gimhae, South Gyeongsang Province with high foreign residents. Research results and contents are as follows. First, the results of analyzing the design of the sinusoidal system show that the font uses colorless Gothic fonts, arrows, and pictograms to introduce the design of a typical hospital sign system. Second, the results of the multi-lingual situation were found to have only two languages in the system, such as Korean and English, and to have four languages, including Korean, English, Chinese, and Russian, according to their geographical location. However, it was judged that most medical institutions currently have only two languages (Korean, English) that may cause some discomfort in terms of language for foreign patients in non-English speaking countries. Based on these findings, it is necessary to propose designs that are considered by Koreans as well as foreign users in the use of multilingual hospital sign systems.

Hand Gesture Recognition with Convolution Neural Networks for Augmented Reality Cognitive Rehabilitation System Based on Leap Motion Controller (립모션 센서 기반 증강현실 인지재활 훈련시스템을 위한 합성곱신경망 손동작 인식)

  • In this paper, we evaluated prediction accuracy of Euler angle spectrograph classification method using a convolutional neural networks (CNN) for hand gesture recognition in augmented reality (AR) cognitive rehabilitation system based on Leap Motion Controller (LMC). Hand gesture recognition methods using a conventional support vector machine (SVM) show 91.3% accuracy in multiple motions. In this paper, five hand gestures ("Promise", "Bunny", "Close", "Victory", and "Thumb") are selected and measured 100 times for testing the utility of spectral classification techniques. Validation results for the five hand gestures were able to be correctly predicted 100% of the time, indicating superior recognition accuracy than those of conventional SVM methods. The hand motion recognition using CNN meant to be applied more useful to AR cognitive rehabilitation training systems based on LMC than sign language recognition using SVM.

Status of Employment-Related Qualifications Similar to a Medical Laboratory Technology Major (임상병리기술학 전공 유사 취업연계 자격 현황)

  • This study evaluated the various qualifications that can be linked to employment similar to the medical laboratory technology major. The qualifications for employment outside the medical laboratory technology major are industrial health instructor, doping control officer, audiologist, sign language interpreter, health education specialist, claim adjuster, Korea life underwriter, administrative manager, hospital administrator, insurance review manager, and hospital coordinator. The qualifications for employment similar to the medical laboratory technology major include the clinical research coordinator, clinical research associate, anatomist, analytical chemistry analysts, hazardous materials industry engineers, biotechnologist, biosafety managers, biotechnology technicians, medical device quality officers, animal care nurse, industrial engineer hazardous material, bioprocess engineer, biosafety officer, certified technology consultant, director of medical device quality control, laboratory animal technician, animal nursing technician, and cruise medical manager. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct a social analysis survey of the various qualifications currently held by medical technologists. In addition, it will be necessary to investigate the current status of medical technologists working in other fields. In the future, medical technologists should expand the scope of their work through efforts to strengthen their individual work capacity, share cases, and strengthen their expertise.

Qualitative Study for Barriers for Medication and Health Care Service Use among the Visually Impaired and Hearing Impaired in Korea (시각장애인 또는 청각장애인의 의료기관 이용 및 의약품 안전사용 저해요인 관련 심층면접조사)

  • Objective: The disabled are in a blind spot for obtaining information on drugs, and the pharmacies' counseling on drug use is centered on non-disabled people. Few studies have investigated the current statuses of drug use by type of disability. The purpose of this study is to understand the drug use by type of disability and by life cycle of visually impaired and hearing impaired in Korea. Methods: The study participants consisted of 16 people with visually impairments, 12 people with hearing impairments. One in-depth interview was conducted per participant, and each interview was recorded and documented. Results: Common barriers against safe medication and medical service uses across disability types are 'lack of consideration and service for the disabled, limited access to medical facilities due to disability, limited access to information regarding medication use, psychological anxiety about drug use and side effects, and inconvenience regarding COVID-19 epidemic. The specific factors were 'difficulties in identifying proper medicines and following prescribed dosages' in the case of visually impaired, and 'problems with sign language interpretation system' for the hearing impaired. Conclusion: Disabled people are hindered from using medicines properly due to various factors. Based on the content derived from this study, it is necessary to eliminate the inhibition factors and devise specific measures for the safety of each type of disorder such as developing a method for medication counseling considering disabilities and establishing communication support systems.

  • A healthcare system is a type of medical information system that performs early detection and prevention in diseases by checking one's health condition periodically. Such a healthcare system is based on the signal obtained from the body. However, the developed existing system represents certain differences in the storage and description of vital signs according to medicare devices and the evaluation method of the system. It brings some disadvantages, such as lacks in the interoperability between systems, increases in the development cost of systems, and absence of a unified system. Thus, this study develops a healthcare system based on a meta model. For establishing this objective, this study describes and stores vital sign data based on the standard meta model of HL7 and applies OCL, which is a mathematical specification language, for defining wellness indexes and extracting data in order to evaluate health risk appraisals in health. In addition, this study implements components based on OSGi and assemble them in order to easily extend various devices and systems. By describing vital data based on the meta model, it represents some advantages that it makes possible to ensure the interoperability between systems and introduce the standardization of the evaluation method of health conditions through defining the wellness index using OCL. Also, it provides dear specifications.

Inferential Structure and Reality Problem in Diagnosis of Oriental Medicine (한의 진단의 추론형식과 실재성)

  • Inferential structure and reality problem is a serious issue to O.M.(oriental medicine). The study will analyze this issue through a philosophical and historical comparative study of W.M.M(Western modern medicine) and O.M. First, I presuppose some basic ideas. The first is the division of the 'the philosophy of medicine' and 'the medicine itself'. Second, there is a 'visibility' that discriminate between 'the abstractive concept' and 'the concrete object' in diagnostic terminology. The third is the separation of disease, the entity and disease, the phenomenon. Finally, the distinction between the cause of disease and the nature of disease. Through these basic concepts, this study will analyze O.M's diagnostic methodology, 'Pattern identification of the S.A.S(sign and symptom)'. The results are follows: 1. O.M's views disease as a phenomenon. So, the S.A.S, which is visible, is the disease itself. Tough the analysis and inference of the S.A.S, 證(zheng) the essence is derived. 2. 證(zheng) can be considered as 'the abstractive concept' reflecting the essence of a disease. 3. 證(zheng) is not arrived through causal sequence reasoning but rather by analogical reasoning. 4. 證(zheng) is 'the non-random correlative combination of S.A.S', pattern. These patterns secure the abstractive deduction in reality. that is, The causality, the positivism, the view of disease as entity, and anatomical knowledge are the traits peculiar to W.M.M. But, these properties can not be applied universally to every medical systems. Also, these properties do not indicate the superiority or inferiority of any medical system. 5. 證(zheng) summarizes the patients condition simultaneously with the S.A.S. However, 證(zheng) doesn't necessarily indicate the knowledge about the actual internal organ. That is, Early in O.M.'s history, the diagnostic terminologies including 證(zheng) were analogical reflections of a naive knowledge of internal organs and external environmental factors. Later, the naive knowledge in 證(zheng) changed int new nature, an abstractive concept. The confusion of the concept of disease, the indiscriminate acceptance of Western anatomical knowledge, and the O.M.'s theoretical evolution et are the challenge facing modern O.M. To find solutions, this study looks at the sequence of the birth of W.M.M. and then compares it's system with the O.M. system. At present time, the concept and the system peculiar to O.M. can not be explained by common language. but O.M.'s practitioner can not persist in this manner an: longer. Along with the internal development of O.M., the adjustment of O.M.'s diagnostic terminology needs to be adopted.
