  • Recently, a bed company detected a radon more than Red Politics and became a hot topic of conversation. This has led to increased interest in radon, and a number of free-of-charge bodies have also been established to recognize the dangers of radon. In addition, the Korean Institute of Geological and Resource Research is planning to assist the installation of radon alarm systems in 10,000 households nationwide, free of charge. Since radon is a colorless, odorless and tasteless gas that causes lung cancer, it aims to reduce lung cancer incidence by absorbing radon using bamboo activated carbon as a way to reduce it. Due to the use of bamboo activated carbon, radon concentration per hour tends to decrease as substitution rate increases, and table flow tends to decrease as substitution rate increases. Through this experiment, 30% of the replacement rate of bamboo activated carbon is judged to be the most suitable replacement rate.

  • 5-Hydroxymethyl-2-furaldehyde (5-HMF) is considered one of the main quality indexes of various food products. Its metabolism in humans can potentially lead to carcinogenic compounds. Metallic ions such as Zn, Mg, Mn, and Fe have been reported to enhance 5-HMF formation. Recently, studies on adsorbents that can extract specific organic and inorganic substances with one adsorbent have been conducted. However, simultaneous analysis of organic and inorganic materials typically requires distinct pre-treatment and analytical methods, which increase a lot of labor and cost. In this study, hybrid imprinted polymer (HIP) by mixing 5-HMF imprinted polymer (FIP) and zinc ion imprinted polymer (ZIIP) were generated to extract two analytes, Zn ion and 5-HMF, simultaneously. Physicochemical characterization of HIP was conducted by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and sorption tests. Extraction conditions including adsorbent mixing ratio, adsorbate mixing range, and equilibrium time were optimized. Freundlich adsorption model was as the best-fitting isotherm model to elucidate the adsorption mechanism. Affinity of Zn ion and 5-HMF on HIP was superior to non-HIP. In conclusion, HIP showed reasonable feasibility that could be used as an adsorbent to be used for simultaneous extraction of organic and inorganic compounds present in the sample.

  • This study covers the stages of testing whether the azo dye with chemical name (E)-5-[(4-(benzyl(methyl)amino)phenyl)diazenyl]-1,4-dimethyl-1H-1,2,4-triazol-4-ium zinc (II) chloride (DMT), known as Maxilon Red GRL in the dye industry, can be used as an anticorrosive feasible inhibitory agent, especially in industrial areas other than carpet, yarn and fibre dyeing. These test stages consist of the electrochemical measurement techniques such as potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and linear polarization resistance (LPR) for diverse concentrations and durations. The adsorption of the viewed DMT molecule on the mild steel surface obeyed the Langmuir isotherm. The zero charge potential (PZC) of mild steel was also found to assess the inhibition mechanism in containing DMT solution. The inhibition performance of DMT on the mild steel in a 1.0 M HCl solution was also investigated using methods such as metal microscope, atomic force microscope (AFM) and field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM).

  • Light-activated metal oxide gas sensors have been investigated in recent decades. Light illumination enhances the sensing attributes, including the operational temperature, sensitivity, and selectivity. Unfortunately, high operating temperature is a major problem for gas sensors because of the huge energy consumption. Therefore, the importance of light-activated room-temperature sensing has increased. This paper reviews recent light-activated sensors and their sensing mechanisms with a specific focus on metal oxide gas sensors. Studies use the outstanding ZnO and SnO2 sensors to research photoactivation when illuminated by various sources such as ultraviolet (UV), halogen lamp, or monochromatic light. Photon induction generates electron-hole pairs that increase the number of adsorption sites of gas molecules and ions improving the sensor's sensing properties.

  • A series of carbon nanotube, $C_{60}$, and graphene modified $TiO_2$ nanocomposites were prepared by hydrothermal method. X-ray diffraction, $N_2$ adsorption, UV-Vis spectroscopy, photoluminescence, and Electrochemical impedance spectra were used to characterize the prepared composite materials The results reveal that incorporating $TiO_2$ with carbon materials can extend the adsorption edge of all the $TiO_2$-carbon nanocomposites to the visible light region. The photocatalytic activities were tested in the degradation of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (TCP) under visible light. No obvious difference in essence was observed in structural and optical properties among three series of carbon modified $TiO_2$ nanocomposites. Three series of carbon materials modified $TiO_2$ composites follow the analogous tentative reaction mechanism for TCP degradation. GR modified $TiO_2$ nanocomposite exhibits the strongest interaction and the most effective interfacial charge transfer among three carbon materials, thus shows the highest electron-hole separation rate, leading to the highest photocatalytic activity and stability.

  • Barley or corn tea, which is usually prepared with municipal chlorinated tap water, is commonly consumed by the public as a substitute for the supplied water itself. This is because most people believe that harmful organic and inorganic compounds can be removed from the tap water by the adsorption mechanism during the tea preparation. In this study, three kinds of commercial grain tea materials-roasted barley grains, a tea bag containing barley grain pieces, and roasted corn grains-were tested for metal removal by preparing 1 liter of tea with deionized/distilled water according the manufacturer's recommended preparation procedures, assuming that the water is contaminated with eight selected metals at levels of 50$\mu\textrm{g}$/l. Of the tested teas, barley tea prepared with roasted grains showed the highest removal efficiency for Cu, As, Ni, Co, Pb, and Cd, ranging from 48 to 71%, followed by corn tea with roasted grains and barley tea with a tea bag. Cr was nearly maintained at the initial concentration in all kinds of tea. The Mn levels. however, were elevated during the tea preparation, particularly in both barley teas, probably because the metal was extracted into the water from the tea materials without significant adsorption. Therefore, it should be considered in the ingestion exposure analysis for metals that their concentrations are altered during the tea preparation with roasted barley or corn grain materials.

  • We report a novel method to synthesize nanocomposites composed of titania nanoparticles and phosphotungstate ions with various composition ratios ranging from W/Ti = 12/10 to 12/500 by inducing the electrostatic interaction between the positively charged protonated titania sol-particles and the negatively charged phosphotungstate anions to flocculate and precipitate. The precipitates showed varied features depending on the composition. The precipitate from the tungsten-richest W/Ti = 12/10 reaction is amorphous in its powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Raman spectroscopy data. This material shows the Type II adsorption characteristics in its N2-adsorption isotherm, but with quite low surface area of 34 m2/g. To the contrary, the precipitates from the titanium-richer reactions (W/Ti = 12/50- 12/500) are composed of anatase nanoparticles of 2-6 nm by XRD, TEM and Raman and show the Type I adsorption characteristics. The surface area linearly increases with the titanium content from 131 m2/g for W/ Ti = 12/50 to 228 m2/g for 12/500. The precipitate from the reaction with the intermediate composition W/Ti = 12/20 is composed of anatase nanoparticles and does not have any pore accessible to N2. With the wide variety of the physical properties of the precipitates, the present method can be a novel, viable means to tailor synthesis of nanocomposite materials. A formation mechanism of the precipitates is based on the electrostatic interactions between the titania nanoparticles and phosphotungstate ions.

  • Relation the phage defense mechanism of phage resistant Lactococcus lactis subsp. cremoris ATCC 11602-A1 to its cell wall components was investigated. To determine whether teichoic acid which is known to be one of the phage receptor site present on the cell wall, phage adsorption was examined after treatment 5% TCA(60%$\CIRC $C) and concanavalin A to the cell wall of A1 and parent strain. However, the adsorption rate of two strains did not change. Total amount of phosphate after TCA treatment did not change in both strains, but a difference between the two strains was observed. Ribitol and glycerol, components of teichoic acid, could not be detected in the cell walls of two strains by GC analysis. These results suggest that although teichoic acid was not present in the cell walls of both strains, the composition of cell wall of two strains was not identical. Measurement of amount of protein and SDS-polyacryamide gel electrophoresis were carried out to examine the involvement of cell wall protein in phage resistance, showing that protein is nothing to do with phage adsorption of parent strain, but phage resistance of A1 is related to protein. Cell wall carbohydrates of A1 contained rhamnose, glucose, and galactose. Total amount of carbohydrate of 1% SDS-treated A1 cell wall was reduced to the level of parent strain. The results suggest that phage resistance of A1 was due to the presence of a higher level of carbohydrates then parent strain, and to interaction of carbohydrate and protein.

  • The valorization of swine manure samples, i.e., de-watered cake (SMc) and solid digestate (SMd), in products with beneficial value, i.e., low cost activated carbons (ACs), is studied. For this purpose slow pyrolysis and steam activation at three different duration times are applied. Additionally, the obtained ACs are characterized and tested towards removal of Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions. It is revealed that BET surface area varies in the range of $236-267m^2/g$ for ACs prepared from SMc sample and in the range of $411-432m^2/g$ for ACs prepared from SMd sample. Despite the low determined surface area of prepared ACs, a high total Cr removal capacity is observed occurring through a "coupled adsorption-reduction" mechanism. Higher Cr(VI) removal capacity is demonstrated for ACs having higher surface area ($q_m$ is 140.9 mg/g according Langmuir modelling). Cr(VI) removal is found to be pH dependent with a maximum at pH 1. However at that pH significant amounts of Cr remain in the solution as Cr(III). At pH 2 lower amount of Cr(VI) is removed compensated by a higher removal of Cr(III) resulting in a higher amount of adsorbed $Cr_{tot}$. Therefore adsorption at pH 2 is found to be appropriate. The removal capacity of the studied ACs towards Cr(VI) is almost independent of activation time.

  • Geotrichum sp. MF01, isolated from oil-contaminated soil, utilized methyl ethyl ketone(MEK) as the sole source of carbon and energy. The strain MF01 showed a Michaelis-Menten kinetics on MEK, and the kinetic parameters determined for MEK degradation were; specific removal rate, $r_{max}$ = 0.14 $h^{-1}$; half-saturation constant, $K_m$ = 5.88 mM. The adsorption of MEK by heat-killed strain was 0.62 mg at 8.07 mg MEK indicating that the degradation was the primary removal mechanism over adsorption. Biodegradation of MEK was studied in a biofilter using perlite, vermiculite 0:1, v/v) as supporting material. During 57 days of biofilter operation, $^3h^{-1}$.
