Measures of two types of uncertainty that coexist in the Dempster-Shafer theory are overivewed. A measure of one type of uncertainty, which expresses nonspecificity of evidential claims, is well justified on both intuitive and mathermatical grounds. Proposed measures of the other types of uncertainty, which attempt to capture conflicts among evidential claims, are shown to have some deficiencies. To alleviate these deficiencies, a new measure is proposed. This measure, which is called a measure of discord, is not only satisfactory on intuitive grounds, but has alos desirable mathematical properties. A measure of total uncertainty, which is defined as the sum of nonspecificity and discord, is also discussed. The paper focuses on conceptual issues. Mathematical properties of the measure of idscord are only stated ; their proofs are given in a companion paper.
In this paper, we introduce the new general concept of usual expansiveness which is called "positively weak measure expansiveness" and study the basic properties of positively weak measure expansive C1-differentiable maps on a compact smooth manifold M. And we prove that the following theorems. (1) Let 𝓟𝓦𝓔 be the set of all positively weak measure expansive differentiable maps of M. Denote by int(𝓟𝓦𝓔) is a C1-interior of 𝓟𝓦𝓔. f ∈ int(𝓟𝓦𝓔) if and only if f is expanding. (2) For C1-generic f ∈ C1 (M), f is positively weak measure-expansive if and only if f is expanding.
This paper suggests a measure constraint locus for characterization of the performance of a subtask for a redundant robot. The measure constraint locus are the loci of points satisfying the necessary constraint for optimality of measure in the joint configuration space. To uniquely obtain an inverse kinematic solution, one must consider both measure constraint locus and self-motion manifolds which are set of homogeneous solutions. Using measure constraint locus for maniqulability measure, the invertible workspace without singularities and the topological property of the configuration space for linding equilibrium configurations are analyzed. We discuss some limitations based on the topological arguments of measure constraint locus, of the inverse kinematic algorithm for a cyclic task. And the inverse kinematic algorithm using global maxima on self-motion manifolds is proposed and its property is studied.

Objective : To propose a new measure for effective monitoring of intraoperative somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP) and to validate the feasibility of this measure for evoked potentials (EP) and single trials with a retrospective data analysis study. Methods : The proposed new measure (hereafter, a slope-measure) was defined as the relative slope of the amplitude and latency at each EP peak compared to the baseline value, which is sensitive to the change in the amplitude and latency simultaneously. We used the slope-measure for EP and single trials and compared the significant change detection time with that of the conventional peak-to-peak method. When applied to single trials, each single trial signal was processed with optimal filters before using the slope-measure. In this retrospective data analysis, 7 patients who underwent cerebral aneurysm clipping surgery for unruptured aneurysm middle cerebral artery (MCA) bifurcation were included. Results : We found that this simple slope-measure has a detection time that is as early or earlier than that of the conventional method; furthermore, using the slope-measure in optimally filtered single trials provides warning signs earlier than that of the conventional method during MCA clipping surgery. Conclusion : Our results have confirmed the feasibility of the slope-measure for intraoperative SEP monitoring. This is a novel study that provides a useful measure for either EP or single trials in intraoperative SEP monitoring.
A simple measure of uncertainty importance based on normalized metric distance to quantify the entire change of cumulative distribution functions (CDFs) has been developed for use in probability safety assessments (PSAs). The metric distance measure developed in this study reflects the relative impact of distributional changes of inputs on the change of an output distribution, white most of the existing uncertainty importance measures reflect the magnitude of relative contribution of input uncertainties to the output uncertainty. Normalization is made to make the metric distance measure a dimensionless quantity. The present measure has been evaluated analytically for various analytical distributions to examine its characteristics. To illustrate the applicability and strength of the present measure, two examples are provided. The first example is an application of the present measure to a typical problem of a system fault tree analysis and the second one is for a hypothetical non-linear model. Comparisons of the present result with those obtained by existing uncertainty importance measures show that the metric distance measure is a useful tool to express the measure of uncertainty importance in terms of the relative impact of distributional changes of inputs on the change of an output distribution.
Present study was performed to compare different types of teleoperation performance measures. A modified Cooper-Harper rating scale and a distance measure were newly introduced and compared to two traditional measures, the error rate and time-to-completion. Participants performed a simulated telerobotic task with varying visual display interfaces. The results of correlation analyses revealed that the modified Cooper-Harper ratings had a close association with the error rate measure. The distance measure also appeared to be a consistent performance measure, which accounted for both the error rate and time-to-completion. A further analysis, however, showed that the effectiveness of each performance measure varied with the level of task difficulty. The results imply that the choice of performance measure should be made based on the task difficulty as well as the particular task being studied. The results revealed here also have implication for performance measures of various display and control systems including aircraft navigation displays and tactical displays.
Representation and quantification of fuzziness are required for the uncertain system modelling and controller design. Conventional results show that entropy of fuzzy sets represent the fuzziness of fuzzy sets. In this literature, the relations of fuzzy enropy, distance measure and similarity measure are discussed, and distance measure is proposed. With the help of relations of fuzzy entropy, distance measure and similarity measure, fuzzy entropy is proposed by the distance measure. Finally, proposed entropy is applied to measure the fault signal of induction machine.
The purpose of this study is to provide mathematical knowledge for supporting the didactical knowledge on circular measure and radian in the high school curriculum. We show that circular measure related to arcs can be mathematically justified as an angular measure and radian is a well defined concept to be able to reconcile the values of trigonometric functions and ones of circular functions, which are real variable functions. Radian has two-fold intrinsic attributes of angular measure and arc measure on the unit circle, in particular, the latter property plays a very important role in simplifying the trigonometric derivatives. To improve students's low academic achievement in trigonometry section, the useful advantage and the background over the introduction of radian should be preferentially taught and recognized to students. We suggest some teaching plans to practice in the class of elementary and middle school for enhancing teachers' and students' understanding of radian.
