The small precision spindle motors in the high value-added products including the visible home appliances such as DLP projector require not only the energy conversion devices but also high efficiency, low vibration and sound operation. However, the spindle motors using the conventional ball bearing and sintered porous metal bearing have following problems, respectively: the vibration by the irregularity of balls and the short motor life cycle by the ball's abrasion and higher sound noises by dry contact between shaft and sleeve. In this paper, it is proposed that the spindle motor with a fluid dynamic bearing is suitable for the motor to drive the color wheel of the DLP(digital lightening processor) in the visible home appliances. The proposed spindle motor is composed of the fluid dynamic bearing with both the radial force and the thrust force. The fluid dynamic bearing is solved by the finite element analysis of the mechanical field with the Reynolds equations. The magnetic part of spindle motor, which is a type of Brushless DC Motor, is designed by the electro-magnetic field analysis coupled with the Maxwell equation. And the load capacity and the friction loss of fluid dynamic bearing are analyzed to bearing clearance variation by the fabrication error in designed motor. The design of the proposed motor is implemented by the load torque caused by the eccentricity and the unbalance of the fluid dynamic bearing when the motors are fabricated in error. The prototype of the motor with the fluid dynamic bearing is manufactured, and experiment results show the vibration, sound, and phase current at no load and color wheel load of the motors in comparison. The high performance characteristics with the low vibration, the low acoustic noise and the optimal mechanical structure are verified by the experimental results.

A series of nonequilibrium molecular dynamics(NEMD) simulations are performed to investigate the kinetic energy and velocity distributions of molecules in shock waves. In the simulations, argon molecules are used as a medium gas through which shock waves are propagating. The kinetic energy distribution profiles reveals that as a strong shock wave whose Mach number is 27.1 is applied, 39.6% of argon molecules inside the shock wave have larger kinetic energy than molecular ionization energy. This indicates that an application of a strong shock wave to argon gas can give rise to an intense light. The velocity distribution profiles in z direction along which shock waves propagate clearly represent two Maxwell-Boltzmann distributions of molecular velocities in two equilibrium regions and one bimodal velocity distribution profile that is attributed to a nonequilibrium region. The peak appearing in the directional temperature in z direction is discussed on a basis of the bimodal velocity distribution in the nonequilibrium region.
Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (FEMFC) is a strong candidate for future automobile and power generation because of its high power density, low emission and low operation temperature. The major concerns of the gas diffusion layer (GDL) inside a FEMFC is water management. The GDL is typically comprised of carbon for electrical conductivity and PTFE for Hydrophobicity. In this simulation, GDL flooding was investigated using a simplified approach method of an established equation models(Fick' Law, Darcy, Law, Stefan-Maxwell diffusion). The performance of GDL was shown using result of the inner heat, water density and oxygen density of the cell using model equations. The catalyst layer mode in FEMFC showed results of effectiveness factor, Butler-volmer and hydrogen flux density. These results are interesting because the influence of several factors has been shown and the information will be helpful for fuel cell design.
High-frequency electromagnetic (EM) wave propagation associated with borehole ground-penetrating radar (GPR) is a complicated phenomenon. To improve the understanding of the governing physical processes, we employ a finite-difference time-domain solution of Maxwell's equations in cylindrical coordinates. This approach allows us to model the full EM wavefield associated with crosshole GPR surveys. Furthermore, the use of cylindrical coordinates is computationally efficient, correctly emulates the three-dimensional geometrical spreading characteristics of the wavefield, and is an effective way to discretise explicitly small-diameter boreholes. Numerical experiments show that the existence of a water-filled borehole can give rise to a strong waveguide effect which affects the transmitted waveform, and that excitation of this waveguide effect depends on the diameter of the borehole and the length of the antenna.

A wavelet-Galerkin scheme based on the time-dependent Maxwell's equations is presented. Daubechies wavelet with two vanishing wavelet moments is expanded for basis function in spatial domain and Yee's leap-frog approach is applied. The shifted interpolation property of Daubechies wavelet family leads to the simplified formulations for inhomogeneous media without the additional matrices for the integral or material operator. The stability condition is formulated. The dispersion characteristics are analyzed and compared with those of finite difference time domain and multiresolution time domain methods. The analyses show the excellent trade-off between the regularity and the support width of the basis function. Although the basis function has only two vanishing wavelet moments, it is enough to provide negligible dispersive error in the numerical analysis and its compact support enables only several involved terms per nodes. The storage effectiveness, execution time reduction and accuracy of this scheme are demonstrated by calculating the resonant frequencies of the homogeneous and inhomogeneous cavities.

In recent years, gradually increasing interest has been directed to the use of terahertz technology in nondestructive testing and non-invasive measurements, and terahertz time domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) has become a key technology in such applications. This paper deals with the terahertz pulse generation from cadmium telluride via optical rectification process of femto-second infrared laser pulses. The measured terahertz spectrum is compared with the result of model calculation based on space-time domain nonlinear Maxwell equations for coherent frequency mixing process. The propagation process of terahertz and infra-red pulses in the material as well as the surface interference and free space diffraction effects are also considered. The experimental results are in good agreements with the calculated spectrum.
In this study, we propose an analytical model for studying magnetic fields in radial-flux permanent-magnet eddy-current couplings by considering the effects of slots and iron-core protrusions on the eddy currents. We focus on the analytical prediction of the air-gap field by considering the influence of eddy currents induced in conducting bars. In the proposed model, the permanent magnet region is treated as the source of a time-varying magnetic field and the moving-conductor eddy current problem is solved based on the resolution of time-harmonic Helmholtz equations. The spatial harmonics in the air gap and in slots, as well as the time harmonics are all considered in the analytical calculation. Based on the proposed field model, the electromagnetic torque is computed by using the Maxwell stress tensor method. Nonlinear finite element analysis is performed to validate the analytical model. The proposed model can be used for permanent-magnet eddy-current couplings with any slot-pole combination.
Interpretation of time-domain electromagnetic (TEM) data has been made mostly based on one-dimensional (1-D) inversion scheme in Korea. A proper interpretation of TEM data should employ 3-D TEM forward and inverse modeling algorithms. This study developed a 3-D TEM modeling algorithm using a finite difference time-domain (FDTD) method with staggered grid. In numerically solving Maxwell equations, fictitious displacement current is included based on an explicit FDTD method using a central difference approximation scheme. The developed modeling algorithm simulated a small-coil source configuration to be verified against analytic solutions for homogeneous half-space models. Further, TEM responses for a 3-D anomaly are modeled and analyzed. We expect that it will contribute greatly to the precise interpretation of TEM data.
Dielectric constant measurement has drawn much attention in the investigation of the properties and contaminations of subsurface. In this study, by varying the frequency from 75 kHz to 12 MHz, dielectric constant was measured for the weathered granite soil and Jumunjin sand having different water contents and dry density. The dielectric constant of sand showed the dispersive behavior indicating that dielectric constant decreased with frequency of an electric field. And the dielectric constant of soil increased as water content and/or dry density increased due to the decrease of air portion and/or the increase of amount of water molecules which could contribute to the development of orientation polarization. The dielectric constant of sand showed a linear relationship with the moisture density, considering both water content and dry density. At low frequency, the dielectric constants calculated by Maxwell's, Topp's and CRIM equation deviated from measured values. It could be explained by the fact that those equations did not consider dispersive behavior of dielectric constant with the frequency.

This manuscript tends to investigate influences of nanoscale and surface energy on a static bending and free vibration of piezoelectric perforated nanobeam structural element, for the first time. Nonlocal differential elasticity theory of Eringen is manipulated to depict the long-range atoms interactions, by imposing length scale parameter. Surface energy dominated in nanoscale structure, is included in the proposed model by using Gurtin-Murdoch model. The coupling effect between nonlocal elasticity and surface energy is included in the proposed model. Constitutive and governing equations of nonlocal-surface perforated Euler-Bernoulli nanobeam are derived by Hamilton's principle. The distribution of electric potential for the piezoelectric nanobeam model is assumed to vary as a combination of a cosine and linear variation, which satisfies the Maxwell's equation. The proposed model is solved numerically by using the finite-element method (FEM). The present model is validated by comparing the obtained results with previously published works. The detailed parametric study is presented to examine effects of the number of holes, perforation size, nonlocal parameter, surface energy, boundary conditions, and external electric voltage on the electro-mechanical behaviors of piezoelectric perforated nanobeams. It is found that the effect of surface stresses becomes more significant as the thickness decreases in the range of nanometers. The effect of number of holes becomes significant in the region 0.2 ≤ α ≤ 0.8. The current model can be used in design of perforated nano-electro-mechanical systems (PNEMS).
