  • In this paper, we propose a new three-dimensional (3D) photon-counting integral imaging reconstruction method using a merging reconstruction process and maximum likelihood estimation (MLE). The conventional 3D photon-counting reconstruction method extracts photons from elemental images using a Poisson random process and estimates the scene using statistical methods such as MLE. However, it can reduce the photon levels because of an average overlapping calculation. Thus, it may not visualize 3D objects in severely low light environments. In addition, it may not generate high-quality reconstructed 3D images when the number of elemental images is insufficient. To solve these problems, we propose a new 3D photon-counting merging reconstruction method using MLE. It can visualize 3D objects without photon-level loss through a proposed overlapping calculation during the reconstruction process. We confirmed the image quality of our proposed method by performing optical experiments.

  • We derive some approximate maximum likelihood estimators(AMLEs) and maximum likelihood estimator(MLE) of the scale parameter in the half-triangle distribution based on progressively Type-II censored samples. We compare the proposed estimators in the sense of the mean squared error for various censored samples. We also obtain the approximate maximum likelihood estimators of the reliability function using the proposed estimators. We compare the proposed estimators in the sense of the mean squared error.

  • The inverse Weibull distribution (IWD) can be readily applied to a wide range of situations including applications in medicines, reliability and ecology. It is generally known that the lifetimes of test items may not be recorded exactly. In this paper, therefore, we consider the maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) and Bayes estimation of the entropy of a IWD under generalized progressive hybrid censoring (GPHC) scheme. It is observed that the MLE of the entropy cannot be obtained in closed form, so we have to solve two non-linear equations simultaneously. Further, the Bayes estimators for the entropy of IWD based on squared error loss function (SELF), precautionary loss function (PLF), and linex loss function (LLF) are derived. Since the Bayes estimators cannot be obtained in closed form, we derive the Bayes estimates by revoking the Tierney and Kadane approximate method. We carried out Monte Carlo simulations to compare the classical and Bayes estimators. In addition, two real data sets based on GPHC scheme have been also analysed for illustrative purposes.

  • These days, interests on land cover classification using not only multi-sensor data but also thematic GIS information, are increasing. Often, although we have useful GIS information for the classification, the traditional classification method like maximum likelihood estimation technique (MLE) does not allow us to use the information due to the fact that the MLE and the existing computer programs cannot handle GIS data properly. We proposed a new method for updating the image classification using multi-spectral and multi-temporal images. In this study, we have simultaneously extended the MLE to accommodate both multi-spectral images data and land cover data for land cover classification. In addition to the extended MLE method, we also have extended the empirical likelihood ratio estimation technique (LRE), which is one of non-parametric techniques, to handle simultaneously both multi-spectral images data and land cover data. The proposed procedures were evaluated using land cover map based on Landsat ETM+ images in the Anmyeon-do area in South Korea. As a result, the proposed methods showed considerable improvements in classification accuracy when compared with other single-spectral data. Improved classification images showed that the overall accuracy indicated an improvement in classification accuracy of $6.2\%$ when using MLE, and $9.2\%$ for the LRE, respectively. The case study also showed that the proposed methods enable the extraction of the area with land cover change. In conclusion, land cover classification produced through the combination of various GIS spatial data and multi-spectral images will be useful to involve complementary data to make more accurate decisions.

  • This study examined a radar signal active cancelation technique, which is a theoretical way of achieving stealth by employing a baseband process that involves sampling the incoming hostile radar signal, analyzing its characteristics, and generating countermeasure signals to cancel out the linear-FM signal of the hostile radar signal reflected from the airborne target. To successfully perform an active cancelation, the effects of errors in the countermeasure signal were first analyzed. To generate the countermeasure signal that requires very fast and accurate processing, the down-sampling technique with the suboptimal maximum likelihood estimation (sMLE) scheme was proposed to improve the speed of the estimation process while preserving the estimation accuracy. The simulation results showed that the proposed down-sampling technique using a 2048 FFT size yields substantial power reduction despite its small FFT size and exhibits similar performance to the sMLE scheme using the 32768 FFT size.

  • In this paper, we derive the maximum likelihood estimator(MLE) and some approximate maximum likelihood estimators(AMLEs) of the scale parameter in an exponentiated half logistic distribution based on progressively Type-II censored samples. We compare the proposed estimators in the sense of the mean squared error(MSE) through a Monte Carlo simulation for various censoring schemes. We also obtain the AMLEs of the reliability function.

  • This paper considers the reliability estimation of a two-component shared-load system based on Freund model. Maximum likelihood estimator, order restricted maximum likelihood estimator and uniformly minimum variance unbiased estimator of the reliability function for the system are obtained. Performance of three estimators for moderate sample sizes is studied by simulation.

  • In this paper, two estimation methods(least square estimation and maximum likelihood estimation) were compared for Weibull distribution and Type I censoring. Data obtained by Monte Carlo simulation were analyzed using two estimation methods and analysis results were compared by MSE(Mean Squared Error). Comparison results show that maximum likelihood estimator is better for censored data and complete data with more than 30 samples and least square estimator is better for small size complete data(less than and equal to 20 samples).

  • Knowing the time of the process change could lead to quicker identification of the responsible special cause and less process down time, and it could help to reduce the probability of incorrectly identifying the special cause. In this paper, we propose the maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) for the process change point when a control chart is used in monitoring the mean of a process in which the observations can be modeled as an AR(1) process plus an additional random error. The performance of the proposed MLE is compared to the performance of the built-in estimator when they are used in EWMA charts based on the residuals. The results show that the proposed MLE provides good performance in terms of both accuracy and precision of the estimator.
