It is usually very expensive and often impractical to extend a load test on a large pile until collapse. Many graphical or mathematical methods have been attempted to estimate the bearing capacity from the results of a vertical load test without having to load the pile to failure. According to Fellenius, the failure value must be based on some mathematical rule and generate a repeatable value that is independent of scale relations and the opinions of the individual interpreter. This study presents the method which may estimate the failure load using the maximum curvature to apply Kondner's theory from the results of a loading test which cannot be extended until the failure load is reached.

The present study proposes a simple equation to straightforwardly determine the potential plastic hinge length in boundary element of reinforced concrete shear walls. From the idealized curvature distribution along the shear wall length, a basic formula was derived as a function of yielding moment, maximum moment, and additional moment owing to diagonal tensile crack. Yielding moment and maximum moment capacities of shear wall were calculated on the basis of compatability of strain and equilibrium equation of internal forces. The development of a diagonal tensile crack at web was examined from the shear transfer capacity of concrete specified in ACI 318-11 provision and then the additional moment was calculated using the truss mechanism along the crack proposed by Park and Paulay. The moment capacities were simplified from an extensive parametric study; as a result, the equivalent plastic hinge length of shear walls could be formulated using indices of longitudinal tensile reinforcement at the boundary element, vertical reinforcement at web, and applied axial load. The proposed equation predicted accurately the measured plastic hinge length, providing that the mean and standard deviation of ratios between predictions and experiments are 1.019 and 0.102, respectively.

Prestressed concrete girder bridge has been one of the most widely used bridges in the world because of its excellent construction feasibility, economic efficiency, serviceability, and safety. In certain situations, the prestressing tendon is supposed to be bent by the construction error and the radius of curvature at the continuous joint of PSC girders, and this leads to the loss of prestressing force. However, this kind of prestress loss is not considered in the design and construction processes. This study proves that the prestress loss occurs at the continuous joint due to the local bending of tendon by the construction error or the radius of curvature. Also, a method that can reduce this type of prestress loss is proposed, and proved by the experiment. The result shows that maximum 10% of prestress loss occurs at the continuous joint and the proposed block-out method can reduce the prestress loss ratio by maximum 5%, approximately. This means that the block-out method can enhance the prestressing efficiency of continuous PSC girder bridges.

Measurements of the local heat transfer coefficients on a hemispherically concave surface with a round oblique impinging jet were made. The liquid crystal transient method was used for these measurements. This method, which is a variation of the transient method, suddenly exposes a preheated wall to an impinging jet while video recording the response of liquid crystal for the surface temperature measurements. The Reynolds number used was 23,000 and the nozzle -to -jet distance was L/d=2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 and the jet angle was $\alpha$=0$^{\circ}$, 15$^{\circ}$, 30$^{\circ}$and 40$^{\circ}$. In the experiment, the maximum Nusselt number at all region occurred at L/d(equation omitted)6 and Nusselt number decreases as the inclined jet angle increases. For the normal jet the contours of constant Nusselt number are circular and as the jet is inclined closer and closer to the surface the contours become elliptical shape. The decreasing rate of the Nusselt number at X/d> 0(upstream) on a surface curvature are higher than those on a flate plate and the decreasing rate of the Nusselt number at X/d <0(downstream) on a surface curvature are lower than those on a flate plate. And also, the decreasing rate of local Nusselt number distribution at X/d <0(upstream) exhibit lower than with X/d <0(downstream) as jet angle increases. The second maximum Nusselt number occurred at long distance from stagnation point as jet angle increases.
This study is a series of experimental investigations of the buckling strengths of eccentrically compressed, cold-formed, stainless-steel, circular, hollow-section beam columns. The principal parameters that were used in this study were the slenderness ratios (Lk/r = 30, 50, 70) and the magnitude of eccentricity e(one way: 0, 25, 50, 75, and 100mm: the other way: 0, 12.5, 25, 37.5, and 50mm) on the asymmetrical end-moment of a double curvature. The objectives of the study were to obtain the maximum loads through an experiment and to compare the experimental behaviors with the analysis results. The ultimate buckling strength of the square section members were evaluated using a numerical method, in accordance with the bending moment-axial force(M-P) interaction curves. The behavior of each specimen was displayed in the form of the strength-displacement and moment-angle(M-$\theta$) relationship.
For performance-based design using nonlinear static analysis, it is required to predict the inelastic behavior of structural members accurately. In the present study, a nonlinear numerical analysis was peformed to develop the method describing the moment-curvature relationship of structural wall with boundary confinement. Through the numerical analysis, variations of behavioral characteristics and failure mechanism with the arrangement of vertical reinforcement and the length of boundary confinement were studied. According to the analysis, the maximum moment-carrying capacity of structural walls with adequately confined boundary elements is developed at the moment the unconfined concrete reaches the ultimate compressive strain. Walls with flexural re-bars concentrated on the boundaries fails in a brittle manner. As vortical re-bars in the web increases, the brittle failure is prevented and a ductile failure occurs. Based on the findings, moment-curvature curves for walls with a variety of re-bar arrangement were developed. According to the proposed relationships, deformability of the structural walls wth boundary confinement increases as the compressive strength of the confined concrete increases compared to the applied compressive force.
Any pre-existed delamination defect present during manufacturing or induce during service loading conditions in the wingskin adherend invariably shows a greater loss of structural integrity of the spar wingskin joint (SWJ). In the present study, inter-laminar delamination propagation at the critical location of the SWJ has been carried out using contact and multi-point constraint finite elements available with commercial FE software (ANSYS APDL). Strain energy release rates (SERR) based on virtual crack closure technique have been computed for evaluation of the opening (Mode-I), sliding (Mode-II) and cross sliding (Mode-III) modes of delamination by sequential release of multi point constraint elements. The variations of different modes of SERR are observed to be significant by considering varied delamination lengths, material properties of adherends and radius of curvature of the SWJ panel. The SERR rates are seen to be much different at the two pre-embedded delamination ends. This shows dissimilar delamination propagation rates. The maximum is seen to occur in the delamination front in the unstiffened region of the wingskin. The curvature geometry and material anisotropy of SWJ adherends significantly influences the SERR values. Increase in the SERR values are observed with decrease in the radius of curvature of wingskin panel, keeping its width unchanged. SWJs made with flat FRP composite adherends have superior resistance to delamination damage propagation than curved composite laminated SWJ panels. SWJ made with Boron/Epoxy (B/E) material shows greater resistance to the delamination propagation.

In the design of horizontally curved plate girder web panels, it is required to evaluate accurately the elastic buckling strength under pure shear. Currently, elastic shear buckling coefficients of curved web panels stiffened by transverse intermediate stiffeners are determined by assuming conservatively that straight web panels without curvature are simply supported at the juncture between the flange and web. However, depending upon the geometry and the properties of the curved plate girder, the elastically restrained support may behave rather closer to a fixed support. The buckling strength of curved girder web is much greater (maximum 38%) than that of a straight girder calculated under the assumption that all four edges are simply supported in Lee and Yoo (1999). In the present study, a series of numerical analyses based on a 3D finite element modeling is carried out to investigate the effects of geometric parameters on both the boundary condition at the juncture and the horizontal curvature of web panel, and the resulting data are quantified in a simple design equation.

The present study showed that a quantitative analogy of the fully developed laminar flows inorthogonally rotating rectangular ducts and stationary curved rectangular ducts of arbitrary aspect ratio could be established. In order to clarify the similarity of the two flows, the dimensionless parameters $K_{LR}$ =Re/√Ro and Rossby number Ro= $w_{m}$/$\Omega$d in a rotating strait duct were used as a set corresponding to Dean number $K_{LC}$ =Re/√λand curvature ratio λ=R/d in a stationary curved duct. Under the condition that the value of Rossby number and curvature ratio was large enough, the flow field satisfied the ‘asymptotic invariance property’: there were strong quantitative similarities between the two flows such as friction factors, flow patterns, and maximum axial velocity magnitudes for the same values of $K_{LR}$ and $K_{LC}$ .

ITO thin film was deposited on PC substrate in Facing Targets Sputtering (FTS) system with various sputtering conditions. After it is applied to external bending force, we investigated how change the surface and electrical property of as-deposited ITO thin film. As the L(face-plate distance) of substrate decreases, it found that the maximum crack density is increasing at the center position and decreasing crack density as goes to the edge. So to apply same curvature (r) and bending force to PC substrate with ITO thin film, we fixed the L that is equal to curvature radius (2r). Before bending test, ITO thin films that deposited in the input current of 0.4 A and thickness of 200 nm already had biaxial tensile failure because of each different CTE (Coefficient of Thermal Expansion) and Others had been shown no bending or crack. After bending test, all samples had been shown cracks at about 200 times and as increasing the crack density, resistivity increased.
