  • A newly developed flexible active-matrix (AM-) electrophoretic display (EPD) is reported. The AM-EPD features: (1) low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) thin film transistor (TFT) technology, (2) fully integrated scan- and data-drivers, (3) flexibility and light-weight realized by transferring the whole circuits onto a plastic substrate using $SUFTLA^{TM}$ (Surface Free Technology by Laser Annealing/Ablation) process. A large storage capacitor is formed in each pixel so that driving electric field can be kept sufficiently strong during a writing period Two-phase driving scheme, a reset-phase which erases a previous image and a writing-phase for writing a new image, was chosen to cope with EPD's high driving voltage. The flexible AM-EPD has been successfully operated with a driving voltage of 8.5 V.

  • In this study, dynamic boundary element method using mass matrix is derived, using fundamental solutions for the semi-infinite domain. In constituting boundary integral equations for the dynamic equilibrium condition, inertia term in the form of domain integral is transformed into boundary integral form. Corresponding system equations are derived, and a boundary element program is developed. In addition, equations for free vibration is formulated, and eigenvalue analysis is performed. The results from the dynamic boundary element analysis for a tunnel problem are compared with those from the finite element analysis. According to the comparison, boundary element method using mass matrix is consistent with the results of finite element method. Consequently, in tunnel vibration problems, it results in reasonable solution compared with other methods where relatively higher degree of freedoms are employed.

  • In this paper, the new casing oscillator, which is a construction machine and which structure is similar to that of a parallel manipulator with redundancy, is proposed. The singularity analysis of this machine is performed by two different methods. First, the singularities are found by the numerical method at configurations where the rank of the Jacobian matrix becomes deficient. The singularities are outside the workspace. To investigate the physical information on these configurations, the singularities are examined by the geometric method at configurations where the casing oscillator cannot resist the external forces and moments applied to the upper platform due to losing static equilibrium. The results of the geometric method are the same as those of the numerical method. It proves that the new casing oscillator is free from the singularity, which causes serious problems to a parallel manipulator.

  • An unique extraction chromatographic column (TOA: Tri-n-octylamine on Teflon powder) with a two-stage sample loading was prepared to separate Np and Pu from the environmental matrix. Np and Pu were efficiently retained in 4 M $HNO_3$ medium on the column and easily eluted with 0.02 M oxalic acid in 0.16 M HNO$_3$at $95^{\circ}C$. The separated solutions were free from most of the matrix elements and were aspirated into the ICP-MS directly. The decontamination factor for 238U is more than 104. The instrumental detection limit for 237Np was 0.46 pg mL-l ($1.2{\times}10_{-5}$Bq mL-l), and for 239Pu was 0.48 pg mL-l ($1.1{\times}10_{-3}$ Bq mL-l). The feasibility for the determination of both elements was proved by analysing IAEA-135 reference samples, the measured values agreed with the recommended reference value.

  • Brown provided a structure theorem for a class of perfect ideals of grade 3 with type ${\lambda}$ > 0. We introduced a skew-symmetrizable matrix to describe a structure theorem for complete intersections of grade 4 in a Noetherian local ring. We construct a class of perfect ideals I of grade 3 with type 2 defined by a certain skew-symmetrizable matrix. We present the Hilbert function of the standard $k$-algebras R/I, where R is the polynomial ring $R=k[v_0,v_1,{\ldots},v_m]$ over a field $k$ with indeterminates $v_i$ and deg $v_i=1$.

  • It is the intention of this study to synthesize the effects of double-edge cracks on the dynamic characteristics of a beam. The stiffness matrix is first determined for a Timoshenko beam containing two same-line edge cracks. The presented model is then developed for elements with two parallel double-sided cracks, considering the interaction between the stress fields of adjacent cracks. Finally, a finite element code is implemented, to examine the influence of depth and location of double cracks, on the natural frequencies of the damaged system.

  • This paper deals with a new single-phase Z-source matrix converter (SZMC) topology. Unlike other conventional configurations, the proposed SZMC is not only a step-up frequency converter but also a step-down frequency converter and a voltage boost capability. Thus, the proposed SZMC is also called a frequency step-up/down and voltage step-up converter. A safe-commutation strategy is used in SZMC as free-wheeling operation to eliminate voltage spikes on switches. The operating principles and experimental results of the proposed SZMC are presented.

  • This paper considers a design problem of the repetitive control system for linear systems with time-varying norm bounded uncertainties. Using the Lyapunov functional for time-delay systems, a sufficient condition ensuring robust stability of the repetitive control system is derived in terms of an algebraic Riccati inequality (ARI) or a linear matrix inequality (LMI). Based on the derived condition, we show that the repetitive controller design problem can be reformulated as an optimization problem with an LMI constraint on the free parameter.

  • Three-dimensional ultrasound imaging is a new, exciting technology that allows physicians to use ultrasound to view pathology as a volume, thereby enhancing comprehension of patient anatomy. In this paper, a brief history of the 3-D ultrasound imaging is described in accordance with the development of transducer technology. Then, two representative types of 3-D imaging transducers are reviewed with description of the concept and operation principle of each type: mechanical transducer and matrix array transducer. The mechanical transducer is detailed into free-hand scanning and sequential scanning types. Advantages of each transducer over the other and the technical issues for further performance enhancement are also presented.

  • The pathsearching method in switchingmatrix of an electronic switching system depends upon the structure and function of the system. In this paper, an efficient way to construct the switching matrix and a pathsearching method under the full distributed traffic theory in an wideband switching system, which can control not only normal telephone call, but also TV telephone, data communication, videotex and sound, is proposed. And the effectiveness of the method is shown through an example of the pathsearching simulation program.
