The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the current status of a program for an elementary math class for gifted students in Daegu and to propose a remedy. The main results of this thesis are as follows. First, goals of the gifted class and the basic operation direction were satisfactory, however plans for parent training programs and self evaluation of the classes were not presented. Therefore, it needs when and how to do for specific plan of gifted class evaluation and parent training programs. Second, The annual instruction plan has been restricted to the subject matter education and field trips and has not included specific teaching methods in accordance with the contents of learning program. The management of gifted classes, therefore, requires not only the subject matter education and field trips but also output presentations, leadership programs, voluntary activities, events and camps which promote the integral development of gifted students. Third, there is no duplication of content to another grade, and various activities did not cover the whole scope of math topics(eg. number and operation, geometry, measurement, pattern) equally. In accordance with elementary mathematics characteristics, teachers should equally distribute time in whole range of mathematics while they teach students in the class because it is critical to discover gifted students throughout the whole curriculum of elementary mathematics. Fourth, as there are insufficient support and operational lack of material development, several types of programs are not utilized and balanced. It is necessary for teachers to try to find the type of teaching methods in accordance with the circumstances and content, so that students can experience several types of programs. If through this study, we can improve the development, management and quality of gifted math programs, it would further the development of gifted education.
It is very important to help students learn by examining how well students solve math problems. Therefore, in this study, four methods(error analysis by problem type, schematization analysis, area graph analysis, and broken line graph analysis) were constructed to analyze how the connectivity between concepts of middle school functions affects the problem solving results. The students' learning situation was visually expressed to enable intuitive understanding. This analysis method makes it easy to understand the evaluation results of students. It can help students learn by understanding their learning situation. It will be useful in mathematics teaching and learning as it can help students to monitor their own problems and make a self-directed learning plan.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the strengths and weaknesses resulting from a study of elementary mathematics lessons among in-service teachers and to discuss implications for the direction of improvement of the study on elementary mathematics lessons based on teacher learning community. The results of this study showed that the study on elementary mathematics lessons based on teacher learning community improved teacher knowledge related to teaching mathematics, enhanced teacher's accomplishment and self-esteem, made it possible for participant teachers to teach one another, created atmosphere in which teachers investigated instruction via sustainable and systematic lesson study. However, some limitations were noticed such as regulations by the social norms of the teacher learning community, the influence of an expert teacher, teachers' unprofessional decision making, and lack of systematic evaluation and reflection on lessons. Based on these results, this paper closes with critical implications to enhance teacher learning community.
Teaching is delicate, complicated, and demanding work, and especially beginning teachers set forth their difficulties in preparing and implementing mathematics instruction. It is important to ensure the quality of beginning mathematics teachers' instruction above a consistent level because such affirmation justifies the national policy on teacher education as well as the individual efforts of preservice teachers in South Korea. The current study collected mathematics lessons of the two beginning teachers who graduated from the same teacher training institute and worked at the same high school. The findings reported what features their lessons have with regard to the learning environment, engaging students in learning, deepening student learning, and using representations of the edTPA in order to identify what can or cannot be expected in their mathematics instruction. The instruction of the one teacher was assessed middle or more than middle scores throughout the rubrics, but the other one had lower scores. Based on these findings, this study suggested the implications for teacher education in ways of improving the quality of instruction of beginning mathematics teachers.
This study looked into the procedures of and the status on the implementation of the new mathematics curriculum at the secondary school level(7th through 10th grades). This study examined schools and the teachers were subjects for the actual implementation of the mathematics classroom. More specifically it examined the degree to which the particular innovation ideas of the 7th mathematics curriculum(i.e., reorganization , student-centeredness, diversification/specialization) were being carried out at every stage of the curriculum implementation. Nationwide survey for teachers including students were conducted along with classroom observation and teacher interviews. For an in-depth study into the process and the product of mathematics curriculum implementation, two provincial boards of education participated in the project as research partners. Detailed documentation on the classroom practices were made in order to provide schools and teachers including policy makers with relevant and practical suggestions for further improvement of mathematics curriculum implementation. It was found that mathematics teachers generally were reconstructing the contents giving the priority to the needs of the learners. The concept of learner-centered-ness was reflected in teaching objectives, contents, instructional methods and evaluation. In most schools observed, emphasis was given to the reorganization of the curriculum contents fitting to the concept of 'student-centered' curriculum. The efforts by teachers to diversity and/or specialize the curriculum contents with consideration of various educational conditions such as student readiness, student abilities, classroom equipment and facilities, school locations and environment were found.
Depending on the type of textbook, the word and mathematical notation expression used in high school mathematics textbooks varied and there were also some differences on the mathematical definition and the content description methods. Not only the composition of textbooks but also various expressing ways of textbooks have significant impacts on teaching and learning of teacher and student. The diversity of expression had pros and cons like both sides of a coin. There is a positive aspect that we can pursue pedagogical diversity. Simultaneously there is a negative aspect that the possibility of acting as a learning burden exists in the viewpoint of the student and the equality of evaluation may be undermined. In this study, Preferentially we focused on analyzing the actual situation rather than judging what is more appropriate about the diversity of words and notation expressions used in mathematics textbooks which is based on the current curriculum. For this purpose, we analyzed 56 kinds of mathematics textbooks based on the 2009 revised mathematics curriculum, and presented four aspects(terms expressing, notations expression, mathematical definition, content description method) with examples about differences of the various expressions used in textbooks including 'terms and notations'.
In this study, on the basis of the seventh national mathematics curriculum, the achievement standards were developed to specify the objectives and contents of teaching-learning and the assessment standards were also developed to differentiate students' levels of achievement at school mathematics. The achievement standards were developed on the following guidelines; 1) to present the minimum standards based on the national curriculum, 2) to develop the standards based on the order of curriculum, 3) to suggest the minimum but ultimate achievement target, 4) to comprise not only of the intellectual but also of psychological spheres such as knowledge, function, attitude, aptitude, etc., and 5) to suggest the standards comprehensively and concretely. The standards were developed on the basis of the middle areas of contents of the curriculum in order not to be too comprehensive, nor to be too detailed. Learning activities, on the other hand, were provided for the assistance of instructions with emphasis on creativity rather than on the routine instruction. The assessment standards were established based on the following principles; 1) to establish the assessment methods, contents, and situations which are to be used for assessment, 2) to establish the criteria of classifying the assessed into the upper, intermediate and lower levels, 3) to develop the assessment standards in a proportionate balance to achievement standards, 4) to establish the intermediate level as a standard, and 5) to establish the minimum level in the contents, concepts, values and attitudes of basic learning. This study also suggested the exemplary test items including short-answer and open-ended questions while putting emphasis on students' real performance to increase their ability in solving problems rather than in calculating. In addition to the test items, it introduced the grading system developed to grade the items with concrete guidelines and to report students' achievement on doing mathematics.

Considering the recent trend highlighting the importance of STEAM education, the purpose of this study is to develop scientific research activities and STEAM technology material using the smart device sensor. Drawing a picture on a map with GPS drawing application which contains elements such as IT, geographic information, sports and arts, we intent not just to install a smartphone application but also to get synergic effects and help with real cartography and geographic classes which are not experienced in the middle school curriculum, by using the functions of a smart device. Through the development of STEAM teaching material, we intended to provide a clear direction towards advancement by developing creative teaching data and teaching models which encourage students to improve their interest and creativity in science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics.
The purpose of this study is to suggest the new way about performance assessment through analyzing about what changes are occurred on mathematical attitude and interest by performance assessment as comparing and analyzing the effect on learners' mathematical preferences and learning attitudes through the application of teaching and evaluating model utilizing portfolio products using mathematical history which is one of the various ways of performance assessment. That can satisfy the feature of performance assessment that realizes instruction and assessment simultaneously on the first grade at high school. Also, it can reduce the teachers' works, search the potential ability of students, realize level type curriculum, and draw out the learners' interests because it is a self-leading instruction that consists of student-centered learning. For the purpose of this study, the role of mathematical history and its advantage and the way of utilizing it in mathematical history by referring to sundry records were studied. Evaluation, the way of performance assessment and scoring were also considered to design portfolio teaching and evaluating model using mathematical history. To solve the another tasks for this study, mathematical preference factors and mathematical learning attitude factors are used. Mathematical preference factors divide into confidence, flexibility, will, curiosity, reflection, and value and then make 4 questions each factor. And mathematical learning attitude factors divide into self-esteem, attitude, and learning habit and then make 10 questions each factor. These factors need to be reorganized the materials which are made by Korean Education Development Institute(1992) to be agreed with the purpose of this study.
This study examined and compared the level of mathematical anxiety according to the types of students' characteristics based on the former research study showing that there exists a close relationship between characteristics and mathematical anxiety. The subjects of this study are 159 students enrolled in Chungnam Gongju and Kyunggi-do Ahnyang. They were categorized into groups following various standards such as preference index(E-1, S-N, T-F, J-P), ability & disposition, 16 types of characteristics. Then these were tested for types and the level of mathematical anxiety by the factors of mathematical anxiety. The results show that Type E students show the greatest anxiety in learning motivation, and Type N students in the pedagogy of teaching and loaming for the subfactor of mathematical anxiety. Further, Type NT students respond strongly to the pedagogy of teaching and loaming in psychological ability and disposition, which shows that mathematical anxiety and sub-factors of mathematical anxiety are closely somehow related.
