  • In order to cultivate talented people with national economic influence in the rapidly changing 21st- century modern society, STEM(Science Technology Engineering Mathematics) education has been emphasized in advanced countries such as America and England. In South Korea, STEAM(Science Technology Engineering Arts Mathematics) education is emphasized by adding Arts. The objective of STEAM education is to strengthen the interest and motivation of learners, to focus on experience, exploration, experimentation, to solve convergent thinking and real-life problems, rather than cramming method of teaching and memorization. This study identifiesan instructional design for converged English, the world's official language, and science which is found in nearly all disciplines. With the development of the 4th industrial revolution based on the PBL model, learners participate in their lessons voluntarily for problem-solving skills. The instructional design based on the ADDIE model consists of 5 procedures: Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. The goal of fostering talented people with national economic influence is also important, and the teacher in education must recognize the importance of STEAM education and an appropriate instructional design should be studied constantly.

  • The notion of metaphor has been increasingly popular in research of mathematics education. In particular, metaphor becomes a useful unit for analysis to provide a profound insight into mathematical reasoning and problem solving. In this context, this paper takes metaphor as an analytic unit to examine the relationship between objectivity and subjectivity in mathematical reasoning. Specifically, the discourse analysis focuses on the code switching between literal language and metaphor in mathematical discourse. It is shown that the linguistic code switching is parallel with the switching between two different kinds of mathematical knowledge, that is, factual knowledge and mathematical imagination, which constitute objectivity and subjectivity in mathematical reasoning. Furthermore, the pattern of the linguistic code switching reveals the dialectical relationship between the two poles of mathematical reasoning. Based on the understanding of the dialectical relationship, this paper provides some educational implications. First, the code-switching highlights diverse aspects of mathematics learning. Learning mathematics is concerned with developing not only technicality but also mathematical creativity. Second, the dialectical relationship between objectivity and subjectivity suggests that teaching and teaming mathematics is socioculturally constructed. Indeed, it is shown that not all metaphors are mathematically appropriated. They should be consistent with the cultural model of a mathematical concept under discussion. In general, this sociocultural perspective on mathematical metaphor highlights the sociocultural organization of teaching and loaming mathematics and provides a theoretical viewpoint to understand epistemological diversities in mathematics classroom.

  • The primary purpose of this treatise is to suggest the solutions as follows for the errors concerning the triangle determination and congruence in every Korean mathematics textbook for 7th graders: showing that SsA, along with SSS, SAS, ASA, should also be included as the condition for triangle determination, congruence and similarity; proving that contrary to what has been believed, minimality applies only to congruence and similarity but not to determination; examining related Euclidean propositions; discussing the confusion about the characteristics of determination and congruence; and considering the negative effects of giving definite figures in construction education. The secondary purpose is to analyze the significance of triangle determinant that is not dealt with in either Euclid's Elements or the text books in the U.S. or Japan, and suggest a way to effectively deal with triangle determination and congruence in education.

  • In this paper, we primarily focus on the perspectives about creative process, which is how mathematical creativity emerged, as one aspect of mathematical creativity and then present a desirable task characteristic to measure and program characteristics to develop mathematical creativity. At first, we describe domain-generality perspective and domain-specificity perspective on creativity. The former regard divergent thinking skill as a key cognitive process embedded in creativity of various discipline domain involving language, science, mathematics, art and so on. In contrast the researchers supporting later perspective insist that the mechanism of creativity is different in each discipline. We understand that the issue on this two perspective effect on task and program to foster and measure creativity in mathematics education beyond theoretical discussion. And then, based on previous theoretical review, we draw a desirable characteristic on instruction program and task to facilitate and test mathematical creativity, and present an applicable task and instruction cases based on Geneplor model at the mathematics class in elementary school. In conclusion, divergent thinking is necessary but sufficient to develop mathematical creativity and need to consider various mathematical reasoning such as generalization, ion and mathematical knowledge.

  • This paper is a study on the perception of current competency and expected competency of engineering freshmen by extracting core competencies acquired from university education. It also aims to suggest proper way for engineering university education. This study extracts competencies in the following five areas as core competencies: 'knowledge on major area', 'cultural ability', 'foreign language ability', 'basic learning ability', 'intercommunication ability'. To achieve this purpose, this study surveyed 'C' university engineering department freshmen (584 students) with questionnaires about their perception of core competencies. The results are as follows. First, engineering freshmen perceived current competencies were weak in every area, especially their capacities in 'foreign language ability' area were perceived to be weakest. Their demand for education is the highest in 'foreign language ability' area, and the second higher in 'knowledge on major area'. Secondly, there exists meaningful difference between perception of current competency and expected competency depending on the gender, high school department (science/liberal arts), high school location, types of college admissions, and types of mathematics in NAST. According to these results, this study suggests enhancement of foreign language (English) education in engineering department, design and implementation of various educational program to overcome individual difference, promoting importance of competencies in the 'cultural abilty' and 'intercommunication abilty', necessity of continuous adjustment and complementation for engineering educational program through accumulation of feedback processes, activation of career education through engineering education and special programs.

  • Today's healthcare, intelligent robots, smart home systems, and car sharing are already innovating with cutting-edge information and communication technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things, the Internet of Intelligent Things, and Big data. It is deeply affecting our lives. In the factory, robots have been working for humans more than several decades (FA, OA), AI doctors are also working in hospitals (Dr. Watson), AI speakers (Giga Genie) and AI assistants (Siri, Bixby, Google Assistant) are working to improve Natural Language Process. Now, in order to understand AI, knowledge of mathematics becomes essential, not a choice. Thus, mathematicians have been given a role in explaining such mathematics that make these things possible behind AI. Therefore, the authors wrote a textbook 'Basic Mathematics for Artificial Intelligence' by arranging the mathematics concepts and tools needed to understand AI and machine learning in one or two semesters, and organized lectures for undergraduate and graduate students of various majors to explore careers in artificial intelligence. In this paper, we share our experience of conducting this class with the full contents in http://matrix.skku.ac.kr/math4ai/.

  • Technology-based convergence education is being emphasized for students in the era of the fourth industrial revolution. In math education, students need to increase their capabilities in the future by having them experience mathematical problems using robots and sensors, a key technology in the era of the fourth industrial revolution. To this end, it is necessary to present educational uses for educational robots in relation to math and curriculum from a 'mathematics education perspective' and analyze its educational use in relation to the mathematics and curriculum, considering the role of mathematics at the base of the process of exploring real-world phenomena and solving problems. Based on the analysis of Van Hiele levels of development in geometry and the LOGO activity level of Olson et al.(1987), this study analyzed and presented the level of LEGO Mindstorm activity, a representative educational Robot capable of collecting and analyzing data and programming in the form of block language, in the first to fourth level.
