This study began with the discovery of the concept of frequency density in Singapore textbooks and in a set of subject contents of the UK's General Certificate of Secondary Education. To understand the mathematical meaning of frequency density, the mathematical connection of frequency density was considered in terms of mathematics internal connections and mathematics external connections. In addition, the teaching method of frequency density was introduced. In terms of mathematical internal connections, the connections among the probability density function, relative frequency density, and frequency density in high school statistics were examined. Regarding mathematical external connections, the connection with the density concept in middle school science was analyzed. Based on the mathematical connection, the study suggested the need to introduce the frequency density concept. For the teaching method of frequency density, the Singapore secondary mathematics textbook was introduced. The Singapore textbook introduces frequency density to correctly represent and accurately interpret data in histograms with unequal class intervals. Therefore, by introducing frequency density, Korea can consistently teach probability density function, relative frequency density, and frequency density, emphasizing the mathematical internal connections among them and considering the external connections with the science subject. Furthermore, as a teaching method of frequency density, we can consider the method provided in the Singapore textbook.

The purpose of this study is to derive implications for the design of the next curriculum by analyzing the textbooks designed as a new subject in the 2015 revised curriculum. In the mathematics curriculum documents of , 'related learning elements' are presented instead of 'learning elements'. 'Related learning elements' are defined as mathematical concepts or principles that can be used in the context of artificial intelligence, but there are no specific restrictions on the amount and scope of dealing with 'related learning elements'. Accordingly, the aspects of 'related learning elements' reflected in the textbooks were analyzed focusing on the textbook format, the amount and scope of contents, and the ways of using technological tools. There were differences in the format of describing 'related learning elements' in the textbook by textbook and the amount and scope of handling mathematics concepts. Although similar technological tools were dealt with in each textbook so that 'related learning elements' could be used in the context of artificial intelligence, the focus was on computations and interpretation of results. In order to fully reflect the intention of the curriculum in textbooks, a systematic discussion on 'related learning elements' will be necessary. Additionally, in order for students to experience the use of mathematics in artificial intelligence, substantialized activities that can set and solve problems using technological tools should be included in textbooks.
Recently, in school mathematics, classes using mathematical modeling are attracting attention to improve students' mathematical problem-solving skills. However, existing preceding studies have been conducted mainly on elementary, middle, and high school or in-service teachers, so it may be limited to apply the contents and results of the research as it is to pre-service teachers, who are future professors. Therefore, this study examined the school days' experiences of mathematical modeling for pre-service elementary school teachers. In addition, in order to provide a positive experience for mathematical modeling, mathematical modeling problem creation activities were conducted through group activities, and the results and their perceptions were examined. As a result of the study, elementary school preservice teachers had very little experience with mathematical modeling activities during their elementary, middle, and high school days. It was found that there is a deficiency in creating an appropriate mathematical modeling problem suitable for the level of elementary school students. In addition, it was found that they had a positive perception of mathematical modeling after participating in the study. Based on these results, implications for the training process for preservice teachers were suggested.
The purposes of the study were to analyze STEAM instructional materials to find research trends on STEAM instructional program and to develop mathematics-centered STEAM instructional program for middle school second graders. To conduct this study, the researcher collected total 123 research papers and thesis focused on the development of STEAM instructional material and deduced implications for the development of mathematics-centered STEAM instrucational materials from the findings. The researcher found that important components of such as 'context for learning', 'internalization-mmersion', 'new challenge', and 'self-assessment' in STEAM education were not reflected properly in 19 mathematics-centered STEAM instructional programs. Therefore, the researcher put more emphasis on those components in the process of developing mathematics-centered STEAM program.
Clarifying differences of scholastic characteristics showed in male and female students is the first step for resolving the differences. It is difficult that we figure out them by one test. If we evaluate a few subjects, they can't have generality. So, we must evaluate lots of subjects through several years by all-around contents. We keep going on like that, we can get objective and valid results. Accordingly, I dealt with 2010~2014 NAEA taken by complete enumeration evaluation for elementary, middle, and high school students. From the evaluation, while I organized the achievement scores and the average of percentage of correct answers from aspects of whole test, item types, and content domains, I elicited from differences of scholastic characteristics showed in male and female students by achievement levels. On the basis of these, I explored ways which can resolve the differences in male and female students and I proposed several suggestions to look for the better ways.
The purpose of this study is to develop students' creativity and artistic sensitivity by developing a convergence education program that links various subjects, including mathematics, science, and art based on design. Design is done in almost every human activity that pursues beauty and implements cultural value through patterns and images. We have developed three programs for elementary school students and two programs for middle school students, taking into consideration the achievement standards and curriculum content appropriate for the 2015 revised curriculum. It was assessed by a panel of five educational experts during the development and demonstration courses to evaluate the feasibility of the development program. The development program can enhance the design literacy and design sense of elementary and junior high school students and can be used convergent educational contents that can be applied in the free-semester system activities of junior high school. Through this program, adolescents who will lead the future design society will be able to acquire the sense of design, literacy, and design ability as design consumers and producers.
The purpose of this study was to analyze STEAM learning/teaching program that relates robots and to develop and redesign STEAM teaching/learning program with a robot for elementary and secondary schools. 'Learning with a robot' is considered as one of the best candidates for STEAM education. This article mainly concerns a robot that can be helpful to improve students' interests in learning science and mathematics in schools. As the results of the STEAM learning/teaching program analyzing, the program for elementary schools contained more contents of liberal arts and fine arts, and the program for secondary schools contained more contents of science, technology, and math. In the middle school program, context for learning, class activities of creative design and emotional touch, evaluation, and job and career information were evenly implemented. In the elementary and high school program, there were few information about robotics career. We extracted all robot utilizable subjects and units from school curriculums, and redesigned contents which can be applicable to regular classes for schools. As the result of this study, we conclude that 'learning with a robot' can encourage students' interests in STEM area.
The applications of ratio and similarity have been in need of everyday life from ancient times. Euclid's elements Ⅴand Ⅵ cover ratio and similarity respectively. In this note, we have done a comparative analysis to button down the contents of ratio and similarity covered by the math text books used in Korea, Euclid's elements and the math text books used in Japan and America. As results, we can observe some differences between them. When math text books used in Korea introduce ratio, they presented it by showing examples unlike math text books used in America and Japan which present ratio by explaining the definition of it. In addition, in the text books used in Korea and Japan, the order of dealing with condition of similarity of triangles and the triangle proportionality is different from that of the text books used in America. Also, condition of similarity of triangles is used intuitively as postulate without any definition in text books used in Korea and Japan which is different from America's. The manner of teaching depending on the way of introducing learning contents and the order of presenting them can have great influence on student's understanding and application of the learning contents. For more desirable teaching in math it is better to provide text books dealing with various learning contents which consider student's diverse abilities rather than using current text books offering learning contents which are applied uniformly.
This study aims to examine pre- and in-service mathematics teachers' reasoning and how they justify their reasoning. For this purpose, we developed a set of mathematical tasks that are based on mathematical contents for middle grade students and conducted the survey to pre- and in-service teachers in Korea. Twenty-five pre-service teachers and 8 in-service teachers participated in the survey. The findings from the data analysis suggested as follows: a) the pre- and in-service mathematics teachers seemed to be very dependent of the manipulation of algebraic expressions so that they attempt to justify only by means of procedures such as known algorithms, rules, facts, etc., rather than trying to find out a mathematical structure in the first instance, b) the proof that teachers produced did not satisfy the generality when they attempted to justify using by other ways than the algebraic manipulation, c) the teachers appeared to rely on using formulas for finding patters and justifying their reasoning, d) a considerable number of the teachers seemed to stay at level 2 in terms of the proof production level, and e) more than 3/4 of the participating teachers appeared to have difficulty in mathematical reasoning and proof production particularly when faced completely new mathematical tasks.
The aim of statistics education is to enhance statistical thinking. Variability is the key components of statistical thinking. The research has been reviewed preceding research about variability of data. Proceeding from what has been considered above, this research developed learning materials that investigated the concept of variability as it relates to Freudenthal's context by having students sort a particular context. The research is executed the case study evidently aimed at Junior High School 3rd Grade Student's Understanding of Variability. The study of variability in data can be an important start to reach a testing of statistical hypothesis; students reduce data and draw graphs by relating probability distribution to relative frequency and normal distribution. Thus, this study offers basic materials into developing both contents and methods of education need to consider with this sense of purpose held by students to achieve this goal.
