The 2009 revised national mathematics curriculum have inserted mathematical 'linking cube' activities in the 6th grade math classes to improve students' spatial problem solving abilities and communication skills. However, we found that it was hard for teachers to teach problem solving and communication skills due to the absence of mathematical way of representing linking cubes in the classroom. In this paper, we propose 3D 'turtle representation system' as teaching and learning tools for linking cube activities. After using turtle representation system for linking cube activities, teachers responded that turtle representation system is a valuable problem solving and communication tools for the linking cube mathematics classes. We conclude that turtle representation system is a well designed teaching and learning tools for linking cube activities, and there are lots of educational meanings in the 3D turtle representation system.

The concept of zero(0) and calculations involving 0 are a few of the most difficult topics that students experience in learning mathematics. Therefore, it implies that proper guidance to help students understand the desirable concept of 0 and acquire calculating process involving 0 should be provided when we teach numbers and operations. This study aims to investigate instructional situations in relation to the errors of 0 and to search for efficient ways to teach them based on the previous research. To do this, we analysed elementary mathematics textbooks and workbooks. The result showed that $0{\div}$(a number) and the division of which quotient includes 0 as a middle digit lacked in current textbooks and workbooks. We devised the learning activities of the two topics for 3rd grades and 4th grades, respectively. We expect that the activities will be helpful to devise learning activities of textbook and suggest some implications for teaching the calculations involving 0.
In this paper, inquiry-oriented mathematics instruction was suggested as a teaching method to foster mathematical creativity. And it is argued that inquiry learning assist students to explore the mathematical problem actively and thus participate in mathematical activities like mathematicians. Through inquiry activities, the students learn mathematical ideas and develop new and creative mathematical ideas. Although creativity is often viewed as being associated with exceptional ability, for mathematics teacher who want to develop students' mathematical creativity, it is productive to view mathematical creativity as a mathematical ability that can be fostered in general school education. And also, both teacher and student have to think that they can develop mathematical ideas by themselves. That is very important to foster mathematical creativity in the mathematics class.

This research aimed to explore the effects of collaborative writing activities in a mathematical context, specifically pertaining to areas such as numbers and operation, geometrical figure, and measurement in Mathematics: Level 5-b, on their mathematical achievement gain and disposition among Grade 5 students. To do this, out of a total of 62 students selected from two Grade 5 classes of J Elementary School in Dalseo-gu, Daegu City, who were found to be homogenic from the tests of math performance and dispositions, an experimental group(n=31) was designed and compared to a control group (n=31). Over a six week period from October to November in 2009, the experimental group was given collaborative writing lessons in math classes while the control group was given teacher-oriented regular lessons. The results were as follows. First, there was more or less considerable, though not significant, difference in overall mathematical achievement in the students experiencing collaborative writing activities when compared with the students in the control group. However, in terms of numbers and operation, a sub-category of mathematics, there was significant difference between the two groups. Second, the students experiencing collaborative writing activities were more positively affected in all sub-categories of mathematical disposition: confidence, flexibility, determination, curiosity, reflection, and value, than those in the control group. In summing up, the exposure of collaborative writing activities to mathematics learning was found to help students not only to have a concrete and proper grasp of the relevant problem solving process, which was observed from their mathematical achievement gain especially in the sphere of numbers and operation, but also to have their mathematical disposition set towards more positive direction, which was seen in all sub-categories of mathematical disposition measurement.
The purpose of this paper is to perceive the problems of current geometry education in the middle school mathematics, to develop some learning materials fitted for the mathematising activities based on Freudenthal's learning theories and to analyze the mathematising process followed by teaching-learning activities. For this purpose, we design activity-oriented learning materials for geometry based on Freudenthal's learning theories, and appropriate teaching-learning models are established for the middle school geometry at the 8-NA stage level according to the theory of van Hiele's geometry learning steps. After applied to the practical lessons, the effects of mathematical activities are analyzed.
This study set out to analyze the learning types that most students were engaged in after school, to review the efficiency of private education through academic institutions or tutoring, and to examine the directions in the after-school learning in math under the current system. It also aimed to analyze the impacts of those after-school learning activities on school classes and to suggest some plans to help public education get back on the track. In the study the after-school learning activities in the math subject were categorized into taking classes at academic institutions, tutoring, and autonomous learning. The grades of the subject students were compared and analyzed for three semesters to find the directions right for the school classes.
Goos(2004) introduced educational researchers' demand for change on the way that mathematics is taught in schools and the series of curriculum documents produced by the National council of Teachers of Mathematics. The documents have placed emphasis on the processes of problem solving, reasoning, and communication. In Korea, the national curriculum documents have also placed increased emphasis on mathematical activities such as reasoning and communication(1997, 2007).The purpose of this study is to analyze the impact of inquiry-oriented instruction with guided reinvention on students' mathematical activities containing communication and reasoning for science high school students. In this paper, we introduce an inquiry-oriented instruction containing Polya's plausible reasoning, Freudenthal's guided reinvention, Forman's sociocultural approach of learning, and Vygotsky's zone of proximal development. We analyze the impact of mathematical findings from inquiry-oriented instruction on students' mathematical activities containing communication and reasoning.
Even and odd numbers are taught in elementary school mathematics, but the introductory activities, definitions, and properties of sum on even and odd numbers vary depending on which grade they are presented. The purpose of this study was to compare and analyze the activities related to even and odd numbers presented in Korean mathematics textbooks developed under the different curriculum revisions, and to further analyze the related activities in foreign textbooks to draw implications for the teaching of even and odd numbers. In Korean textbooks, from the time of the fourth mathematics curriculum until the 2007 revision, even and odd numbers were covered in the multiples and divisors unit of the fifth grade textbook, while since the 2009 revision, the first grade textbook has covered the topic along with teaching numbers up to 50 or 100. In addition, the definitions of even and odd numbers varied depending on the grade level and the nature of the unit being taught, and activities addressing the properties of sum were only presented in the mathematics textbook under the third curriculum along with a few mathematics workbooks. In foreign textbooks, even and odd numbers were introduced in Grades 1, 2, or 5, and their related activities varied accordingly. Based on these findings, this study discusses the implications for the teaching of even and odd numbers.
Character education is an important educational purpose in the current situation of secondary mathematics education. In the current mathematics curriculum, character education is mentioned in terms of core competencies. However, it is very difficult to concretely practice character education in secondary mathematics education. This paper examines the theoretical background of character education in the tradition of mathematics education, and suggests that mathematics is regarded as a practical tradition by the nature of mathematics from a value-intrinsic perspective. In this respect, mathematics education is defined as an intrinsic and nurturing character through long history of practice. This paper searched for an integrated approach to practicing character education in of secondary mathematics education, and argued that the teacher's personal approach including the class model approach of the human factors by an example of the exponential law aman = am+n and the value-oriented activities according to the nature of the mathematics was the core.

This study assumes alternative character of the operation of gifted class in middle school. The case that operated the voluntary mathematics club for one year was analyzed and the educational effect was considered. First, the examination instrument for choosing the members of mathematics club was developed and used. Second, diverse teaching and learning materials for improving creativity and mathematical ability of the members were used. Third, the difference of learning result between the experiment group and control one who joined the activities of mathematics club was analyzed.
