Analysis of geometric proof texts in school mathematics (학교수학에서 기하 증명 텍스트의 분석 - 기능문법과 수사학을 중심으로 -)

  • Practice of proof is considered in, the view of language and meta-mathematics, recognizing the role of proof that is the means of communication and development of mathematical understanding. Linguistic components in proof texts are symbol, verbal language and visual text, and contain the implicit knowledge in the meta-mathematics view. This study investigates the functions of linguistic elements according to Halliday's functional grammar and the rhetoric skills in proof texts in math textbook, teacher's note, and student's written text. We need to inquire into the aspects of language for mathematics learning process and the understanding and use of students' language.

  • In this paper, a mathematical model for HIV infection with saturating infection rate and time delay is established. By some analytical skills, we study the global asymptotical stability of the viral free equilibrium of the model, and obtain the sufficient conditions for the local asymptotical stability of the other two infection equilibria. Finally, some related numerical simulations are also presented to verify our results.

  • Problem sovling skill is one of the core skills in mathematics education. To improve students' problem solving skill, the project approach or project based learning has been developed and applied. A teaching and learning strategy utilizing 'project' encourages students to understand the problem embedded in the project, find and reflect the solution, which might be effective in improving students' problem solving skill. The present study systematically reviews literature regarding project based learning and analyzes the characteristics of project. The findings from the systematic review illuminate an appropriate approach to apply project based learning in mathematics classrooms.

Analysis of generative AI's mathematical problem-solving performance: Focusing on ChatGPT 4, Claude 3 Opus, and Gemini Advanced (생성형 인공지능의 수학 문제 풀이에 대한 성능 분석: ChatGPT 4, Claude 3 Opus, Gemini Advanced를 중심으로)

  • As digital·AI-based teaching and learning is emphasized, discussions on the educational use of generative AI are becoming more active. This study analyzed the mathematical performance of ChatGPT 4, Claude 3 Opus, and Gemini Advanced on solving examples and problems from five first-year high school math textbooks. As a result of examining the overall correct answer rate and characteristics of each skill for a total of 1,317 questions, ChatGPT 4 had the highest overall correct answer rate of 0.85, followed by Claude 3 Opus at 0.67, and Gemini Advanced at 0.42. By skills, all three models showed high correct answer rates in 'Find functions' and 'Prove', while relatively low correct answer rates in 'Explain' and 'Draw graphs'. In particular, in 'Count', ChatGPT 4 and Claude 3 Opus had a correct answer rate of 1.00, while Gemini Advanced was low at 0.56. Additionally, all models had difficulty in explaining using Venn diagrams and creating images. Based on the research results, teachers should identify the strengths and limitations of each AI model and use them appropriately in class. This study is significant in that it suggested the possibility of use in actual classes by analyzing the mathematical performance of generative AI. It also provided important implications for redefining the role of teachers in mathematics education in the era of artificial intelligence. Further research is needed to develop a cooperative educational model between generative AI and teachers and to study individualized learning plans using AI.

The Influence of the Functional Thinking Based-Teaching on Algebraic Reasoning and Functional Thinking Level of Sixth Grade Elementary School Students (함수적 사고 기반 수업이 초등학교 6학년 학생들의 대수적 추론 능력 및 함수적 사고 수준에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of teaching on functional thinking, one of the algebraic thinking in sixth grade students level. For this study, we developed functional thinking based-teaching through analyzing mathematical curriculum and preceding research, which consisted of 12 classes, and we investigated the effects of teaching through quantitative and qualitative analysis. In the results of this study, functional thinking based-teaching was statistically proven to be more effective in improving algebraic reasoning skills and lower elements which is an algebraic reasoning as generalized arithmetic and functional thinking, compared to traditional textbook-centered lessons. In addition, the functional thinking based-teaching gave a positive impact on the functional thinking level. Thus functional thinking based-teaching provides guidance on the implications for teaching and learning methods and study of the functional thinking in the future, because of the significant impact on the mathematics learning in six grade students.

The Effects of Programming Learning on the Improvement of Problem Solving Ability Using MCU (MCU를 활용한 프로그래밍 학습이 문제해결력 향상에 미치는 효과)

  • Computer programming education gives students a chance to use computers independently and actively. This plays a very positive role in acquiring higher cognitive skills such as mathematical skills and creative logical thinking. Thus the purpose of this study is to measure the degrees of students' problem-solving abilities using MCU programming kits based on the ICT Education Guide. The experiment confirms that programming classes using MCU kits have a more positive effect on the students problem-solving abilities than do those using the existing computer textbooks. The sub-constituents of problem-solving abilities - problem recognition, information gathering, analysis, diffuse thinking, decision-making, planning, execution, evaluation and feedback - also show significant statistical differences. Therefore, we can conclude that programming classes using MCU kits are very effective in advancing problem-solving abilities.

Case Studies for Consulting of Elementary Mathematics teaching based on Flanders's Interaction Analysis Category System (Flanders 언어상호작용 분석법에 기초한 초등수학과 수업 컨설팅 실천 사례 연구)

  • This study is designed to help pre-service teachers to improve their teaching skills in elementary math class. For this, the consulting program with 5-steps was planned and applied to three elementary pre-service teachers. Each class the teachers performed was analyzed by both Flanders's Interaction Analysis Category System and participant observation. As results of consulting, the common characteristics of three pre-service teachers are shown. Firstly their teaching style is non directive, but they fail to induce their students spontaneously respond. They often ignore or don't use their students' respond they think incorrect to develop the next ideas. Simply saying, their classes are typically teacher-oriented but they are not authoritative. It is proved that consulting program is effective for improving developing non directive teaching skills, but is not much effective decreasing teachers' comment and increasing students' rolls in a math class.

A Study of mathematically gifted elementary students' creativity on dimension based geometry exploring program (차원을 주제로 한 기하탐구프로그램을 통한 초등수학영재학생들의 창의성)

  • The purpose of this study is to identify how developed program influence students' creativity by analyzing creative thinking and creative attitude which is appeared when mathematically gifted students get the program expected to improve their creativity. For the study, the 'dimension based geometry exploring program' was developed that consist of twelve lessons. The main idea of it, is implication of the novel . Through a pre and post-test, students's creativity were measured and compared. The results show significant changes on the scores of creative thinking skills and creative attitudes. As the result, mathematically gifted students' creative thinking skills and creative attitudes were improved by applying the of dimension based geometry exploring program.

A Study on the Instructional Model utilizing Scratch for Introductory Programming Classes of SW-Major Students (SW전공자 프로그래밍 입문 수업의 스크래치 활용 수업 모형 연구)

  • The programming language is a core education area of software that is becoming increasingly important in the age of the fourth industrial revolution, but it requires mathematical knowledge and logical thinking skills, so that many local private university and college students with low basic skills are having difficulties learning it. This problem occasionally causes SW-major students to lose interest and confidence in their majors during the introductory course of programming languages; making them change their majors, or give up their studies. In this study, we designed an instructional model using Scratch for educating C-language which is a typical programming introductory language. To do this, we analyzed the concepts that can be trained by Scratch among the programming concepts supported by C-language, and developed the examples of Scratch for exercising the concepts. In addition, we designed an instructional model, by which the programming concepts are first learned through Scratch and then C-language is taught, and conducted an experiment on the SW-major freshman students of a local private university to verify the effectiveness of the model. In the situation where SW education is becoming common, we expect that this study will help programming language education of security IT students.

  • Linking Ukraine's education system with the trends of global digitalization is mandatory to ensure the sustainable, long-term development of the country, as well as to increase the sustainability of the education system and the economy as a whole during the crisis period. Now the main problems of the education system in Ukraine are manifested in a complex context caused by Russian armed aggression. In the context of war, problems include differences in adaptation to online learning among educational institutions, limited access to education for vulnerable groups in the zone of active hostilities, the lack of digital educational resources suitable for online learning, and the lack of basic digital skills and competencies among students and teachers necessary to properly conduct online classes. Some of the problems of online learning were solved in the pandemic, but in the context of war Ukrainian society needs a new vision of education and continuous efforts of all social structures in the public and private environment. In the context of war, concerted action is needed to keep education on track and restore it in active zones, adapting to the needs of a dynamic society and an increasingly digitized economy. Among the urgent needs of the education system are a change in the teaching-learning paradigm, which is based on content presentation, memorization, and reproduction, and the adoption of a new, hybrid educational model that will encourage the development of necessary skills and abilities for students and learners in a digitized society and enable citizens close to war zones to learn.
