  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of interpersonal relation and job stress on nursing performance among male nurses. Methods: This study was cross-sectional descriptive one. The data were collected from self-administered questionnaires by 110 male nurses members affiliated with the Korean Man Nurses Association. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, one way ANOVA with Duncan test, Pearson correlation, and stepwise multiple regression with the SPSS/WIN 21.0. Results: The average scores of interpersonal relation, job stress, and nursing performance were respectively 3.64, 3.10, 3.63. Nursing performance was high in married, good health condition, manager, and high salary among male nurses. Nursing performance showed significant positive correlation with interpersonal relation (p<.001), and a significant negative correlation with job stress (p=.010). Influencing factors of nursing performance among male nurses were interpersonal relation, health status, total duration of career, position, and the adjusted $R^2$ of the regression model was 42%. Conclusion: The results suggest that we need to develop a training program to improve the nursing performance of the male nurses.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine job recognition of female nurses and perceived image of male nurses, and to investigate predictive factors affecting this perceived image. Methods: A survey was conducted between September and October 2015 with 143 female clinical nurses who worked at hospitals. Data were analyzed using the SPSS 21.0 correlation and multiple regression analyses. Results: The findings of this study were as follows : Female nurses recognition had positive correlations with images of male nurses. Social image(r=.41, p<.001), professional image(r=.45, p<.001), and nursing job prospects(r=.49, p<.001) were significantly correlated with perceived image of male nurses. Nursing job prospect(${\beta}=.193$, p=.049), perception that male nurses were suitable for their jobs(${\beta}=.329$, p<.001), mass media experience related to male nurses(${\beta}=.244$, p<.001), social image(${\beta}=.225$, p=.009) and professional image(${\beta}=.191$, p=.021) explained 42.7% of the variance in image of male nurses. Conclusions: The findings of this study suggest that nursing education and research should find concrete ways to improve perceived image of male nurses. It will enhance the quality of nursing service by improving male nurses' communication and collaboration with female nurses.

  • Purpose: This study compares differences between male and female nursing students in terms of the level of stress experienced during clinical practice settings, stress coping mechanisms and clinical competency. Method: The study population was nursing students who had taken a clinical practice course at one of five general hospitals in city D. Data were collected from September 15 to October 15, 2013 through a structured self-administered questionnaire survey given to 319 subjects (156 male students, 163 female students) enrolled in a statistical analysis course. Results: Male nursing students experienced lower stress levels during clinical practice and higher clinical competency than female students. In terms of stress coping mechanisms, male students were significantly more active than female students in deploying coping strategies. Among all students, students with higher clinical practice stress and concomitant stress coping scores exhibited higher clinical competency. Conclusion: Noticeable differences between male and female nursing students in terms of stress levels arising in the course of clinical practice, stress coping strategies, and clinical competency were revealed. However, further identification of specific stressful situations for male and female nursing students and subsequent management of clinical training circumstances are required.

  • Purpose: This study was to explore the meaning of masculinity in nursing by investigating how the male qualities are expressed in the culture of nursing wherein men represent a minority group. Methods: Connell's hegemonic masculinity theory (1987, 1995) and qualitative thematic analysis were used to conduct this study in which eight male nurses participated. Braun and Clarke's six stages of thematic analysis (2006) were used for data analysis. Results: The results indicated that masculinity in nursing meant 'soft masculinity' meeting the expectations of the discipline while keeping the male qualities intact. Male nurses were found to suppress their masculinity at earlier stages of their career and to make themselves more accommodating to the profession. However, males re-asserted their masculinity once they became more comfortable with their nursing work. Conclusion: In the field of nursing, masculinity was found to be subjected to stages of attenuating and consolidating which take place in succession. Consolidation of the male qualities was motivated rather unexpectedly by female colleagues. The results confirmed that the issue of gender in nursing is an important factor in recruiting and understanding male nurses in the future.

  • Purpose: Number of the old-old elderly is rapidly increasing in Korea, but it is unclear whether there are differences between old-old and young-old elderly in nutritional status, nutrient intakes and health status. The gender differences in Korean elderly in these conditions also remains unknown. This study, therefore, investigated gender-associated differences in nutritional, health status and nutrient intakes and how they are related among young-old and old-old homebound elderly. Methods: Two hundred and eighty elderly who were attending a local elderly welfare center were recruited. Evaluation included demographic, nutritional and health status related data, nutritional intakes, and life style related factors including physical activity. Results: Of the 280 subjects, old-old were 147 (52.5%) and young-old were 133 (47.5%). Male old-old elderly had more often abdominal obesity than female old-old, but male old-old more often had malnutrition than female old-old. There were few differences in nutrient intakes between old-old male elderly and female elderly after energy intakes were controlled. Male old-old more often had less intake of beta carotene and Vitamin A than female old-old. On the other hand, male old-old elderly more often had hypercholesterolemia and hypertension than male young-old. Conclusion: Male old-old may be at a greater health and nutritional risk than female old-old. Targeted nutritional intervention for male old-old emphasizing antioxidant nutritional intakes may be warranted.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of the gender role conflict on nursing professionalism in male nursing college students. Method: The subjects were 113 male college students in D and J city. The data were collected from April 24 to May 3, in 2017 using a structured questionnaire. The data were analyzed using the SPSS WIN 24.0 program. For data analysis, independent t-test, One-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient and multiple linear regression analysis were carried out. Results: The results are follows. First, the individual characteristics in gender role conflict were significantly different in motivation(F=2.62, p=0.028) and the entering college decision(F=3.14, p=0.028), and nursing professionalism were significantly different in the entering college decision(F=4.34, p=0.006). Second, a negative relationship was observed between the gender role conflict and nursing professionalism(r=-.287, p=<0.01). The success, power and competition(${\beta}=0.19$, p<0.05) and male superiority(${\beta}=-0.47$, p<0.001) were found to influence nursing professionalism. Conclusion: These results highlight the need to develop educational intervention to lower the superiority of the male and to encourager success, power and competition of male nursing college students.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to integrate and synthesize findings from qualitative studies exploring male students' experiences of adapting to nursing education programs so as to obtain further understanding of the phenomenon. Methods: The meta-synthesis process was primarily guided by Noblit and Hare's approach, which consists of four stages including searching, appraisal of an individual study's quality, data extraction for analysis, and meta-synthesizing the results. Results: Findings from the literature reviewed were synthesized into six themes: 1) extraordinary choice based on job stability and gender scarcity; 2) unexpected feeling of marginalization as minority far apart from the mainstream; 3) assimilation and negotiation for relational adaptation through perspective shift; 4) fortifying the vision and identity as nursing students by meaning making for adapting to the nursing major; 5) mutual support among colleague male students; and 6) serving in the military as way of hiding out and achieving maturation. Conclusion: The findings illustrate that nursing education programs need practical changes promoting male students' adaptation to the program itself as well as preparation to be a professional nurse in the future.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to understand and describe the meaning of the experience of male nurses working in Intensive Care Units (ICU). Methods: Data were collected through in-depth interviews with 8 male nurses. Data were collected from november 2019 to february 2020 and were analyzed using Colaizzi's method, a phenomenological approach. Results: 8 theme clusters, and 28 themes were identified. The 8 clusters were as follows; the feeling of burden in a busy and sensitive situation, the daily life facing life and death, female colleagues and patients who are still difficult to treat, a reliable and grateful male colleague, being proud of this role that a man can do, various experiences that improve me, constant effort to be recognized as a team member, and wavering and weighing in the career. Conclusion: These results could help to expand understanding the role of male nurses working in the ICU and in other areas. In addition, the results provide basic data needed to improve mutual respect and relationships between male and female nurses. It is necessary to offer mentoring programs for male nurses to adapt to nursing field.

  • The aim of this study was to identify the significant predictors of subjective happiness for male nursing students. Collecting data from 171 male nursing students, we carried out t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe test, Pearson correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression on SPSS Win 20.0. The significant predictors of subjective happiness for male nursing students were self-esteem, gratitude disposition, perceived relationship of peer, and flow. These factors explained 56.1% of subjective happiness. The results suggest that an effective approach to happiness promotion program for male nursing students should consider self-esteem, gratitude disposition, perceived relationship of peer, and flow.
