  • $La_{1-x}Ba_xMnO_3$ (x = 0.30, 0.35 and 0.40) samples have been prepared by solid-state reaction method. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) study showed that all the samples crystallized in a rhombohedral structure with an R-3c space group. Variation of the magnetization as a function of the temperature and applied magnetic field was carried out. All the samples revealed ferromagnetic to paramagnetic (FM-PM) phase transition at the Curie temperature $T_C{\sim}342K$. The magnetic entropy change was also studied through examination of the measured magnetic isotherms M(H, T) near $T_C$. The magnetocaloric effect was calculated in terms of the isothermal magnetic entropy change. The maximum entropy change reaches a value of 1.192 J/kgK under a magnetic field change of 2.5T for the $La_{0.6}Ba_{0.4}MnO_3$ composition. The relative cooling power (RCP) is 79.31 J/kg for the same applied magnetic field.

  • The line-width of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) was studied as a function of the temperature at a frequency of 9.49 GHz in the presence of external electromagnetic radiation. The relative frequency dependence of the absorption power is obtained with the projection operator technique (POT) proposed by Kawabata. The line-width increased as the temperature increased in the high-temperature region (T>200 K). The scattering is little affected in the low-temperature region (T<200 K) because there is no correlation between the resonance field and the Fermi-Dirac distribution function. Thus, the present technique is considered to be more convenient to explain the resonant system as in the case of other optical transition problems.

  • We have used acetic acids ethanol and distilled water as a solvent to synthesize $La_{2/3}Sr_{1/3}Mn_{0.99}{^{57}}Fe_{0.01}O_3$(LSMFO) precursor. Crack-free LSMFO granular polycrystalline thin films have been deposited on thermally oxidized silicon substrates by spin coaling. The dependence of crystallization, surface morphology, magnetic and transport properties on annealing temperature was investigated. With increasing annealing temperature, the metal-semiconductor (insulator) transition temperature and the magnetic moment decrease while the resistivity increases. The lattice constants remain almost unchanged. For LSMFO thin films, spin-dependent interfacial tunneling and/or scattering magnetoresistance were observed. Our results indicate that the annealing temperature is very important in determining the intrinsic and extrinsic magnetotransport properties.

  • This paper shows a new effective approach to measure crystallization temperature of soft magnetic underlayer (SUL) for next generation of heat assisted perpendicular recording media. This approach uses temperature dependent reflectivity, which shows a clear jump when samples are crystallized. To achieve this measurement, an optical system is set up using hot plate and infrared laser. Reflectivity of SUL $(Co_{70}Fe_{30})_{92}Ta_3Zr_5$ shows a clear jump at its amorphous-crystalline transition temperature. Experiment results show this effect is clear in infrared region, and is weak for visible light.

  • We study the electron spin resonance line-width (ESRLW) of $Fe^{3+}$ in crystalline $LiNbO_3$ ; the ESRLW is obtained using the projection operator method (POM) developed by Argyres and Sigel. The ESRLW is calculated to be axially symmetric about the c-axis and is analyzed by the spin Hamiltonian with an isotopic g factor at a frequency of 9.5 GHz. The ESRLW increases exponentially as the temperature increases, and the ESRLW is almost constant in the high-temperature region (T>8000 K). This kind of temperature dependence of the ESRLW indicates a motional narrowing of the spectrum when $Fe^{3+}$ ions substitute the $Nb^{5+}$ ions in an off-center position. It is clear from this feature that there are two different regions in the graph of the temperature dependence of the ESRLW.

  • This paper studies the effects of A-site substitution by barium on the magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of $Pr_{0.5}Sr_{0.5-x}Ba_{x}MnO_{3}$ (x = 0, 0.04, 0.08 and 0.1). The tetragonal crystal structures of the samples are confirmed by room temperature X-ray diffraction. The dependence of the Curie temperature ($T_C$) and the magnetic entropy change (${\Delta}S_M$) on the Ba doping content has been investigated. The samples of all doping contents undergo the second order phase transition. As the concentration of Ba increased, the maximum entropy change ($|{\Delta}S_M|_{max}$) increased gradually, from 1.15 J $kg^{-1}$ $K^{-1}$ (x = 0) to 1.36 J $kg^{-1}$ $K^{-1}$ (x = 0.1), in a magnetic field change of 1.5 T. The measured value of $T_C$ is 265 K, 275 K, 260 K and 250 K for x = 0, 0.04, 0.08 and 0.1, respectively. If combining these samples for magnetic refrigeration, the temperature range of ~220 K and 290 K, where |${\Delta}S_M$|max is stable at ~1.27 J $kg^{-1}$ $K^{-1}$ and RCP = 88.9 $J{\cdot}kg^{-1}$ for ${\Delta}H$ = 1.5 T. $Pr_{0.5}Sr_{0.5-x}Ba_{x}MnO_{3}$ compounds, are expected to be suitable for magnetic-refrigeration application due to these magnetic properties.

  • We investigated theoretically the quantum optical transition properties of Si, in quasi 2-Dimensinal Landau splitting system, based on quantum transport theory. We apply the quantum transport theory (QTR) to the system in the confinement of electrons by square well confinement potential under linearly polarized oscillating field. We use the projected Liouville equation method with Equilibrium Average Projection Scheme (EAPS). In order to analyze the quantum transition, we compare the temperature and the magnetic field dependencies of the QTLW and the QTLS on four transition processes, namely, the intra-leval transition process, the inter-leval transition process, the phonon emission transition process and the phonon absorption transition process.

  • The NMR spectra of $Li_3Rb(SO_4)_2$ crystals and their relaxation processes were investigated by using $^7Li$ and $^{87}Rb$ NMR. The relaxation rates of the $^7Li$ and $^{87}Rb$ nuclei in the crystals were found to increase with increasing temperature, and can be described by the relation $T_1^{-1}{\propto}AT^2$. The dominant relaxation mechanism for these nuclei with electric quadrupole moments is provided by the coupling of these moments to the thermal fluctuations of the local electric field gradient via Raman spin-phonon processes.

  • We investigated the effects of impurity doping on the electrical transport and magnetic properties of TEX>$(Ru, Sn)(Sr, La)<_2$$EuCeCu_2$$O_{z}$ samples. We found that Sn substitution fur Ru causes a significant decrease of the volume fraction of ferromagnetic phase, as well as a decrease of the temperature where the ferromagnetic component is observed. La substitution for Sr leads to an increase of the magnetic ordering temperature with a moderate change of ferromagnetic component. The experimental results are discussed in conjunction with the structural data, transport properties and a possible change of oxygen content.

  • A very simple a.c. magnetic susceptometer for use in a helium closed cycle cryostat is reported in this paper. This simple setup has only a single bobbin-less copper coil, instead of the primary coil and two secondary coils typically used in mutual-inductance types. The single bobbin-less copper coil is directly mounted on the cryostat cold head. A sample is attached on the inside wall of the copper coil using a thermal contact material and its a.c. magnetic susceptibility is obtained from the measurement of the self-inductance of the sample coil using an LCR meter or an impedance analyzer. Experimental details are described and illustrative measurements on magnetic and superconducting materials as a function of temperature are included. The performances and limitations of this simple a.c. magnetic suceptometer are also discussed.
