  • The purpose of this study, is to separate magnetic separation devices using permanent magnets by using magnetization characteristics remaining in treated water after adsorption and synthesizing phosphorus adsorbent capable of magnetic separation for efficient removal of phosphorus. The synthesis of the adsorbent which set Zirconium(Zr) having high friendly features for phosphorus as an element, and by synthesizing Iron Oxide($Fe_3O_4$, another name of $Fe_3O_4$ is magnetite) being able to grant magnetism to Zirconium Sulfate($Zr(SO_4)_2$), zirconium magnetic adsorbent(ZM) were manufactured. In order to consider the phosphorus adsorption characteristics of adsorbent ZM, batch adsorption experiment was performed, and based on the results, pH effect, adsorption isotherm, adsorption kinetics, and magnetic separation have been explore. As the experiment result, adsorbent ZM showed a tendency that the adsorption number was decreased rapidly at pH 13; however, it was showed a high amount of phosphorus removal in other range and it showed the highest amount of phosphorus removal in pH 6 of neutral range. In addtion, the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model is matched well, and D-R adsorption isotherm model is ranged 14.43kJ/mol indicating ion exchange mechanism. The result shown adsorption kinetics match well to the Pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The adsorbent ZM's capablility of regenerating NaOH and $H_2SO_4$, was high selectivity on the phosphorus without impacts on the other anions. The results of applying the treated water after adsorption of phosphorus to the magnetic separation device by using permanent magnets, shows that capture of the adsorbent by the magnetization filter was perfect. And they show the possibility of utilization on the phosphorus removal in water.

  • The cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB)-modified montmorillonite (MMT) was synthesized via a novel "dissolution and reassembly" method. To determine the optimal formula, the adsorption of C.I. Reactive Red 2 (X3B) with CTAB/MMT was investigated. The optimal CTAB/MMT nanocomposite was used to remove 2,6-dichlorophenol and p-nitrophenol from aqueous solutions. The adsorption results can be described by Langmuir isotherm, and the adsorption capacities were 200 mg/g and 125 mg/g for 2,6-dichlorophenol and p-nitrophenol, respectively. To realize the quick separation and recycle, the magnetic CTAB/MMT was further strategized and synthesized. The adsorption equilibrium time was 15 min for both contaminants; the ions' strength showed a little bit of influence on the adsorption performance. In addition, compared with acidic condition, neutral condition was more beneficial to the adsorption reaction. Due to the addition of $Fe_3O_4$, the adsorption capacities of this magnetic nanocomposite for 2,6-dichlorophenol and p-nitrophenol were a little bit decreased, which were 170 mg/g and 91 mg/g, respectively. However, the magnetic nanocomposite can be separated within 30 s under an external magnetic field, which would be useful in the practical application.

  • The removal property of magnetic zeolite for the adsorption of aqueous ammonium ion was examined in this work. The surface modified magnetic zeolite was produced by hydrothermal synthesis. The complex of zeolite and $Fe_3O_4$ was established by the observation of SEM and XRD analysis and less than 12.6% of $Fe_3O_4$ content in magnetic zeolite was observed in the form of $Fe_3O_4$ particles. The optimum pH of adsorption was shown around 8 and the maximum adsorption linearly decreased with the increase of $Fe_3O_4$ content. The adsorption isotherm for aqueous ammonium ion was approximated by Langmuir equation. The developed surface modified magnetic zeolite adsorbent was recommended to control the nitrogen pollution for wetland environment system.

  • Magnetic activated carbon was prepared by adding a magnetic material to activated carbon that had been prepared from waste citrus peel in Jeju. The adsorption characteristics of an aqueous solution of the antibiotic trimethoprim (TMP) were investigated using the magnetic activated carbon, as an adsorbent, and response surface methodology (RSM). Batch experiments were carried out according to a four-factor Box-Behnken experimental design affecting TMP adsorption with their input parameters (TMP concentration: 50~150 mg/L; pH: 4~10; temperature: 293~323 K; adsorbent dose: 0.05~0.15 g). The significance of the independent variables and their interaction was assessed by ANOVA and t-test statistical techniques. Statistical results showed that TMP concentration was the most effective parameter, compared with others. The adsorption process can be well described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The experimental isotherm data followed the Langmuir isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacities of TMP, estimated with the Langmuir isotherm model were 115.9-130.5 mg/g at 293-323 K. Also, both the thermodynamic parameters, ΔH and ΔG, have both positive values, indicating that the adsorption of TMP by the magnetic activated carbon is an endothermic reaction and proceeds via an involuntary process.

  • The removal of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-dichlorophenol, 2,4-DCP) in aqueous solution was studied using the magnetic activated carbon (MAC) prepared from waste citrus peel. The adsorption characteristics of 2,4-DCP by MAC were investigated by varying the contact time, MAC dose, solution temperature, pH and 2,4-DCP concentration. The isothermal adsorption data were well explained by the Langmuir isotherm model equation and the maximum adsorption capacity calculated from the Langmuir isotherm equation was 312.5 mg/g. The adsorption kinetic data were well described by the pseudo-second-order reaction equation. The intraparticle diffusion model data indicated that both the film and intraparticle diffusion occur simultaneously during the adsorption process. The thermodynamic parameters of ${\Delta}H^o$ and ${\Delta}G^o$ have positive and negative values, respectively, indicating that the adsorption of 2,4-DCP by MAC is a spontaneous endothermic reaction. After the adsorption experiment was completed, the used MAC could be easily separated by an external magnet.

  • This study was carried out for characterization of MIO synthesized in our laboratory by co-precipitation method and applied isotherm and kinetic models for adsorption properties. XRD analysis were conducted to find crystal structure of synthesized MIO. Further SEM and XPS analysis was performed before and after phosphate adsorption, and BET analysis for surface characterization. Phosphate stock solution was prepared by KH2PO4 for characterization of phosphate adsorption, and batch experiment was conducted using 50 ml conical tube. Langmuir and Freundlich models were applied based on adsorption equilibrium test of MIO by initial phosphate solution. Pseudo first order and pseudo second order models were applied for interpretation of kinetic model by temperature. Surface area and pore size of MIO were found $89.6m^2/g$ and 16 nm respectively. And, the determination coefficient ($R^2$) value of Langmuir model was 0.9779, which was comparatively higher than that of Freundlich isotherm model 0.9340.

  • The problem of water contamination by long-living cesium and strontium radionuclides is an urgent environmental issue. The development of facile and efficient technologies based on nanostructured adsorbents is a perspective for selective radionuclides removal. In this regard, current work aimed to obtain the nanostructured magnetic zeolite composites with high adsorption performance to cesium and strontium ions. The optimal conditions of hydrothermal synthesis were established based on XRD, SEM-EDX, N2 adsorption-desorption, VSM, and batch adsorption experiment data. The role of chemical composition, textural characteristics, and surface morphology was demonstrated. The monolayer ionexchange mechanism was proposed based on adsorption isotherm modeling. The highest Langmuir adsorption capacity of 229.6 and 105.1 mg/g towards cesium and strontium ions was reached for composite obtained at 90 ℃ hydrothermal treatment. It was shown that magnetic characteristics of zeolite composites allowing to separate spent adsorbents by a magnet from aqueous solutions.

  • Magnetic multi-granule nanoclusters (MGNCs) were investigated as an inexpensive means to effectively remove arsenic from aqueous environment, particularly groundwater sources consumed by humans. Various size MGNCs were examined to determine both their capacity and efficiency for arsenic adsorption for different initial arsenic concentrations. The MGNCs showed highly efficient arsenic adsorption characteristics, thereby meeting the allowable safety limit of $10{\mu}g/L$ (ppb), prescribed by the World Health Organization (WHO), and confirming that 0.4 g and 0.6 g of MGNCs were sufficient to remove 0.5 mg/L and 1.0 mg/L of arsenate ($AsO_4{^{3-}}$) from water, respectively. Adsorption isotherm models for the MGNCs were used to estimate the adsorption parameters. They showed similar parameters for both the Langmuir and Sips models, confirming that the adsorption process in this work was active at a region of low arsenic concentration. The actual efficiency of arsenate removal was then tested against 1 L of artificial arsenic-contaminated groundwater with an arsenic concentration of 0.6 mg/L in the presence of competing ions. In this case, only 1.0 g of 100 nm MGNCs was sufficient to reduce the arsenic concentrations to below the WHO permissible safety limit for drinking water, without adjusting the pH or temperature, which is highly advantageous for practical field applications.

  • We demonstrated the efficacy of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) produced from a low grade iron ore as an adsorbent for the removal of Cr(VI), a toxic heavy metal anion present in wastewater. The adsorption of Cr(VI) by these MNPs strongly depended on the dosage of MNPs, the initial concentration of the Cr(VI) solutions, and pH. The highest Cr(VI) adsorption efficiency of 22.0 mg/g was observed at pH 2.5. The adsorption data were best fit with the Langmuir isotherm and corresponded to a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The used adsorbent was regenerated by eluting in highly alkaline solutions. Sodium bicarbonate showed the highest desorption efficiency of 83.1% among various eluents including NaOH, $Na_2HPO_4$, and $Na_2CO_3$. Due to the high adsorption capacity, the simple magnetic separation, and the high desorption efficiency, this nano-adsorbent produced from inexpensive and abundant resources may attract the attention of the industries to apply for removing various metal anionic contaminants from wastewater.

  • $Fe_3O_4$ and $CoFe_2O_4$ magnetic nanoparticles have been synthesized successfully in aqueous solution and coated with oleic acid. The solid and organic solution of the synthesized nanoparticles was obtained. Self-assembled monolayer films were formed using organic solution of these nanoparticles. The crystal sizes determined by Debye-Scherre equation with XRD data were found close to the particle sizes calculated from TEM images, and this indicates that the synthesized particles are nanocrystalline. Especially, EDS, ED, FT-IR, TGA/DTA and DSC were used to characterize the nanoparticles and the oleic acid adsorption, and it was found that oleic acid molecule on the $Fe_3O_4$ nanoparticle is a bilayer adsorption, while that on $CoFe_2O_4$ nanoparticle is single layer adsorption. The superparamagnetic behavior of the nanoparticles was documented by the hysteresis loop measured at 300 K.
