A novel carrier-based PWM (CBPWM) strategy of a three-level NPC converter is proposed in this paper. The novel strategy can eliminate the low-frequency neutral point (NP) voltage oscillation under the entire modulation index and full power factor. The basic principle of the novel strategy is introduced. The internal modulation wave relationship between the novel CBPWM strategy and traditional SPWM strategy is also studied. All 64 modulation wave solutions of the CBPWM strategy are derived. Furthermore, the proposed CBPWM strategy is compared with traditional SPWM strategy regarding the output phase voltage THD characteristics, DC voltage utilization ratio, and device switching losses. Comparison results show that the proposed strategy does not cause NP voltage oscillation. As a result, no low-frequency harmonics occur on output line-to-line voltage and phase current. The novel strategy also has higher DC voltage utilization ratio (15.47% higher than that of SPWM strategy), whereas it causes larger device switching losses (4/3 times of SPWM strategy). The effectiveness of the proposed modulation strategy is verified by simulation and experiment results.

This paper presents the application of Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) in order to simultaneous control of power flow and voltage and also damping of Low Frequency Oscillations (LFO) at a Single-Machine Infinite-Bus (SMIB) power system installed with UPFC. PI type controllers are commonly used controllers for UPFC control. But for the sake of some drawbacks of PI type controllers, the scope for finding a better control scheme still remains. In this regard, in this paper the new IP type controllers are considered as UPFC controllers. The parameters of these IP type controllers are tuned using Genetic Algorithms (GA). Also a stabilizer supplementary controller based UPFC is considered for increasing power system damping. To show the ability of IP controllers, this controller is compared with classical PI type controllers. Simulation results emphasis on the better performance of IP controller in comparison with PI controller.

An ultrasonic linear motors consist of a slider and an ultrasonic vibrator which generates an elliptical oscillations. The ultrasonic linear motors mainly consist of an ultrasonic vibrator which generates elliptical oscillations. The ultrasonic linear motor fabricated in this paper was the use of the 1st longitudinal(L1) and 4th bending vibrations(B4). In order to low driving voltage and improve the life time of the ultrasonic motor, we used stacked piezoceramics. Stacked piezoceramics are adhered to aluminum elastic material. The finite element method was used to optimize dimension of ultrasonic vibrator and direction of vibratory displacement. As a result of estimating the characteristics of the ultrasonic linear motor, no-load velocity was 0.204[m/s] when applied voltage was 70[ $V_{rms}$] in resonance frequency.y.

In this paper a robust method is presented for the combined design of STATCOM and Power System Stabilizer (PSS) controllers in order to enhance the damping of the low frequency oscillations in power systems. The combined design problems among PSS and STATCOM internal ac and dc voltage controllers has been taken into consideration. The equations that describe the proposed system have been linearized and a Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) has been designed for the PSS. Then, the Particle Swarm Optimization technique (PSO) which has a strong ability to find the most optimistic results is employed to search for the optimal STATCOM controller parameters. The proposed controllers are evaluated on a single machine infinite bus power system with the STATCOM installed in the midpoint of the transmission line. The results analysis reveals that the combined design has an excellent capability in damping a power system's low frequency oscillations, and that it greatly enhances the dynamic stability of power systems. Moreover, a system performance analysis under different operating conditions and some performance indices studies show the effectiveness of the combined design.

An ultrasonic linear motor was composed of a slider and a stator vibrator including piezoelectric material and elastic material. The ultrasonic linear motors mainly consist of an ultrasonic vibrator which generates elliptical oscillations. L$_1$-B$_4$ ultrasonic linear motor use longitudinal and bending multi-vibration. In order to low driving voltage and improve the life time of the ultrasonic oscillator, we used stacked piezoceramics. Stacked piezoceramics are adhered to aluminum elastic material. The finite element method was used to optimize dimension of ultrasonic vibrator and direction of vibratory displacement. This paper proposes the use of fuzzy applications to a 4-machine and 10-bus system to check stability in open conditions. Fuzzy controllers and the excitation of a synchronous generator are added. Power system stabilizers (PSSs) are added to the excitation system to enhance damping during low frequency oscillations. A fuzzy logic power system stabilizer (PSS) for stability enhancement of a multi-machine power system is also presented. To attain stability enhancement, speed deviation ($\Delta\omega$) and acceleration ($\Delta\varpi$) of the Kota Thermal synchronous generator rotor are taken as inputs to the fuzzy logic controller. These variables have significant effects on the damping of generator shaft mechanical oscillations. The stabilizing signals are computed using fuzzy membership functions that are dependent on these variables. The performance of the fuzzy logic PSS is compared with the open power system, after which the simulations are tested under different operating conditions and changes in reference voltage. The simulation results are quite encouraging and satisfactory. Similarly, the system is tested for the different defuzzification methods, and based on the results, the centroid method elicits the best possible system response.
Unified power flow controller (UPFC) is the most reliable device in the FACTS concept. It has the ability to adjust all three control parameters effective in power flow and voltage stability. In this paper, a linearized model of a power system installed with a UPFC has been presented. UPFC has four control loops that by adding an extra signal to one of them, increases dynamic stability and load angle oscillations are damped. In this paper, after open loop eigenvalue (electro mechanical mode) calculations, state-space equations have been used to design damping controller and it has been considered to influence active and reactive power flow durations as the input of damping controller, in addition to the common speed duration of synchronous generators as input damper signal. To increase stability, further Lead-Lag and LQR controllers, a novel on-line adaptive controller has been used analytically to identify power system parameters. Closed-loop calculations of the electro mechanical mode verify the improvement of system pole placement after controller designing. Suitable operation of adaptive controller to decrease rotor speed oscillations against input mechanical torque disturbances is confirmed by the simulation results.

This paper presents application results of the augmented matrix eigen-sensitivity theories to TCSC siting problem for damping the inter-area low frequency oscillation in the large KEPCO system. First and second-order eigen-sensitivities of the inter-area low frequency oscillation in the large KEPCO system. First and second-order eigen-sensitivities of the inter-area mode are computed fro changes in susceptance of the transmission lines. The lines having high sensitivity are chosen as the initial candidates for installing TCSC. Then for each of the chosen candidates, Bodeplot of the transfer function with line susceptance as the input and the bus voltage at one side of the line as the output is computed. Using the Bode plots, the lines having any zeros near the inter-area mode are screened out since design of TCSC controller is very difficult in such a case. The $H_{\infty}$ TCSC controller installed at any finally chosen candidate is found to be effective in damping the inter-area oscillation, and the proposed TCSC siting algorithm is proved to be valid. Design of $H_{\infty}$ controller is described in Part IIof this paper.

Advances in FPGA technology have enabled fast real-time simulation of power converters, filters and loads. FPGA based HIL (Hardware-In-the-Loop) simulators have revolutionized control hardware and software development for power electronics. Common time step sizes in the order of 100ns are sufficient for simulating switching frequency current and voltage ripples. In order to keep the time step as small as possible, ideal switching function models are often used to simulate the phase legs. This often produces inferior results when simulating the discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) and disabled operational states. Therefore, the corresponding measurement and protection units cannot be tested properly. This paper describes a new solution for this problem utilizing a discrete-time PI controller. The PI controller simulates the proper DC and low frequency AC components of the phase leg voltage during disabled operation. It also retains the advantage of fast real-time execution of switch-based models when an accurate simulation of high frequency junction capacitor oscillations is not necessary.

In this paper, the boost Power Factor Correction(PFC) technique for Direct Torque Control(DTC) of brushless DC motor drive in the constant torque region is implemented on a TMS320F2812DSP. Unlike conventional six-step PWM current control, by properly selecting the inverter voltage space vectors of the two-phase conduction mode from a simple look-up table at a predefined sampling time, the desired quasi-square wave current is obtained, therefore a much faster torque response is achieved compared to conventional current control. Furthermore, to eliminate the low-frequency torque oscillations caused by the non-ideal trapezoidal shape of the actual back-EMF waveform of the BLDC motor, a pre-stored back-EMF versus position look-up table is designed. The duty cycle of the boost converter is determined by a control algorithm based on the input voltage, output voltage which is the dc-link of the BLDC motor drive, and inductor current using average current control method with input voltage feed-forward compensation during each sampling period of the drive system. With the emergence of high-speed digital signal processors(DSPs), both PFC and simple DTC algorithms can be executed during a single sampling period of the BLDC motor drive. In the proposed method, since no PWM algorithm is required for DTC or BLDC motor drive, only one PWM output for the boost converter with 80 kHz switching frequency is used in a TMS320F2812 DSP. The validity and effectiveness of the proposed DTC of BLDC motor drive scheme with PFC are verified through the experimental results. The test results verify that the proposed PFC for DTC of BLDC motor drive improves power factor considerably from 0.77 to as close as 0.9997 with and without load conditions.
