  • In this paper, a power controller and 3 phase voltage source inverter are proposed for the improvement of weldability of large scaler Mash seam welder. The welder system is designed for the low cost and the improvement of weldability. For this system, the thyristor convertor has performed constant current controlling in the output terminal by using PAM type inverter. We have simulated our algorithm and made a prototype welder for experiment. Through the experiment, we have confirmed the improvement of weldability of our system.

  • Range extenders, which are power generation systems driven by small engines, extend the driving distance and time of electric vehicles (EVs) through continuous charging of batteries. The currently used range extenders with gasoline engines pose limitations with regard to the realization of high-power compact systems, owing to their complex structure and low energy density. In contrast, micro gas turbine (MGT) range extenders (MGT power packs) possess high power and low weight, and can therefore be significantly reduced in size despite increase in speed. In this study, an MGT power pack for the range extenders of EVs was developed using a turbo-prop micro turbine, an alternator for passenger vehicles and electric batteries. The operating characteristics of the MGT power pack were measured through a series of experiments conducted under electrical no-load and load conditions. Their power generation performance and efficiency were measured under various electrical loads and power transmission gear ratios. From the results, electrical load was found to have no influence on power generation performance. The maximum electrical power output was 0.8 kW at a core turbine speed of 150 krpm, and the application of 3:1 reduction gear to the turbine output shaft increased the power to 1.5 kW by 88%. This implies that the test results demonstrated stable power generation performance of the MGT power pack regardless of vehicle load changes, thus revealing its feasibility for use with the range extenders of EVs.

  • Power quality promotion has received increasing attention because of the wide use of semiconductor devices in recent decades. Reactive power regulation is crucial to ensuring the stable operation of power systems. In this study, a continuous reactive power controller, which is referred to as a parallel-connected magnetic energy recovery switch (MERS), is developed to regulate voltage or power factor in power grids. First, the operating principle is introduced, and a mathematical model is built. Second, a new control method for restraining current harmonics and the peak voltages of capacitors is presented. Using the proposed method, the MERS shows a wide range in terms of reactive power compensation. Finally, the performance of the proposed controller is demonstrated through computer simulations and experiments. Unlike STATCOMs, the proposed controller entails low losses, adopts a small dc capacitor, and offers ease of use.

  • Mobile systems have relatively limited resources such as low memory, slow CPU, or low power comparing to desktop systems. In this paper, we present a new 3D mesh connectivity coding algorithm especially optimized for mobile systems(i.e., mobile phones). By using adaptive octree data structure for vertex positions, a new distance-based connectivity coding is proposed. Our algorithm uses fixed point arithmetic and minimizes dynamic memory allocation, appropriate for mobile systems. We also demonstrate test data to show the utility of our mobile 3D mesh codec.

  • In wireless communications, chaotic communications have been a field of interest due to its low complexity in hardware implementation and low power consumption in chaotic signal generation. Among the modulation schemes using the chaotic signal, Differential Chaos Shift Keying (DCSK) is a robust non coherent technique. As in the conventional communication systems, chaos-based systems are required to provide reasonable bit error performance in the presence of a narrow-band signal coming from any other systems. The frequency band of this foreign narrow band signal may lie within the bandwidth of the chaos-based systems. This situation may occur when chaotic signal transmission is done in the presence of other conventional communication system. This paper has evaluated the performance of the non coherent differential chaos shift keying (DCSK) system under the presence of conventional non-chaotic transmit reference system. Both systems are assumed to have same data rates. The mathematical expressions for the bit error rate (BER) are derived with computer simulations to verify the analytical results.

  • Turbo codes, whose performance in bit error rate is close to the Shannon limit, have been adopted as a part of standard for the third-generation high-speed wireless data services. Iterative Turbo decoding results in decoding delay and high power consumption. As wireless communication systems can only use limited power supply, low power design techniques are essential for mobile device implementation. This paper proposes new effective criteria for stopping the iteration process in turbo decoding to reduce power consumption. By setting two stopping criteria, decodable threshold and undecodable threshold, we can effectively reduce the number of decoding iterations with only negligible error-correcting performance degradation. Simulation results show that the number of unsuccessful error-correction can be reduced by 89% and the number of decoding iterations can be reduced by 29% on the average among 12500 simulations when compared with those of an existing typical method.

  • As the need for security of SCADA systems is increasing, significant progress has been made in research on security of control protocol. However, very few security solutions were adapted to legacy SCADA system. The reasons for non-adoption are latency, cost and key management problem. We propose a low latency, economic security Solution to solve these issues. The proposed solution performs security function in data link layer and has minimum overhead to minimize latency. Furthermore, we try to solve the key management problem by providing systematic security keys and key distribution method.

  • Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) suffers from spectral nulls of frequency-selective fading channels. Linear precoded (LP-) OFDM is an effective method that guarantees symbol detectability by spreading the frequency-domain symbols over the whole spectrum. This paper proposes a computationally efficient and low-cost implementation for discrete Hartley transform (DHT) precoded OFDM systems. Compared to conventional DHT-OFDM systems, at the transmitter, both the DHT and the inverse discrete Fourier transform are replaced by a one-level butterfly structure that involves only one addition per symbol to generate the time-domain DHT-OFDM signal. At the receiver, only the DHT is required to recover the distorted signal with a single-tap equalizer in contrast to both the DHT and the DFT in the conventional DHT-OFDM. Theoretical analysis of DHT-OFDM with linear equalizers is presented and confirmed by numerical simulation. It is shown that the proposed DHT-OFDM system achieves similar performance when compared to other LP-OFDMs but exhibits a lower implementation complexity and peak-to-average power ratio.
