This study was designed to evaluate health and nutritional status of elderly females according to their family type. The participants were 157 elderly women(41 living alone, 45 living with a spouse, and 71 living with family). Among them, the subjects answered that their health rated as good condition, the elderly living with a spouse had significantly higher proportions than those living alone and living with family. Serum cholesterol and fasting blood glucose of the respondents living with a spouse were lower than those of the respondents living alone or with family. A dietary assessment with a 24-hour recall method represented that the elderly living alone had lower nutrient intakes, especially the intake of Ca. Most of women living alone or with family were consuming less than 75% of the Korean Recommended Dietary Allowances(RDA). For the females living with a spouse, the number or nutrients consumed below 7s% or the Korean RDA were significantly lower than that for those living alone and the elderly living with family. As a result of the above analysis, the health and nutritional statement of old women with a spouse was better than that of the old living alone or with family.
Purpose: This study was a descriptive survey research to compare and to examine the levels of physical health status. family support, and life satisfaction between the aged living alone and living with family, the relations among the factors. Methods: Subjects were the 267 aged (living alone: 133 subjects: living with family: 134 subjects) in Seoul and Gyung-gi province. Measures were Cornell Medical Index(CMI) to check physical health status, family support scale developed by Cobb(l976) to check the family support. and elderly life satisfaction scale developed by Yun(1982) to check life satisfaction. Data were collected from March to August. 2006. Collected data were analyzed through SPSS/PC 12.0 version. Results: First. degree of the physical health status. family support. and life satisfaction in the elderly living with family were better than them in the elderly living alone. Second. the relations among the factors were all positive correlation. Third. the education and monthly allowance in aged living alone did effect to the life satisfaction. Conclusion: Clinical practice should be focused on family support/social support for the aged living alone. Also nursing practitioners for the aged living alone should consider the general characteristics of them.
The purpose of this study was to assess dietary habits and seasonal variation and diversity of food intakes of elderly women living alone as compared to those of elderly women living with family in a rural area. Forty nine elderly women living alone and forty one elderly women living with family who reside in Goryeong-gun, Gyeongbuk, were interviewed using questionnaires in summer 2005, and their food intakes were assessed secondly in winter and thirdly in spring 2006. The average ages were 74.7 years for elderly living alone and 72.8 years for elderly living with family. Tooth status and bone fracture experience were similar between the groups. The prevalence of musculoskeletal disease was 61.2% and that of circulatory disease was 32.7% of the subjects. Average of total score of mental depression of the subjects was 5.94 out of 12 points, and it was not significantly different between the two groups. Skipping meals was more frequent and mealtime was more irregular in the elderly women living alone as compared with the elderly women living with family. Consumption of dietary supplements was also less in the elderly women living alone. Food intakes by the elderly women living alone tended to be lower than those by the elderly women living with family. Dietary diversity score was significantly lower with the elderly women living alone as compared with the elderly women living with family only in summer (p < 0.01). Percentages of the subjects who have taken meat group and vegetable group were significantly lower in the elderly living alone compared with the elderly living with family during summer. Therefore, it is necessary to develop food assistance or supporting program suited for the season within a community for elderly women living alone.
The purpose of this research is to study the need for living and the relationship between the need and the perceived family well-being among families in rural areas and to suggest the index of the family well-being for them. One hundred fifty homemakers in the six rural areas in Chunlabuk-do were sampled for this research and all of them were aged under 60. Data were statistically analized by using statistical softwere package 'Statgraphics' and null jhyposeses were statistically tested at p<.10. From the results of this study, rural homemakers reported, generally, higher levels of the need for the various aspects of family living compared to those of the perceived levels of the family well-being. The need, the satisfaction and the dissatisfaction levels of the various aspects of family oiving were affected more frequently by living area, average monthly income, and the period of living whitin the same area. The satisfaction with the family well-being and living in rural area were affected more powerfully by subvariables related to the family financial living than by any other variables. The need for economic environment, the satisfaction with perceived level of assets, and income were major representative variables for the family finances. In case of the family interpersonal living, the need and the satisfaction with relationship between spouses and the family structure were more powerful varibales than any other variables. The relationship betweenparents and children was more powerful variable for the perceived family well-being than any other variables related to the family interpersonal living. Sampled homemakers thought that the satisfaction with relationship between spouses was the most important in family interpersonal living. The needs for household equipment and living conditions was positively influenced on the need of household work and the satisfaction with those was negatively influnced on satisfaction with present household work.
Interest in family living culture is decreasing in Korea, compared to interest in culture technology and culture industry which are rapidly increasing. Although expenditure on cultural activities is generally increasing, activities that are most preferred are concentrated on personal leisure or public performances. This study takes an in-depth look at the underlying issues related to family living culture in order to highlight its necessity and importance to productive family life. For this purpose, the dynamics of past and current family living culture in Korea are analyzed, with a particular focus on the role of education. Trial family living culture program are suggested based on overall findings.
This study is designed to examine influences of living arrangements on psycho-social factors, health and nutritional status, dietary adequacy and meal service utility patterns of the elderly. Nutritional status was evaluated by Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA). Three hundred and nine elderly (110 men and 199 women) who participated in meal service in the Chung-buk province were investigated. Proportion of the elderly living alone, couples only, living with spouse and family, living with family without spouse; and living with other than family were 30.7%, 25.9%, 14.2%, 24.3% and 4.9% respectively. The mean age of the elderly was 74.1 years and the elderly who are living couples only and living with spouse and family were younger than those with other living status. Living arrangements seem to be related to psycho-social factors, health and nutritional status, and dietary quality. Those who live alone and live with other than family were mostly women and they have lower socio-economic status, psycho-social, health and nutritional status and dietary patterns compared with those of the elderly who are living with spouse or family. It was found that the elderly who live a couple only and live with spouse and family had better emotional, health and nutritional index than those of the elderly who live with family without spouse, especially in case of females. Most of elderly perceived that participation of meal service programs had a positive effect on their daily life and satisfied with meals. The elderly living alone and living with other than family were more frequently using meal service but had a negative attitude about the charged meal service for better quality than the elderly with other living status. The most important reason for all the elderly to participate in meal service was to meet their friends and then to get other services. Particularly those who are living alone and living with other than family showed lack of moivation to prepare and set the meal, and for them the economic reason is also important. They also replied that the poor health and lack of other help were the most difficult problems for them to prepare meals. It would be effective to provide nutritional services that meet specific needs of the elderly according to their characteristics and living environment.
This study was purposed to analysis the satisfaction with occupation and family living of husbands and wives involved in the family business management. Analyzed data was the KHPS (Korean Household Panel Study) which was collected by Daewoo Economic Research Institute. Subjects were 646 husbands and wives. Results were as fellows: 1) The family business was preferred by the middle age than younger one. In many cases, size of the family business was smart, but variation was relatively large. 2) Wives'satisfaction with family living was lower than husbands'one. Differences between wife's and husband's satisfaction with occupation were not appeared. 3) As couples'one were younger, as the satisfaction with health and couple's relationships were higher. Especially frequency of the out of meal and vacation experience in the last year were important variables in the satisfaction with family living.4) Frequency of the out of meal was important variable in the explaining the satisfaction with the income, stability, and a bright future of the family business.
The purpose of this study is to provide suggestion for the establishment of a living information environment for a family-friendly living environment. The survey data on a sample of three hundred and eighty-four married respondents with at least one child in elementary school that were collected for 15 days from April 16 to April 30 of 2010 were analyzed. The results are as follows: It is important to establish a family-friendly living information environment as one of the important elements for a family-friendly living environment. Two aspects ought to be considered in establishing a family-friendly living information environment. One is the supply aspect of the family-friendly living information: this encompasses the usage of facilities in the community, the residents in the community as leaders and the user-friendly living information. The other is the user aspect of the living information, which involves the education on living information for the residents in the community.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to identify the effects of the elderly's health statuses, health behavior, and social relations on their health-related quality of life (HRQoL) according to their family types. Methods: The subjects of this study were 1000 elderly persons (298 living alone, 420 living with their spouses, and 282 living with their family)living in C city in Gangwon Province. Data were collected through structured questionnaires from July 20 to September 30, 2015. The SPSS/WIN program was used for data analysis. Results: The HRQoL of the elderly living alone was much lower than the other groups. The most influential factors on the HRQoL include self-rated health and depressive symptoms in all three groups. Social activities and skipping meals were associated with the HRQoL of the elderly living alone and living with their spouses, while marital status, number of chronic disease, and instrumental activities of daily living were associated with the HRQoL of the elderly living with their family. Conclusion: Nurses should take into account family types when designing interventions for improving the HRQoL of the elderly.
This study aims to compare the husband's stress, communication, family cohesion and adaptation which contribute to the internal structure of conjugal understanding between families living apart from one another and those living together. The data for analysis was derived from questionnaires. 172 husbands from families living apart and 185 husbands who live with their families. The data was treated by spss pc+ program and the methods of analysis were frequency, t-test and one-way ANOVA. The results of this study were as follows : 1. Husband's stress in conjugal understanding in families living apart was higher than those who live with their families. 2. Between the husbands whose families are living apart and those who are living together, there were no significant differences in effort levels to overcome stress, family cohesion, family adaptation and communication needs for conjugal understanding. 3. Husbands who live with their families communicate differently according to the degree of their stress levels. 4. Low stress levels led to high family cohesion and family adaptation in both cases. 5. High communication levels led to high family cohesion and family adaptation in both cases.
