households using the 2007 Korean Retirement and Income Study. Elderly households were classified into three groups based on the comparisons among the costs of living and then the factors influencing the probability of belonging to each group were investigated using multiple logistic regression models. The major findings are as follows. Firstly, the subjective adequate cost of living was the highest and the subjective minimum cost of living was the lowest. The actual cost of living was in between. Secondly, 42.6% of elderly households belonged to Group1(whose actual cost of living was less than the subjective minimum cost of living), 30.0% was classified into Group2(whose actual cost of living was greater than the subjective minimum cost of living but less than the subjective adequate cost of living) and the actual cost of living of the remaining 27.4% was greater than the subjective adequate cost of living(Group3). Thirdly, income was the strongest factor influencing the probability of belonging to each group, but the influencing factors were different for the logistic models for Group1 and Group3 based on Group2.

This study was carried out to investigate the nutritional and physical status of children, aged 11 and 12 years, living in Haenam Koon (living at home) and in Mokpo City (living in an orphan asylum) located in Chonnam during the period of August 2 nd to 9 th in 1984. The mean values of height, chestgirth, arm circumference and head circumference between both groups of living in the rural area and in the city orphan asylum were not statistically different and similar to Korean Growth Standard. Exceptionally, the values of height and weight of male living at home in the rural area were lower than Korean Growth Standard (p<0.01). The weight of male living in the city orphan asylum was higher han that of male living at home in the rural area (p<0.01), and the skin fold thickness of female living at home was higher than that of male living at home (p <0.01). The physical indices of children living in the city orphan asylum were more or less higher than those of living at home in the rural area, but the relative weight of male was only significant (p<0.05). The animal protein intake was $8.4{\sim}8.6%$ of total food intake of living at home in the rural area and 6.2% in living in the city orphan asylum. The intake of legumes of children living in the city orphan asylum was more two times than that of living at home in the rural area, but overall fruit intake of living at home was more about two times than that of living in the city orphan asylum. The average intake of all nutrients except thiamine and niacin was lower than RDA. Especially the calcium intake of children in both groups was the lowest of all nutrients ($28.9{\sim}40.6%$ of RDA). Children living at home in the rural area had significantly higher intake of fat and ascorbic acid than children living in the city orphan asylum (p<0.01).
In this study, the effect of the air purifier located in the living room on the reduction of PM2.5 concentration in the living room and bedroom was investigated. Measurements were carried out in real-life for about 2 weeks in a Korean apartment building where a 3-person household had lived and the exclusive private area was 84.9 m2. When the air purifier in the living room was operating, the change in PM2.5 concentration was measured when the door to the bedroom connected to the living room was opened and closed. In the case of living with the bedroom door open, the average PM2.5 concentrations in the living room and bedroom were almost the same. When living with the bedroom door closed, the average PM2.5 in the living room was higher than in the bedroom. The ventilation and cooking effects in the living room mainly affected the PM2.5 concentration in the living room. Only one air purifier in the living room was able to keep the PM2.5 concentration in the living room and bedroom low.
The purpose of this study was to assess dietary habits and seasonal variation and diversity of food intakes of elderly women living alone as compared to those of elderly women living with family in a rural area. Forty nine elderly women living alone and forty one elderly women living with family who reside in Goryeong-gun, Gyeongbuk, were interviewed using questionnaires in summer 2005, and their food intakes were assessed secondly in winter and thirdly in spring 2006. The average ages were 74.7 years for elderly living alone and 72.8 years for elderly living with family. Tooth status and bone fracture experience were similar between the groups. The prevalence of musculoskeletal disease was 61.2% and that of circulatory disease was 32.7% of the subjects. Average of total score of mental depression of the subjects was 5.94 out of 12 points, and it was not significantly different between the two groups. Skipping meals was more frequent and mealtime was more irregular in the elderly women living alone as compared with the elderly women living with family. Consumption of dietary supplements was also less in the elderly women living alone. Food intakes by the elderly women living alone tended to be lower than those by the elderly women living with family. Dietary diversity score was significantly lower with the elderly women living alone as compared with the elderly women living with family only in summer (p < 0.01). Percentages of the subjects who have taken meat group and vegetable group were significantly lower in the elderly living alone compared with the elderly living with family during summer. Therefore, it is necessary to develop food assistance or supporting program suited for the season within a community for elderly women living alone.
Research outcome shows the following: 1. Estimation by the year 2015 on the number of the aged people and on the number of the household of living alone and living with spouse only, per age-cohort by 5 years, per basic self-govern-ins local groups and the city of Daegu. The result is supposed to serve as meaningful basic material in building up future policies in many areas for the aged people living in their homes. 2. Estimation varies according to the areas and the age-cohorts. In urban areas, increase of the numbers of the households of the aged people living alone and living with spouse only is estimated in every age-cohort. In rural areas, variance between two age-groups, old-old and young-old, is observed. Both of the numbers of the households for the aged living alone and the aged living with spouse only have increased continuously by the year 2005. But the hither-to increase tendency is estimated to reverse itself to a decrease starting from the younger within the young-old age group, and the ratio of the old-old age-group in rural population will sharply increase starting from the year 2005. Such increase in the number of the aged people in need of the housing and the social support requires the increasing policy consideration for the issue of housing for the aged living in their homes. In spite of the decreasing tendency in the number of the aged people living alone and living with spouse only in rural areas, still there will continue to be more number of such households than in urban area for the time being. The government of Gyeongsangbuk-Do should pay more consideration to the old-old aged living alone and living with spouse only in rural areas, while being prepared for the sharply increasing households for the aged living alone and living with spouse only in urban areas.
This study was designed to evaluate health and nutritional status of elderly females according to their family type. The participants were 157 elderly women(41 living alone, 45 living with a spouse, and 71 living with family). Among them, the subjects answered that their health rated as good condition, the elderly living with a spouse had significantly higher proportions than those living alone and living with family. Serum cholesterol and fasting blood glucose of the respondents living with a spouse were lower than those of the respondents living alone or with family. A dietary assessment with a 24-hour recall method represented that the elderly living alone had lower nutrient intakes, especially the intake of Ca. Most of women living alone or with family were consuming less than 75% of the Korean Recommended Dietary Allowances(RDA). For the females living with a spouse, the number or nutrients consumed below 7s% or the Korean RDA were significantly lower than that for those living alone and the elderly living with family. As a result of the above analysis, the health and nutritional statement of old women with a spouse was better than that of the old living alone or with family.
