  • An adaptive predictive control for steam-reforming plant which consist of a steam-gas reformer and a waste heat steam-boiler was studied by using MIMO bilinear model. The simulation experiments of the process identification were performed by using linear and bilinear models. From the simulation results it was found that the bilinear model represented the dynamic behavior of a steam-reforming plant very well. ARMA model was used in the process identification and the adaptive predictive control. To verify the performance and effectiveness of the adaptive predictive controller proposed in this study the simulation results of steam-reforming plant control based on bilinear model were compared to those of linear model. The simulation results showed that the adaptive predictive controller based on bilinear model provides better performance than those of linear model.

  • In this work, the model predictive control method was applied to a linear model and a nonlinear model of steam generators. The parameters of a linear model for steam generators are very different according to the power levels. The model predictive controller was designed for the linear steam generator model at a fixed power level. The proposed controller at the fixed power level showed good performance for any other power levels by designed changing only the input-weighting factor. As the input-weighting factor usually increases, its relative stability does so. The steam generator has some nonlinear characteristics. Therefore, the proposed algorithm has been implemented for a nonlinear model of the nuclear steam generator to verify its real performance and also, showed good performance.

  • Nonlinear unified predictive control(UPC) algorithm was applied to the temperature control of a batch polymerization reactor for polymethylmethacrylate(PMMA). Before the polymerization reaction is initiated, the parameters of the process model are determined by the recursive least squares(RLS) method. During the reaction, nonlinearities due to generation of heat of reaction and variation of heat transfer coefficients are predicted through the nonlinear model developed. These nonlinearities are added to the process output from the linear process model. And then, the predicted process output is used to calculate the control output sequence. The performance of nonlinear control algorithm was verified by simulation and compared with that of the linear unified predictive control algorithm. In the experiment of a batch PMMA polymerization, nonlinear unified predictive control was implemented to regulate the temperature of the reactor, and the validity of the nonlinear model was verified through the experimental results. The performance of the nonlinear controller turned out to be superior to that of the linear controller for tracking abrupt changes in setpoint.

  • This paper proposes a linear model predictive control of 6-DOF remotely operated underwater vehicles using nonlinear robust internal-loop compensator (NRIC). First, we design a integrator embedded linear model prediction controller for a linear nominal model, and then let the real model follow the values calculated through forward dynamics. This work is carried out through an NRIC and in this process, modeling errors and external disturbance are compensated. This concept is similar to disturbance observer-based control, but it has the difference that H optimality is guaranteed. Finally, tracking results at trajectory containing the velocity discontinuity point and the position tracking performance in the disturbance environment is confirmed through the comparative study with a traditional inverse dynamics PD controller.

  • In this paper, an extension of model predictive controller for nonlinear process using Takagi-Sugeno(TS) fuzzy model is proposed Since the consequent parts of TS fuzzy model comprise linear equations of input and output variables. it is locally linear, and the Generalized Predictive Control(GPC) technique which has been developed to control Linear Time Invariant(LTI) plants, can be extended as a parallel distributed controller. Also fuzzy soft constraints are introduced to handle both equality and inequality constraints in a unified form. So the traditional constrained GPC can be transferred to a standard fuzzy optimization problem. The proposed method conciliates the advantages of the fuzzy modeling with the advantages of the constrained predictive control, and the degree of freedom is increased in specifying the desired process behavior.

  • Generalized linear models and generalized linear mixed models (GLMMs) are fundamental tools for predictive analyses. In insurance, GLMMs are particularly important, because they provide not only a tool for prediction but also a theoretical justification for setting premiums. Although thousands of resources are available for introducing GLMMs as a classical and fundamental tool in statistical analysis, few resources seem to be available for the insurance industry. This study targets insurance professionals already familiar with basic actuarial mathematics and explains GLMMs and their linkage with classical actuarial pricing tools, such as the Buhlmann premium method. Focus of the study is mainly on the modeling aspect of GLMMs and their application to pricing, while avoiding technical issues related to statistical estimation, which can be automatically handled by most statistical software.

  • The field of human judgment and decision making provides useful methodologies for examining the human decision making process and substantive results. One of the methodologies is a lens model analysis which can examine valid nonlinearity in the human decision making process. Using the method, valid nonlinearity in human decision behavior can be successfully detected. Two linear(statistical) models of human experts and two nonlinear models of human experts are compared in terms of predictive accuracy (predictive validity). The results indicate that nonlinear models can capture factors(valid nonlinearity) that contribute to the expert's predictive accuracy, but not factors (inconsistency) that detract from their predictive accuracy. Then, it is argued that nonlinear models cab be more accurate than linear models, or as accurate as human experts, especially when human experts employ valid nonlinear strategies in decision making.

  • This paper considers a model predictive control problem of discrete-time constrained systems with time-varying delay. For this problem, a delay dependent state feedback control approach is used to achieve asymptotic stabilization of systems with input constraints. Based on Lyapunov stability theory, a new stability condition is obtained via linear matrix inequality formulation to find cost monotonicity condition of the model predictive control algorithm which guarantee the closed loop stability. Finally, the proposed method is applied to a numerical example in order to show the effectiveness of our results.

  • This study presented a model predictive tracking control algorithm of autonomous truck based on object state estimation using extended Kalman filter. To design the model, the 1-layer laser scanner was used to estimate position and velocity of the object using extended Kalman filter. Based on these estimations, the desired linear path for object tracking was computed. The lateral and yaw angle errors were computed using the computed linear path and relative positions of the truck. The computed errors were used in the model predictive control algorithm to compute the optimal steering angle for object tracking. The performance evaluation was conducted on Matlab/Simulink environments using planar truck model and actual point data obtained from laser scanner. The evaluation results showed that the tracking control algorithm developed in this study can track the object reasonably based on the model predictive control algorithm based on the estimated states.
