  • Estimation of winning percentage in baseball has always been particularly interesting to many baseball fans. We have fitted models including linear regression and Pythagorean formula to the Korean baseball data of seasons from 1982 to 2015. Using RMSE criterion for both the linear formula and the Pythagorean formula, we compared two models in predicting the actual winning percentage. Pythagorean expectation is superior to linear formula when there is either high or low winning percentage. Two methods yield very similar efficiencies when the actual winning percentage is about 50%. To understand and use for estimating winning percentage, it is easier linear formula as estimated equations.

  • This paper deals with the eigenvalue assignment technique for linear time-varying systems to achieve feedback stabilization. For this, we introduce the novel eigenvalue concepts. Then, we propose the Ackerman-like formula for linear time-varying systems. It is believed that this technique is the generalized version of the Ackerman formula forlinear time-invariant systems. The advantages of the proposed technique are that it does not require the transformation of the original system into the phase-variable form nor the computation of eigenvalues of the original system.

  • This paper presents linear algebraic equations in the form of recursive formula to compute elastokinematic characteristics of a suspension system. Conventional methods of elastokinematic analysis are based on nonlinear kinematic constrant equations and force equilibrium equations for constrained mechanical systems, which require complicated and time-consuming implicit computing methods to obtain the solution. The proposed linearized elastokinematic equations in the form of recursive formula are derived based on the assumption that the displacements of elastokinematic behavior of a constrained mechanical system under external forces are very small. The equations can be easily computerized in codes, and have the advantage of sharing the input data of existing general multi body dynamic analysis codes. The equations can be applied to any form of suspension once the type of kinematic joints and elastic components are identified. The validity of the method has been proved through the comparison of the results from established elastokinematic analysis software. Error estimation and analysis due to piecewise linear assumption are also discussed.

  • Goda formula (Goda, 1973) has been used in the determination of wave pressures acting on a large size caisson such as the pier of the cable stayed bridge at sea. Goda formula, however, is to evaluate the wave pressures acting the infinite vertical caisson of composite breakwater so that it can`t be applied to a large caisson with finite width and length because of diffraction effects. In the present study, three dimensional nonlinear frequence domain method based on perturbation method and boundary integral method is applied to the computation of the linear and nonlinear wave pressures acting on the front of a large size caisson under the variation of its width and length, and angle of incident wave. The numerical results are compared to Goda\`s ones, and then the characteristics of wave pressure distributions acting on a large size caisson are discussed.

  • The dual singular function method(DSFM) is a numerical algorithm to get optimal solution including corner singularities for Poisson and Helmholtz equations. In this paper, we apply DSFM to solve heat equation which is a time dependent problem. Since the DSFM for heat equation is based on DSFM for Helmholtz equation, it also need to use Sherman-Morrison formula. This formula requires linear solver n + 1 times for elliptic problems on a domain including n reentrant corners. However, the DSFM for heat equation needs to pay only linear solver once per each time iteration to standard numerical method and perform optimal numerical accuracy for corner singularity problems. Because the Sherman-Morrison formula is rather complicated to apply computation, we introduce a simplified formula by reanalyzing the Sherman-Morrison method.

  • The main purposes of this article are to introduce the theoretical backgrounds and empirical application methods of two different Models for the function of expenditure, and to compare the goodness-o(-fit of the two models: a single-equation model and a complete-system-of-demand-equation model. For the empirical analysis of the single-equation model, a linear formula and a double-leg formula were employed. In order to test the complete-system-of-demand-equation model empirically, the \"Linear Approximation/Almost Ideal Demand System (LA/AIDS)" was used. The independent variables were the total living expense and expenditure categories Price index. The data used in this study were obtained from the quarterly statistics of "The Annual Report on the Urban Family Income and Expenditure Survey (Dosigagyeyonbo)" and "The Annual Report on the Consumer Price Index (Sobijamulgajaryo)," for the years 1994 to 1997. The goodness-of-fit (R-square) was higher with the complete-system-of-demand-equation model than with the single-equation model for the budget share on food (excluding eating-out expenses) and for the share on cultural and recreational activities. However, there was no difference between the two models in terms of the proportion of the expenditure on automobile fuel.fuel.

  • This paper deals with eigenvalue assignment techniques for linear time-varying systems as a way of achieving feedback stabilization. For this, the novel eigenvalue concepts, which are the time-varying counterparts of the conventional (time-invariant) eigenvalue notions, are introduced. Then, the Ackermann-like formulae for SISO/MIMO linear time-varying systems are proposed. It is believed that these techniques are the generalized versions of the Ackermann formulae for linear time-invariant systems. The advantages of the proposed Ackermann-like formulae are that they neither require the transformation of the original system into the phase-variable form nor compute the eigenvalues of the original system. Two examples are given to demonstrate the capabilities of the proposed techniques.

  • We have investigated the properties of the Singular Spectrum Analysis (SSA) coupled with the Linear Recurrent Formula which made it possible to complement the parametric time series model. The SSA has been applied to extract the underlying properties of the principal component of hydrologic time series, which can often be identified as trends, seasonalities and other oscillatory series, or noise components. Generally, the prediction by the SSA method can be applied to hydrologic time series governed (may be approximately) by the linear recurrent formulae. This study has examined the forecasting ability of the SSA-LRF model. These methods were applied to monthly discharge and water surface level data. These models indicated that two of the time series have good abilities of forecasting, particularly showing promising results during the period of one year. Thus, the method presented in this study suggests a competitive methodology for the forecast of hydrologic time series.

  • In this study it can be confirmed that the formula by the free-rotational dipole theory is similiar with that by the phenomenological theory and the non-linear permittivity is determined only with the third harmonic conponent of polarization. Various parameters of VDCN copolymers were obtained from fitting results with the related formula.
