A study on the Branch library of Kyujang-gak at Kanghwa Magistracy as a deposit library (보존도서관으로서의 규장외각 연구)

  • After the establishment of the Korean Government in 1945, we were busy building up library collections, especially expanding the quantity of books. As a result, nowadays we witness the problem of limited space to keep the books. Space is one of the most important factors in the environment of library materials preservation. To solve this problem, we have to establish many levels of deposit library. The deposit library functions to preserve library materials. Preservation is defined as 'preservation', 'conservation' and 'restoration'. Deposit library was not for circulation that established in the Korea Dynasty, was succeeded by the branch libraries for Historical Deposit Libraries and branch library of Kanghwa magistracy of Kyujang-gak in the Chosun Dynasty. This study is to analyze the establishment, the activities and functions of the branch library of Kyujang-gak at Kanghwa Magistracy as a deposit library. Hence this study provides valuable information for future research of the history of deposit libraries in Korea.

Present Status of Scientific and Technical Information Activities in Russia (러시아의 과학기술정보활동 현황)

  • This paper outlines recent conditions after the collapse of former Soviet Union and presents activities in eight major information-related organizations including International Center for Scientific and Technical Information, Russian State Central Scientific Medical Library. Russian National Public Library for Science and Technology, All-Russian Institute for Science and Technical Information, Natural Sciences Library of Russian Academy of Sciences, Scientific and Technical Information Center of Russia, Russian State Library and All-Russian Scientific and Research Institute of State Patent Examination. All of these organizations face economic difficulties brought about by financial crisis and inflation as well as shortage of the state budget. In addition, the domestic information processing technology using computers and computer networks is generally inferior to that of developed western countries due to lack of growth of information infrastructure in Russia.

  • This study revisits issues for Big data. Three research questions, understanding the concept of Big data, important issues of Big data research and utilization methods for library information services, are explored by the literature and practice reviews. Study results revealed several important issues of Big data including the concept in the context of real world situation, the problems with the accuracy and reliability of the data, privacy and ethical issues, and issues of intellectual property rights. With understanding these issues, a few utilization methods were introduced for Library and Information services. It was included using its analysis for developing vision, adopting Library management, supporting community services, and providing customized information services for various users. The study concluded Big data analysis would effectively provide valid evidences for all those services.

  • The modern society is one of knowledge and information, and the library is one of the important routes through which they are obtained. But the collection in the library, from the onset of its creation and the process of accumulation, could only be bent and biased due to the prejudice and distortion, inevitably acting as an agent that mires the essence of the library as a distribution channel for knowledge and information of modern society. This study is the discussion about the necessity, main assignment and the methodology of library collection study. The collection study needs to focus on the process of accumulating the collection in the library to track down the Process of becoming biased.

Analysis of the Trends in the Field Studies of Library and Information Science in Korea (한국 문헌정보학의 현장연구 현황 분석)

  • This study analyzed how the field study has been done in the aspects of the quantity of the research works, research subjects, researchers, the organizations which supported the research expenses and so on by going through the 2,165 research papers of the leading scholarly journals in the field of Library and Information Science published in the recent 10 years. The study shows that the number of the field studies is 691 and it comprises 31.9% of the total research papers. Classifying the field studies by the types of the subject libraries, the ones about the public libraries comprise the largest proportion(35.6%) of the total papers by the number of 246. Classifying the field works by the topics, the studies on the library administration comprise the largest proportion(47.5%) of the total field studies by the number of 328. They are followed by the research on the information services, information systems and digital libraries, and finally the reading education in the listed order. Classifying the field works by the authors, the professors have written the most papers whose number is 329 and which comprise 47.6% of the total research papers. When it comes to supporting the research expenses, 145 studies were supported by the universities. and they comprise the definitely largest proportion(74.4%) of the total 195 articles supported from some organizations.

  • The specialized textbook library provides resources for textbook publishers and textbook development professionals as well as others in related fields who are committed to the educational development of our country. The textbook library also supports research and education among the faculty and students. But, when examining the reality of the textbook specialized library, analysis concludes that it faces various problems such as state-supported operating budget shortfalls, weakness of public infrastructure, difficulty in collection of textbook-related data, and lack of inter-linked library systems. Thus, this study determined the development direction of the textbook specialized library through the process of literature analysis, case studies, and reflection of expert opinions. In this study, a long-term policy direction of the building and operating of textbook specialized libraries has been proposed as follows: organizing and operating a textbook specialized library, collecting and creating a list of textbook-related information resources, creating information strategy, and constructing specialized content for the textbook specialized library.

  • In the knowledge society the main resource is knowledge, and the role of library to manage knowledge and information is very important. Therefore it is necessary to knowledge and information management that provides on demand service to user. The purpose of this research is to design model for web-based help-desk knowledge management system. This study used Qualitative methods as interviews and surveys through BBS and e-mail on information service in the university libraries. Here the investigated component factors are followings Q/A service user's education service to use the library, user's online reference service, e-mail service, FAQ service electronic service(BBS), lecture and research service for faculty, my library, SDI service, and open data service.   • This study is aimed to suggest the core elements of instruction and development program through understanding the generation Y's characteristics and examining the standards and education models for information literacy. Concretely, this paper is comparatively analyze and customize the successful online information literacy tutorial models adopted by university libraries in U.S.A, Japan, and Korea. As a result of research, the outline of the needed procedure and required contents for the improvement of the online tutorial in the university of our country are suggested.

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the historical changes of information literacy instruction in Japanese school libraries and in-depth research into recent educational situations. Related literature researches, the publication of School Library Association, The Courses of Study have been reviewed in this paper. As results of this research, information literacy education in Japanese school library has been developed from introductory period of the library use guidance after late 1940's, seek period of teaching method development after late 1950's, establishment period of information literacy instruction after 1980's, and enlargement period of inquiry based learning after 2000's.

A Research on Applying Copyright Laws and Response Strategies for Academic Libraries (저작권법의 적용과 대학도서관의 대응 전략에 관한 고찰)

  • The purpose of this study is to seek sustainable development plans in which academic libraries comply with copyright laws without withdrawing their information services by focusing on the changes of the relevant regulations since 2000 when copyright laws were revised. The study deals with the followings in detail. First, the issues with library information services is examined, owing to the enactment, revision, and execution of copyright laws. Second, the histories of enacting and amending copyright laws related to libraries are considered. Third, various opinions and response measures as to applying the copyright laws to libraries are analyzed. Forth, based on the previous analysis, the study suggests response strategies that academic libraries accept for copyright laws and keep improving library information services.
