Hexagonal Material Flow Pattern for Next Generation Semiconductor Fabrication (차세대 반도체 펩을 위한 육각형 물류 구조의 설계)

  • The semiconductor industry is highly capital and technology intensive. Technology advancement on circuit design and process improvement requires chip makers continuously to invest a new fabrication facility that costs more than 3 billion US dollars. Especially major semiconductor companies recently started to discuss 450mm fabrication substituting existing 300mm fabrication of which facilities were initiated to build in 1998. If the plan is consolidated, the yield of 450mm facility would be more than doubled compared to existing 300mm facility. In steps of this important investment, facility layout has been acknowledged as one of the most important factors to be competitive in the market. This research proposes a new concept of semiconductor facility layout using hexagonal floor plan and its compatible material flow pattern. The main objective of this proposal is to improve the productivity of the unified layout that has been popularly used to build existing facilities. In this research, practical characteristics of the semiconductor fabrication are taken into account to develop a new layout alternative based on the analysis of Chung and Tanchoco (2009). The performance of the proposed layout alternative is analyzed using computer simulation and the results show that the new layout alternative outperforms the existing layout alternative, unified layout. However, a few questions on space efficiency to the new alternative were raised in communication with industry practitioners. These questions are left for a future study.

Improvement of the Facilities Layout Using FactoryCAD in a Registry Department of Mail Center (FactoryCAD를 이용한 우편집중국 등기 작업장 설비 배치 개선)

  • In the future, the sorting machines will be taken charge of the most part of the letter sorting operations. At present, in order to deliver the sorted letters by the next day, many labors are intensively committed in the letter sorting operations. This research analyzes the problem of the facilities layout in registry department of mail center. It presents an improved design of facilities layout in comparison with several alternatives including the current layout using AutoCAD and FactoryCAD. It presents the optimized facilities layout using the algorithm which is embedded in the FactoryOPT. By the result of this research, we expect that the productivity of sorting letter will be improved and the related total labor cost will be minimized.

A Fuzzy Set Theoretic Approach for the Multigoal Plant Layout Planning

  • This paper presents a fuzzy set theory based formulation and heuristic which will allow plant layout problems to be solved for more than two input goals with different weights. The heuristic combines a construction and improvement procedure to generate a good layout from the formulation. To test the effectiveness of the heuristic, a set of examples previously used by various authors is solved and the results are compared to those from other known heuristics. The comparison indicates that the proposed method performs well for each of seventeen classical test problems.

  • The most effective computer algorithms for facility layout that have been found are mainly based on the improvement heuristic such as CRAFT. In this paper, we present a new algorithm which is based on the Kohonen neual network. The algorithm firstly forms a self-organizing feature map where the most important similarity relationships among the facilities are converted into their spatial relationships. A layout is then obtained by a minor adjustment to the map. Some simulation results are given to show the performance of the algorithm.

  • Weight of the factors to be considered in layout development with improvement-type heuristics is discussed in this paper. Determination of weight is especially important if it is designed to be used with an improvement-type heuristic. It is same as the value of variable coefficients in a multi-objective function as well as indices for departmental switching orders in the heuristic. Various weights are examined through computer simulation to verify whether the numerical values collected from machinery industries can be used as weights. And then a method to be used for searching an optimum or optimum-tending layout for machinery industries is presented using the weight.

  • This paper describes a new gate array layout system, HAN-LACAD-G(HANyang LAyout CAD system for Gate array). HAN-LACAD-G is composed of placer, global router, detailed router, and output processor. In placement design, initial placement is performed by repetitive clustering and min-cut partitioning followed by placement improvement using the concept of pairwise interchange. In global routing phase, pins are assigned in each channel considering the routing congestion estimation and overflows in feedthroughs are restricted. For the detailed routing, we use layer and three layer channel routing techniques. Layout results are displayed graphically and modified interactively by the user using the layout editor.

  • Construction robotics is rapidly forming a market in conjunction with the development of sensing and artificial intelligence technologies. The layout work for accurately constructing the shape and dimensions of the building frame requires high accuracy and precision, and is one of the high demands for productivity and quality improvement through construction automation. Thus, as a preliminary study, we derived the elemental factors and performance requirements for developing an automated layout robot. In addition, alternatives on driving and marking units were investigated based on literature review and practioner's interview. The result of this study will be used as a basic data for the layout robot design.

Improvement of usability of the refrigerator through behavioral analysis (사용행태 분석에 의한 냉장고 사용편의성 개선)

  • On the assumption that the layout of refrigerator for domestic market does not match with the eating habits of the Korean, this study suggests a way of improvement for usability of the refrigerator by re-arranging layout of inner shelves through behavioral analysis with the video ethnography. On the result of analysis, it can be found that the layout of inner shelves of the most refrigerators differs from the habits of cooking and preparing meals of Korean food, so the author propose a new layout to exchange the usage of the 3rd shelf with the vegetable box of the bottom level. It can be effective method to improve the usability by assigning appropriate usage for each shelf. To extract internal design factors of product, which is related to the specific living habits such as a refrigerator, understanding of user behavior must be accomplished at the first stage. The author found that the analysis of user behavior using the video ethnography is useful for this purpose, because it can be used to explore unpredictable design factors from user's real life.
