반도체 레이저 다이오드의 횡방향 1차모드의 특성 해석 (An analysis of the lateral first-order mode characteristics for the semiconductor laser diodes)

  • This paper represents the lateral first-order mode characteristics for the semiconductor laser diodes using a two-dimensional numerical simulator. In order to analyze the lateral first-order mode characteristics, Helmholtz wave equation is solved twice for the lateral fundamental and the first-order mode considering the mode gain, total losses, and the recombination rate due to the stimulated emission radiation for the each mode independantly. Through this procedure, we find that the lateral first-order mode was easily guided as increasing the stripe width for the index-guiding structures, and that the lateral first-order mode seems to be dominated in the distribution of total light intensity when its output power reaches nearly half of that of the lateral fundamental mode. This results may be used to design the device structure which guides only the lateral fundamental mode.

  • 850 nm 대역의 발진 파장을 갖는 GaAs/AlGaAs 다중양자우물 레이저 다이오드의 lateral-mode 특성과 이 특성이 출력 광파워 kink에 미치는 영향을 조사하였다. 이를 위해 전기적-열적-광학적 시뮬레이션을 self-consistent하게 수행하고, 제작된 레이저 다이오드 소자들을 측정하였다. 연구 결과를 바탕으로 높은 출력 파워에서도 single lateral-mode를 유지해서 좋은 beam quality를 유지할 수 있는 최적의 P-cladding 두께를 결정하였다.

  • Applying a general coupled lateral and torsional vibration finite element model of gear pair element this paper intends to look into in detail the coupled lateral and torsional vibration characteristics in a turbo-chiller rotor bearing system, having a bull-pinion speed increasing gear. Investigations have been carried out systematically by comparing the uncoupled and coupled analyses natural vibration frequencies and their mode shapes upon varying the gear mesh stiffness, and also by comparing the strain energies of lateral and torsional vibration modes. Results have shown that some modes may have coupled lateral and torsional mode characteristics as the gear mesh stiffness increases over a certain value, and moreover that their associated dominant modes may be different from their initial modes, i.e., the dominant mode changes from an initial torsional one to a lateral one or from an initial lateral one to a torsional one.

  • The purpose of study is to propose numerical assessment methods of lateral deformation shape under lateral loads for regular high-rise buildings. The normalized 1st mode shape is used to assess lateral deformation shape. The assessment method are mass participation factor, representative value by RMS, the mean value, median of the nomalized 1st mode shape. These methods are able to know a fundamental lateral deformation shape of the building and effects of interactive systems numerically. Generally the characteristics of normalized 1st mode shape for various models coincide with numerical assessment results.

광도파로의 곡률 반경에 따른 모드특성과 Lateral Offset 변화 (Improved method of lateral offset calculation for optical waveguide)

  • 곡선형 광도파로의 곡률반경이 작아짐에 따라 도파모드와 전파상수의 변화가 심화되므로 이종도파로 접합부에서의 모드 부정합이 손실을 유발하는 문제가 심각해졌다. 따라서, 곡률반경 변화에 따른 도파로의 모드 부정합을 극소화하기 위하여 이종 도파로간 lateral offset 이 제안되어 이의 계산이 여러 가지 방법으로 수행되어 왔는데, 본 논문에서는 유효 굴절률법(Effective index method)을 활용하고, Airy 함수로 주어지는 해석적 함수해의 분석을 통하여 곡률반경에 따른 전파모드의 특성변화와 lateral offset 거리의 변화를 분석하였다. 1/V=0.7인 특정조건을 경계로 모드분포의 특성이 바뀌며, 기존의 Gaussian 분석법에 의한 계산결과는 35%까지도 오차가 증대될 수 있음을 보였다. 새로이 오차보정상수(correction factor)η를 정의하여 기존 근사방식의 오차를 정량화하고, 간편히 도파로의 lateral offset을 설계 할 수 있도록 개선된 lateral offset 계산안을 제안하여 타당성을 보였다.

Lateral-torsional seismic behaviour of plan unsymmetric buildings

  • Torsional response of buildings is attributed to poor structural configurations in plan, which arises due to two factors - torsional eccentricity and torsional flexibility. Usually, building codes address effects due to the former. This study examines both of these effects. Buildings with torsional eccentricity (e.g., those with large eccentricity) and with torsional flexibility (those with torsional mode as a fundamental mode) demand large deformations of vertical elements resisting lateral loads, especially those along the building perimeter in plan. Lateral-torsional responses are studied of unsymmetrical buildings through elastic and inelastic analyses using idealised single-storey building models (with two degrees of freedom). Displacement demands on vertical elements distributed in plan are non-uniform and sensitive to characteristics of both structure and earthquake ground motion. Limits are proposed to mitigate lateral-torsional effects, which guides in proportioning vertical elements and restricts amplification of lateral displacement in them and to avoid torsional mode as the first mode. Nonlinear static and dynamic analyses of multi-storey buildings are used to validate the limits proposed.

  • The vibratory gyroscope can effectively measure the angular velocity as the oscillating and position-sensing mode are exactly tuned. The veering Phenomenon impedes the exact tuning, which is caused by the mode coupling of two modes. In this paper, the gyroscope's structure with two frames is introduced to minimize the veering phenomenon that destabilizes the tuning process of oscillating and position-sensing mode. Experimental results show that the Proposed structure can achieve the mode intersection without veering phenomenon.

Lateral Far-field Characteristics of Narrow-width 850 nm High Power GaAs/AlGaAs Laser Diodes

  • We investigate the lateral far-field pattern characteristics, including divergence angle change and far-field pattern analysis as output power increases, of narrow-emitter-width 850 nm GaAs/AlGaAs laser diodes (LDs). Each LD has a cavity of 1200 and 1500 ㎛ and narrow emitter width of 2.4 ㎛ for the top and 4.6 ㎛ for the bottom. The threshold currents are 35 and 40 mA, and L-I kinks appear at power levels of 326 and 403 mW, respectively. The divergence angle tends to increase due to the occurrence of first-order lateral mode and the thermal lensing effect. But with the L-I kink, the divergence angle decreases and the far-field pattern becomes asymmetric. This is due to coherent superposition between the fundamental and the first-order lateral mode. We provide detailed explanations for these observations based on high-power laser diode simulation results.

Buckling Characteristics of the KALIMER-150 Reactor Vessel Under Lateral Seismic Loads and the Experimental Verification Using Reduced Scale Cylindrical Shell Structures

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the buckling characteristics of a conceptually designed KALIMER-150(Korea Advanced LIquid MEtal Reactor, 150MWe) reactor vessel and verify the buckling behavior using the reduced scale cylindrical shell structures. To do this, nonlinear buckling analyses using finite element method and evaluation formulae are carried out. From the results, the KALIMER-150 reactor vessel exhibits a dominant bending buckling mode and is significantly affected by the plastic behavior. The interaction effects with the vertical seismic load cause the lateral buckling load to be slightly decrease. From the results of the buckling experiments using reduced scaled cylindrical shell structures, it is verified that the buckling modes such as pure bending, pure shear, and mixed(bending plus shear) mode clearly appear under a lateral load corresponding to the slenderness ratio of cylinder.
