  • The measurement accuracy of Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy based Tomography (TDLAST) for the temperature and concentration fields are dependant upon the arrangement method of the used laser beams. This paper reports on the optimization of laser beam arrangements using phantom data. It has been verified that the measurement error of the TDLAST decreased with increase of laser beam numbers. Further, it has been confirmed that perpendicular arrangements between the horizontal and the vertical laser beams without additional diagonal laser beams shows the minimum measurement errors.

  • Integrated cavity output spectroscopy(ICOS) is a simple, non-intrusive absorption measurement technique that can detect and quantify trace-level gas species. The spectral absorbance of a gas is quantified from the integrated optical output of the modulated high-finesse cavity containing the sample which is irradiated by a wavelength-swept laser source. We constructed an experimental setup by using a tunable single mode external cavity diode laser operating at the wavelength near 765 nm and a Fabry-Perot cavity with length modulation achieved by a piezoelectric transducer where one of the cavity mirrors sat on. In the experiment performed on minute oxygen gas at the wave-length near 764.5nm, we demonstrated the minimum detectable absorption of $8.45\times10^{-8}cm^{-1}$.

  • First observation of uranium using a diode laser was published recently. The experiment was performed by the optogalvanic spectroscopy using diode lasers. A laser source causes the current change in a hollow cathode discharge lamp when metal atoms in plasma absorb the diode laser light. The optogalvanic signal is collected by detecting the current change. This work is the extended investigation of our previous research, the uranium detection using a diode laser. New electronic transitions of uranium and thorium in 775∼850 nm were investigated using diode lasers. In addition, the Rb(Ⅰ) optogalvanic spectra at 780.02 nm and 794.76 nm were studied. The Rb(Ⅰ) spectrum at 780.02 nm showed the isotopic features and hyperfine splittings. This work provides a key idea that the diode lasers are useful in the specrochemical analysis of the radioactive actinides that have a rich spectrum with transitions which can be easily reached with AlGaAs diode lasers. Also, this study shows that the diode lasers can be an important tool to find the spectroscopic parameters of actinides and rare earth elements which have not known.

  • A laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) measurement was carried out to derive an optimized measurement condition with a high reproducibility and to grow a plasma sphere to 20 mm high under a 600 mtorr vacuum in order to improve an accuracy of measurement. The measurement of the plasma was taken at a 6.0 mm distance, in the direction of a plasma sphere, from a sample. This location belongs to the outer sphere region in the plasma. The calibration curve of 'Ni' and 'Cu' was acquired by the signal intensity ratio and the atomic ratio for the samples, and linear regression of 'Cu' was $R^2$=0.9886, and the linear regression of 'Ni' was $R^2$=0.9988. The accuracy of LIBS was improved pre-existence as the measurement error of 'Ni' was 0.78%.

  • The CO laser is one of powerful light source for laser magnetic resonance spectroscopy in the mid-infrared region of the spectrum because of its wideband operational characteristics. In this work, a liquid nitrogen cooled cw CO laser is developed to allow broad-band operation from 5 to 8 ${\mu}m$. The design details will be presented.

  • The laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) has been used for rapid detection of elemental compositions of various materials in multi-media (solid, liquid, gas, and aerosols). In this study, the aerosol-LIBS has been developed for real-time monitoring of process-induced particles produced during the semiconductor manufacturing. The developed aerosol-LIBS mainly consists of laser, optics, spectrometer, and aerosol chamber. A new aerosol chamber was constructed for the aerosol-LIBS to be applied for various semiconductor manufacturing process, including exhaust tubes, and low pressure and high temperature chamber. The aerosol-LIBS was evaluated by using laboratory generated aerosols for detection of various elements. As a result, P, Fe, Mg, Cu, Co, Ni, Ca, Na, and K emission lines were successfully detected by the aerosol-LIBS. Further evaluation of the aerosol-LIBS is being conducted.

  • Laser Raman spectroscopy is one of the most powerful technologies for standoff detection of hazardous materials including explosives. Supported by recent development of laser and sensitive ICCD camera, the technology can identify trace amount of unknown substances in a distance. Using this concept, we built a standoff detection system, in which nanosecond pulse laser and nanosecond gating ICCD technique were delicately devised to avoid the large background noise which suppressed weak Raman signals from the target sample. In standoff detection of explosives which have large kill radius, one of the most important technical issues is the detection distance from the target. Hence, we focused to increase the detection distance up to 54 m by careful optimization of optics and laser settings. The Raman spectra of hazardous materials observed at the distance of 54 m were fully identifiable. We succeeded to detect and identify eleven hazardous materials of liquid or solid particles, which were either explosives or chemical substances used frequently in chemical plants. We also performed experiments to establish the limit of detection (LOD) of HMX at 10 m, which was estimated to be 6 mg.

  • We performed the velocity selective optical pumping(VSOP) spectroscopy using the rubidium atomic vapor in the room temperature. This spectroscopic technique removes the Doppler broadening by both optical pumping effect and the selection of atoms with a particular velocity. In this experiment, we used two independent lasers; one was a locked laser whose frequency was fixed and the other was a sweep laser whose frequency was tunable. The two beams were passing through the sample in the same direction unlike the conventional VSOP spectroscopy using two counter-propagating beams. We could make the velocity selective range of atoms much wider with this method than the old one.

  • A procedure was developed for preparing bulk carbon nitride crystals from a polymeric $\alpha$ -C$_3$N$\_$4.2/ at high pressure and temperature in the presence of seeds of crystalline carbon nitride films prepared by a high voltage discharge plasma combined with pulsed laser ablation of graphite target. The samples were evaluated by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), infrared (IR) spectroscopy, Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), secondary-ion mass spectrometry (SIMS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and x-ray diffraction (XRD). Notably, XPS studies of the film composition before and after thermobaric treatments demonstrate that the nitrogen composition in $\alpha$ -C$_3$N$\_$4.2/ material initially containing more than 58% nitrogen decreases during the annealing process and reaches a common, stable composition of ~45%. The thermobaric experiments were performed at 10-77 kbar and 350-1200 $\^{C}$.
