In order to improve productivity of large container ship construction, large heat input and/or high productive welding technologies are necessary. This can be achieved by the joint research and cooperation among steel maker, welding consumable company, welding equipment company and ship yards. Two electrodes SAW process is effective the plate butt welding and partial joint welding, while FGB welding process is for the connection of block to block joint. The higher strength and thicker steel is developed, the more reliable welding procedure such as two electrodes EGW including light weight welding equipment should be developed.

Recently, it has been reported that the whipping response, which is the elastic phenomenon of the ship, may be one of the causes of the ship accident. Unfortunately, the commonly used methodology for evaluating the whipping effect effectively has not been developed yet. In this study, we developed a procedure to estimate the whipping effect of hull in actual design stage. Fluid-structure interaction analysis was performed for a dominant short term sea state to obtain the time series data of vertical wave bending moment including the whipping response by slamming. In order to estimate the whipping effect by using the time series, some signal processing and statistical techniques such as low pass filtering, Weibull fitting and so on, were applied. the hydro-elasticity analysis was performed on container ships of various sizes to evaluate the whipping effect. The parameters that can affect the response of the hull vibration was selected and the effect of these parameters on whipping was analyzed.

A study on the green ship design for Ultra Large Container Ship (ULCS, 18,000 TEU Class Container Ship) was performed based on the four step procedures of the initial design and hull form optimization to maximize economic and propulsive performance. The first, the design procedure for ULCS was surveyed with economic evaluation considering environmental rules and regulations. The second, the characteristics of single and twin skeg container ships were investigated in view of initial design and performances. The third, the hull form optimization for single and twin skeg ships with the same dimensions was conducted to improve the resistance and propulsive performances at design draught and speed by several variations and the results of the optimization were verified by numerical calculations of CFD and model test. The last, for the estimated operating profile of draught and speed, the hull forms of single and twin sked ships were optimized by CFD. From this study, the methodologies to optimize the hull form of ULCS were proposed with considerations during the green ship design and the improvement of the energy efficiency for the optimized hull forms was confirmed by the proposed formula of the total energy considering design conditions, operating profile and fuel oil consumption.

Today international trade through maritime transportation is significantly increasing. Due to this increase, shipping companies are faced with problems concerning the repositioning of empty containers from import dominant ports. The liner shipping service network has been provided to transport containers which load customers' freights. Container ships are moved on the liner shipping service network by observing the predetermined route and transportation time. This research deals with the empty containers distribution problem considering the container ship route. A mathematical model based on the mixed integer program has been introduced in this study. The objective is to minimize the total relevant costs of empty containers such as handling, leasing, and inventory holding, etc. Due to the complexity of the problem, a genetic algorithm has been suggested to solve large sized problems within a reasonable time. Numerical experiments have been conducted to show the efficiency of the genetic algorithm.

Recently, container vessels are required to be applied various technologies to improve ship life-cycle and operating efficiency for the cost decreasing of logistics. The degradation of engine efficiency due to the increasing capacity of the ship and the related equipment of facilities are applied to large-scale ships without considering the condition of ship operation by increasing the ship size and feature. In this paper, the flow analysis is performed with existing gas pipe in large-scale container ship with the operation-condition of higher capacity engine and facilities, and the results were used on the new gas pipe design for ULCS (Ultra Large Container Ship). The newly designed gas pipe can be expected to increase the operating efficiency of ULCS.

Transportation provides an infrastructure vital to economic growth, and it is also an integral part of production. As a port is regarded as the interface between the maritime transport and domestic transport sectors, it certainly play a key role in any economic development. Ship's delay caused by port congestion has recently has recently attracted attended with the analysis of overall operation in port. In order to analyse complicated port operation which contains large number of variable factors, queueing theory is needed to be adopted, which is applicable to a large scale transportation system in chiding ship's delay in Inchon port in relation to ship's delay problem. The overall findings are as follows ; 1. The stucture of queueing model in this port can be represented as a complex of multi-channel single-phase 2. Ship's arrival and service pattern were Poisson Input Erlangian Service. 3. The suitable formula to calculate the mean delay in this port, namely, $W_q={\frac{{\rho}}{{\lambda}(1-{\rho})}}{\frac{e{\small{N}}({\rho}{\cdot}N)}{D_{N-1}({\rho}{\cdot}N)}}$ Where, ${\lambda}$ : mean arrival rate ${\mu}$ : mean servicing rate N : number of servicing channel ${\rho}$ : utilization rate (l/Nm) $e{\small{N}}$ : the Poisson function $D_{(n-1)}$ : a function of the cumulative Poisson function 4. The utility rate is 95.0 percents in general piers, 75.39 percents in container piers, and watiting time 28.43 hours in general piers, 13.67 hours in container piers, and the length of queue is 6.17 ships in general piers, 0.93 ships in container piers, and the ship turnaround time is 107.03 hours in general piers, 51.93 hours in container piers.

Efficient stowage plan is required for handling large number of containers in a container terminal. Before a ship enters port, most of container terminals prepare a stowage plan based on information received from the shipping company. If this information does not have the accurate information of containers in the vessel, the stowage plan might be often changed or sometimes it becomes useless. In order to avoid this problem, we apply RFID system in the container ship and we propose a framework for communication between ships and terminals using RFID and Web Services technology.

To provide more rational design solutions at conceptual design level, axiomatic design method has been applied to solve critical part of a new engineering problem called Mobile Harbor. In the implementation, the Mobile Harbor, a functional harbor system that consists of a vessel with container crane approaches to a container ship anchored in the open sea and establishes a secure mooring between the two vessels to carry out loading and unloading of containers. For this moving harbor system to be able to operate successfully, a reliable and safe strategy to moor and maintain constant distance between the two vessels in winds and waves is required. The design process of automatic ship-to-ship mooring system to satisfy the requirements of establishing and maintaining secure mooring has been managed using axiomatic design principles. Properly defining and disseminating Functional Requirements, clarifying interface requirements between its subsystems, and identifying potential conflict, i.e. functional coupling, at the earliest stage of design as much as possible are all part of what need to be managed in a system design project. In this paper, we discuss the automatic docking system design project under the umbrella of KAIST mobile harbor project to illustrate how the Axiomatic Design process can facilitate design projects for a large and complex engineering system. The solidified design is presented as a result.
Recently, since there are several problems in space, the infra-structure and the facilities in the contiguity of the existing harbors due to the trend of enlarging the container capacity of the large container vessel, a special floating platform named as the Mobile Harbor has been proposed conceptually as an effective solution of those problems. Two kinds of hull shapes, a conventional mono-hull type and a catamaran type, are proposed as midway feeders to transfer containers to the harbor on land from a large container ship on near shore. In this study, the motion response and mooring analysis are carried out for comparing the global performance of two types of Mobile Harbor. Robot arm mooring facility specially is devised and newly tried to use for the safe fixation of a large container ship and the Mobile Harbor on near shore. It would be expected for this comparison study to give a guideline to design the efficient hull form for a midway loader.

Recent economic trends are worsening and becoming longer, and Korean shipbuilding is focused on high value added and high technology, especially for LNG carriers and large container ships. Both ship types increased in size in the 2010s but have requirements such as high strength, toughness at low temperatures and continuous weldability for preventing brittle fractures at service temperatures. In particular, as container ships become larger, the International Classification Society (IACS) has established a provision (IACS UR S33) that mandates the use of BCA (Brittle Crack Arrest) certified vessels for large container vessels contracted after 2014 to ensure safety. Therefore, studies on BCA 47Y.P are currently being undertaken, but BCA 40Y.P has not been actively studied yet. We will test BCA 40Y.P to verify why it can be applied to a large container ship and measure fatigue cracking.
