Rural areas dominate country landscape, where the population is rich in traditional and natural heritage. Dangsan forests and Rural community forests (RCF) have been maintained by local residents for hundreds of years. However, many of these forests have been disturbed, and only small amount of Dangsan forests and the RCF remain due to the efforts of local residents. Recently, the remnants of Dangsan forests and RCF have been regarded as living traditional landscapes representing the cultural and rural background of Korea. But the value of Dangsan forests and the RCFs has not been recognized by many. This study aims to understand the characteristics and management status of Dangsan forests in Sungnam-ri, Wonju. Sungnam-ri has four villages, each of which is bordered by a Dangsan forest at the riparian buffer. Sungnam-ri has been selsected as a site for a rural village development project by the Ministry of Agriculture & Forestry of Korea. Sunghwanglim (the Upper Dangsan forest) is designated as Natural Monument No.93 and entrance is limited in this area. The size of Sunghwanglim is $21,133m^2$, and the major tree species are Kalopanax pictus (Dangsan tree, Divine tree), Pinus densiflora, Abies holophylla, Acer triflorum, Ulmus davidiana, Fraxinus rhynchophylla and Quercus serrata. In total, 124 trees with more than 40 cm in DBH are at this site. As for cultural activities, the Dangsan festival is held on April 8th and September 9th of the lunar calendar at shrines in the forests. Although other Dangsan forests are smaller than Sunghwanglim, they also have similar cultural activities. The landscape of the Dangsan forests have been managed for several hundred years by the local people, and they intend to continue maintaining the Dangsan forests for the purpose of festivals and other cultural activities. The findings in this study suggest that Dangsan forests have the potential for the development of rural villages and for the improvement of cultural and natural landscapes in Korea.

This study was executed to investigate the vegetation structure and to propose the administration planning of the Royal Ancestor's Shrine. Five sites sampled in the study area with the clumped sampling method. Pinus koraiensis community covered 27.3% and Quercus aliena community 61.5% of total forest area when considering the actual vegetation. This area of environmental impact grade 3 and 4 area covered 46.9% and it should be restored. The ecological diversity, i.e. species diversity and evenness, showed low class, and especially site 2 which was controlled the user's after 1985 showed the lowest value. Pinus koraiensis community which is a dominant species now in the study area shall be succeed to Quercus aliena community. Robinia pseudoacacia at the eastern wall shall be excluded step by step and it shall be replaced with native species gradually. Ailanthus altissima, Populus ${\times}$ albaglandulosa and Styrax japonica which had higher selection invaded conspicuously the bare land. As the administration planning of the study area, Pinus koraiensis and Styrax japonica shall be thinned out gradually and it shall be replaced with Quercus aliena and Acer palmatum.

Broad bean wilt virus 2 (BBWV2), genus Fabavirus, subfamily Comovirinae, family Secoviridae, causes damage in many economically important horticultural and ornamental crops. Sequence alignments showed several conserved sequences in 5' non-coding regions (5' NCRs) of RNA 1 and RNA 2 in all BBWV2 strains characterized so far. Based on this observation, we generated a hpRNA construct (pIR-BBWV2) harboring an inverted repeat containing a 210 bp cDNA fragment homologous to 5' NCR portion of BBWV2 RNA 1 to investigate the silencing potential for its ability to interfere with a rapidly replicating BBWV2. Agrobacterium-mediated transient expression of the IR-BBWV2 had a detrimental effect on BBWV2 infection, showing no distinct symptoms in non-inoculated leaves of the agroinfiltrated Nicotiana benthamiana plants. BBWV2 genomic RNAs were not detected by RT-PCR from tissues of both the inoculated leaves and upper leaves of the agroinfiltrated plants. Accumulation of virus-derived small interfering RNAs was detected in the inoculated leaf tissues of N. benthamiana plants elicited by transient expression of IR-BBWV2 indicating that RNA silencing is responsible for the resistance to BBWV2.

There is a clear need to enhance the attractiveness of rural areas by leveraging their core assets to respond to emerging mega-trends. This paper analyzes the progress of the direct payment program that has been implemented to preserve agricultural landscapes in rural areas, using spatial information data. The study identified the planting characteristics of landscape crops, spatial utilization characteristics of the system, and utilization characteristics of the system by the beneficiaries. According to the analysis, the spatial utilization characteristics of the system could be classified into eight types: tourism resources and nearby agricultural areas, designation across the entire rural area, agricultural areas around villages, large-scale agricultural areas, small-scale agricultural areas, scattered and dispersed areas, independent parcels of land, and ranches. Based on the characteristics and limitations of the landscape preservation direct payment system, this study provides directions for future rural specialized zones. The landscape preservation direct payment system focuses on income support for farmers and providing agricultural benefits in terms of public interest. Meanwhile, the landscape agricultural zone serves as a rural specialized zone, highlighting the need to explore the direction of integrated rural landscape management. It is important for farmers, as the key stakeholders, to preserve the agricultural landscape in rural areas. Forming community-level cooperatives and engaging in relevant activities are crucial for achieving this goal. In order to actively preserve the agricultural landscape, it is necessary to consider the resumption of financial support for village landscape preservation activities, along with the designation of landscape agricultural zones. There is a need to conduct a specific review and explore measures to accommodate the designated landscape complexes at the local government level. The higher the ratio of designated landscape complexes, the more agricultural landscape management based on public value has been carried out. The designation of such landscape complexes can be seen as a demand for voluntary utilization of agricultural landscapes in the region. Moreover, as the ratio of designated landscape complexes increases, it becomes evident that farmers at the village level actively participate in agricultural landscape preservation and contribute to providing public value or utilize it as a tourism resource. This highlights the need for managing agricultural landscapes at the village level within the appropriate context.

This paper aims to discussion the characteristics of location and spatial organization on Hongneung and Yureung(royal tomb) in Namyangju through the interpretation of traditional oriental philosophy including Feng-Shui theory. To do this, we studied in two ways; analysis of the present conditions and photographing research materials about the form of physical structure and review of historical document. The result of analysis in sight of the location and spatial structure was good matched. Main finding of this paper are as follows: The location and landscape structure was characterized by the harmony with natural following traditional thinking and the Korean view of nature, while maintaining the dignity of the King. The spatial organization were placed in a straight line following the hierarchy of metaphysics by order of Neungchim(Tombs Vicinity) - Changmyungdeung(Stone Lantern) - Chungjakak(Pavilion) - Hongsalmun(Gate for Heavenly Gods) and was based on the Confucianism value, the natural contour and inner value. Through this study, we find the principles made it possibles to re-evaluate nature in modem society and provided us with new ways to conserve nature with the help of environmental theory.

This study is to introduce the improvement and management of Ecoduct located in Uiwang's Mt. Obong, Gyeonggi province. The inner planting of Ecoduct is not very related to the flora of mountain areas nearby. The difference in the index of plant crown volume(GVZ), the similarity index(S.I.), and monitored animals is significant between Ecoduct and mountain areas. Putting together all of the results, the initial selection of movement and target species is excessive in number. Target species must be selected again. They will be species that are currently found on the site. The Ecoduct space must be divided into two parts: buffer planting space and wildlife corridor. Reforestation is needed since the GVZ is remarkably lower in Ecoduct than in the nearby mountain areas. Besides the vegetation of Ecoduct is densely planted in guidance planting space to connect the southern Quercus mongolica community and the northern Quercus acutissima community. Proper upkeep after construction should be continuously conducted to maintain the procedure of natural change.

This study has been conducted in order to better understand a concrete and evidential disagreement that resulted from a conflict caused by the exploitation of folk village for tourism purposes. The purpose of this study was to analyze more realistically the phenomenon of the disagreement that originated from sightseeing in the hahoe folk villages by focusing on the problem between the ive groups as a potential and continual impediment to tourism. Two groups, residents and tourists, were compared in order to determine the underlying factors of the disagreement regarding exploitation of folk villages for tourism The two groups were clearly split: inhabitants of the village considered such exploitation negative, while tourists accepted it as positive. The two groups showed different understandings of the topic residents were in favor of the preservation of the physical resources, but against exposure of their private lives to the public, while tourists strongly respected the preservation of the resources of the village. A comparison of the common phenomena of disagreement between the two groups was performed, Variables that showed different responses between the two groups were loss of privacy of individual houses, verbal aggression and physical conflicts between the groups, and lack of administration. In most of the cases of disagreement, residents considered the disagreement phenomena to be more serious than tourists did except in one case: tourists placed a greater importance on the ugly view of the street market. Finally, in order to analyze the factors that impacted the level of the disagreement, a multiple regression analysis was conducted. Disagreement factors affecting tourists were verbal aggression between the groups, complaints about lodging and dining facilities, complaints about tourist facilities, and negligence of the administration in responding to requests. Among these, the most influential factor was verbal aggression between the groups. In fact, individual feelings between tourists and residents proved to be the biggest influence on the level of disagreement.
To this day, conflicts have intensified between managers who want to preserve biosphere reserves and citizen who want to develop them. Based on this problem, this study seeks to investigate the establishment of a forum for communication between various stakeholders and to promote the economic development of local communities while preserving biodiversity. First, in terms of conservation, the results indicated that Gyeonggi Province and Namyangju City highly valued direct conservation activities in biosphere reserves, whereas Pocheon and Uijeongbu City highly valued indirect conservation functions through management or monitoring. Second, in terms of development, it was found that there were differences in the roles, perceptions and responsibilities with respect to biosphere reserves among the different layers of government: the central government agency, the Cultural Heritage Administration, the metropolitan government, Gyeonggi-do, and the local governments, Pocheon, Namyangju, and Uijeongbu. Third, in terms of logistical support, which serves as a function for communication and practical participation among management entities, the results suggested that it was necessary to establish a comprehensive decision-making organization for efficient management and operation and to provide opportunities for active participation. The study can be utilized as a basic reference for developing efficient communication by management entities in protected areas with similar challenges.

This study is designed to examine characteristics and types of basic landscape design established by 7 local governments in Jeollanam-do and its availability as the index of landscape administration and present a guideline with view landscape plan of local governments. The results of this study are described below. In case of view landscape, while Korean cities have not many historical assets like landmark, they have locational characteristics with mountain or coast in the center or surroundings of downtown. Therefore, since view landscape has many cases of restricting individual property rights as well as having a value as public property of city which makes recognition of sharing city, it is very sensitive problem and establishing guideline of it is needed. But, it was found that view landscape plan of local governments established location of view spot with the nature of relief viewing downtown or coast from high spot. Selection of viewing objects in view plan require deciding an object as the public property of city and big cities require selection from the zone and small cities must select 1~2 spots from the viewpoint of whole downtown. 3~4 view spots of middle and distant views which makes city community centering around the subject of view must be selected through enough discussion and in case of natural landscape, View shaft or visible rays require setting of range that 30% of viewing objects is seen. View spot or viewing objects should be selected over twice as extra spots through public hearing and civil participation as the process.

This landscape design proposal was presented to a design competition for the New Government Buildings of Dalseong-gun which was held by the municipal authority of Dalseong-gun in June, 2002. The site is located at 1313 Gumpo-ri, Nongong-eup, Dalseong-gun, Daegu Metropolitan City and has an area of 50,000$m^2$. The judging criteria for the landscape design set by the Dalseong-gun could be articulated as follows : an environmentally friendly design which respects the surrounding n a locale which functions as a community center of Dalseong-gun, a resting place for the welfare of its employees and visitors, and finally a place with diverse landscape elements reflecting the individual identity of each facility. The main design concepts of this project could be summarized as follows : an environmentally friendly design which respects and utilizes the existing natural landscape resources, a design which features a harmony of nature with architecture and exterior space with interior space, and a design which balances esthetic form and practical function. This design consists of four major outdoor spaces ; the lawn, the entry plaza, a pine grove, and a deck area on the third floor. The multi-purpose lawn area near the main entrance area can be used for flea markets, outdoor weddings, and picnics for its neighbors. The adjacent plaza and parking lots can be unified as one space in case of large events. The entry plaza has three axes. Each of them represents the Assembly, the Administration, and the Culture. A big circle in the paving pattern unifies the three individual axes. A group of Zelkova trees was introduced to reflect local flavor. The existing pine grove was preserved as a symbolic 'park' for the Gumpo district. The outdoor amphitheatre within the grove was introduced by utilizing the existing topography, The flow of 'nature'on the deck area was designed to connect Mt. Gumkae with the 'city'. It is a comfortable resting place for its employees and visitors.
