Various sterols and uncommon fatty acids have been isolated from the three species of Korean marine sponges. Odd-numbered pentadecanoic, heptadecanoic methyl ester and branched 12-methyltetradecanoic, 14-methylpentadecanoic, 15-methylhexadecanoic and 14-methylhexadecanoic methyl ester were isolated along with common tetradecanoic and hexadecanoic methyl ester from Heteropiidae sponge Vosmaeropsis japonica Hozawa collected from Sohuksan island of the Korea sea. Futher elution with more polar solvent gave 5${\alpha}$-cholestan-3${\beta}$-ol along with minor amount of ergost-25-ene-3${\beta}$,5${\alpha}$,6${\beta}$-triol. On the other hand, marine sponge Hymeniacidon sinapium collected from Yesu Dolsan island of the Korea sea was shown to contain 5${\alpha}$-cholestan-3${\beta}$-ol, along with minor amount of cholesterol, palmitic, palmitoleic, oleic, stearic, linolenic, and arachidonic acid ethyl ester. Unknown marin sponge collected from the same region was shown to contain large amount of tetradecanoic tetradecyl and hexadecyl ester and cholesteryl acetic and fatty acid ester.

In a continuation of our studies to discover bioactive secondary metabolites from marine sources, we further investigated samples from a tryptamine and phenyl-alkane producing sponge, which resulted in the isolation of four uncommon small molecules and five nucleosides. Their structures were determined to be 7,8-dihydroimidazo[1,5-c]pyrimidin-5(6H)-one (1), 5-chlorocavernicolin (2), maleimide-5-oxime (3), 3-methylmaleimide-5-oxime (4), uridine (5), 2'-deoxyuridine (6), thymidine (7), adenine (8), and adenosine (9) by spectroscopic analyses. The isolated compounds were evaluated for inhibitory activity against soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH) as well as the Wnt/${\beta}$-catenine signaling pathway.
Two new cyclic peroxides were isolated from an undescribed sponge of the genus Plakortis sp. collected at Discovery Bay, Jamaica. The molecular structures were elucidated by interpreting ID and 2D NMR and HRMS data. The cyclic peroxides, Compound 1 and 2, exhibited significant antimicrobial activity against pathogenic bacteria and fungi with IC$_${50} values of 0.9-5.0$\mug/mL and 0.7-8.0$\mug/mL, respectively.
To investigate the relationship of wheat single kernel characteristics with end-use properties, 183 soft wheat cultivars and lines were evaluated for milling quality characteristics (kernel hardness, kernel and flour protein, flour ash), and end-use properties (i.e., as ingredients in sugar-snap cookies, sponge cake). Significant positive correlations occurred among wheat hardness parameters including near-infrared reflectance (NIR) score and single kernel characterization system (SKCS). The SKCS characteristics were also significantly correlated with conventional wheat quality parameters such as kernel size, wheat protein content, and straight-grade flour yield. The cookie diameter and cake volume were negatively correlated with NIR and SKCS hardness, and there was an inverse relationship between flour protein contents and kernel weights or sizes. Sugar-snap cookie diameter was positively correlated with sponge cake volume.
Bioactivity-guided fractionation of MeOH extract of an association of two sponges, Jaspis sp. and Poecillastra sp. resulted in isolation of four apocarotenoids (1 - 4). Their structures were determined on the basis of MS and NMR spectroscopic analyses and by direct comparison with those of reported. This is the first report on isolation of these compounds from any sponge. Isolated metabolites were evaluated for cytotoxicity against a small panel of solid human tumor cell lines.
Titanium is the ninth most abundant element in the Earth's crust and is the fourth most abundant structural metal after aluminum, iron, and magnesium. It exhibits a higher specific strength than steel along with an excellent corrosion resistance, highlighting the promising potential of titanium as a structural metal. However, titanium is difficult to extract from its ore and is classified as a rare metal, despite its abundance. Therefore, the production of titanium is exceedingly low compared to that of common metals. Titanium is conventionally produced as a sponge by the Kroll process. For powder metallurgy (PM), hydrogenation-dehydrogenation (HDH) of the titanium sponge or gas atomization of the titanium bulk is required. Therefore, numerous studies have been conducted on smelting, which replaces the Kroll process and produces powder that can be used directly for PM. In this review, the Kroll process and new smelting technologies of titanium for PM, such as metallothermic, electrolytic, and hydrogen reduction of TiCl4 and TiO2 are discussed.
To assess the algicidal effect of a bacterium, Pseudomonas fluorescens HYK0210-SK09 (SK09), attached to activated carbon polyvinyl alcohol (ACPA) and cellulose sponge (CS) carriers against Stephanodiscus hantzschii, the present study was carried out in an indoor-microcosm. As comparing immobilization effects of two carriers, the ACPA carrier allowed for higher packing cell density of SK09 compared to the CS carrier. In the microcosm, immobilized SK09 cells were applied to control S. hantzschii blooms. Immobilized SK09 cells exhibited a species-specific activity towards the diatom, showing an algicidal effect up to 72% attached by ACPA carriers and to 51% attached by CS carriers. In particular, a level of conductivity treated with ACPA carriers was decreased than that of CS carriers. The present study clearly demonstrates that ACPA-immobilized SK09 cells could effectively control S. hantzschii blooms and improve water quality in the microcosm ecosystem.

Absorbable atelo-collagen sponge $TERUPLUG^{(R)}$, Termo Co. Tokyo, Japan) is inserted in the extraction wound where alveolar bone is exposed. It protects wounds and promotes the formation of granulation. This is made of atelo-collagen, to minimize antigenicity, which is cross-linked by heat treatment for biocompatibility. $TERUPLUG^{(R)}$ consists of between 85 and 95 % of collagen type I and between 5 to 15 % of collagen type III. The raw material for the collagen is derived from bovine skin. It features a sponge block design and is shaped for easy insertion in the extraction wound. This study was designed to find out the bone healing capacity of $TERUPLUG^{(R)}$. We implanted $TERUPLUG^{(R)}$ (experimental group I) and $TERUPLUG^{(R)}$ with rhBMP-2 (experimental group II) in the rabbit cranium defect and then histologically analysed the specimen. The results were as follows. 1. In the 4 weeks, a lot of the newly formed collagen fibers around material of the experimental group I implanted $TERUPLUG^{(R)}$ were observed. But, in the experimental group II implanted $TERUPLUG^{(R)}$ with rhBMP-2, a little of newly formed collagen fibers around material were observed. The cell proliferating activity and apoptosis of the experimental group I, II was positive in and around the implanted material. 2. In the 8 weeks, the amount of newly formed and matured bone in the experimental group II was more observed than the experimental group I and control group. The results of this study indicate that absorbable atelo-collagen sponge ($TERUPLUG^{(R)}$) is relatively favorable bone void filler with biocompatibility and has the better bone healing capacity in case of application with rhBMP-2.

[실험방법] Sample은 pure Ti 및 Ti-xNi(x=49.0, 51.1, 52.2, 52.5 at.%)를 이용하였다.
