A Comparative Analysis on the Development and Maladaptive Behavior at Daycare Centers by Children of Multicultural and Non-multicultural Family Background (다문화 아동과 일반 아동의 발달 및 어린이집 부적응행동 비교 분석)

  • In this study, WSS developmental checklist and nursery maladaptive test were conducted and applied to 203 multicultural children and non-multicultural children. The children were 3-5years old and were attending 34 kindergartens located in Gimpo-si and Ansan-si, Gyeonggi-do to investigate the developmental level and status of adaptation to the nursery in multicultural children. The result shows that there is no difference in the development of scientific thinking and mathematical thinking while developmental level is lower in personality, sociality, language, reading and writing area in multicultural children compared to non-multicultural children. According to age, there is no difference in the development between 4~5-year-old multicultural children and non-multicultural children while there is a difference in the development between 3-year-old multicultural and non-multicultural children. It also shows that there are no significant differences in nursery adaptation between multicultural children and non-multicultural children.

The Effect of a Group Program Using Theraplay on Prosocial Behavior of 2-year-old Infants and Process of Infants' Prosocial Behavior Change (치료놀이를 활용한 집단프로그램이 만 2세 영아의 친사회적 행동에 미치는 영향과 영아의 친사회적 행동 변화 과정)

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of a group program using theraplay on 2-year-olds' prosocial behavior. The changes of prosocial behavior in the process of program were also examined. Methods: Subjects were 12 infants who attended a child care center in W city. Subjects were attached to the experimental or control group. The experimental group participated in 11 group theraplay sessions twice a week. The adaptive social behavior inventory (Hogan et al., 1992) was used for pre and post tests. Wilcoxon rank-sum test was performed to verify the effectiveness of a group theraplay program. Every sessions was video-taped and recorded verbatim. The verbatim were analyzed using the Padgett (2001)'s qualitative data analysis method. Results: Infants who assigned to the experimental group demonstrated significant improvement in prosocial behavior. Their expressive behavior and compliant behavior gradually increased over the sessions. Conclusion/Implications: The present study showed that the use of group program utilizing theraplay was an effective strategy for improving prosocial behavior of 2-year-old infants.

  • The frequency of abnormality at birth is average 1-1.5%, and of these, cleft lip & palate is known to be the most frequent congenital abnormality, Cleft is considered to be due to multi-factorial heredity correlated with genetic and environmental factors, Cleft patients require the collaborative treatment with several medical departments, Clinics for Maxillo-Oral Disorders of Tohoku University Dental Hospital performs the total managements related to such as occlusion and language for the patients with congenital maxilla-facial abnormality, This study examined the patients with cleft lip and/or palate who came to the Clinics for Maxilla-Oral Disorders of Tohoku University Dental Hospital for the past 17 years from Jan. 1987 to Dec, 2002, and had the results as follows, 1. Annual mean number of patients The annual mean number of the patients for 17 years from Jan, 1987 to Dec, 2002 was 91 patients, ranging from 63 minimum to 116 maximum, 2, Gender and types of cleft There were 747(51%) males and 709(49%) females, with a male to female ratio 1,05:1. CLP was the most frequent cleft type as shown in 616 patients, and other patients manifested different complaints such as CL, CP, SMCP and MC in order. 3. The laterality in cleft type The lip cleft was frequently expressed orderly on left, right and both sides of CL patients while orderly being shown on left, both and right sides of CLP patients. Accordingly, lip cleft was most commonly found on the left side. 4. Address at first visit Of 1,456 subjects, 850(58.4%) patients were residing in Miyagi Prefecture, where this hospital is located. 5. Age at first visit 615(42.2%) patients came to the hospital at their age younger than 1 year old, comprising 282(19.4%) patients age younger than 2 months old and 333(22.9%) patients age between 2 month old and 1 year old. 6. Mother's age at birth For the mother's age at birth, 526(39.9%) patients were at the age of 25 to 30 years old, and 17(1.3%) patients were over 40 years old. 7. Birth weight 34.3%(443 patients) had a birth weight of 2500-3000gm and 56.0%(724 patients) had a 3000-4000gm. It was also found that 7.9%(102 patients) had a birth weight of less than 2500gm. 8. Familial expression The frequency of familial expression was 6.5%(94 patients).

The Effects of Semantic Association Task by Drawing in a Korean Bilingual Aphasic: A Case Study

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of associative drawing task in a Korean bilingual aphasic. The subject is a 41-year old male and lived and was educated in the United States for over 25 years(from the age of 14 through 39). His former occupation was a psychiatrist. He has had a massive lesion in the occipital lobe. This study focused on improving his spontaneous language performances by associative drawing task. The associative drawing task along with spontaneous speech is to help the subject's cognition. The ten target words in this treatment were familiar words and could be drawn easily. The results were that the associative drawing task was effective on improving the patient's drawing ability-writing ability in English only-and naming performance both in English and Korean. However, the patient's writing ability in Korean did not show any improvement.

CLINICAL CHARACTERISTICS AND TREATMENT COURSES OF THE CHILDREN WITH SELECTIVE MUTISM (선택적 함구증 아동의 임상특성 및 치료경과)

  • Selective mutism is a childhood condition defined by persisten failure to speak in specific social situation when speaking is expected, dispite preserved ability to comprehend spoken language and speak. Present study is to investigate clinical characteristics, treatment method and outcome of 23 children who were diagnosed as selective mutism by DSM-IV criteria at the child psychiatry ouptatient department of SNUH. The results were as follows : 1) The Sex ratio was 1: 4.8, female dominant Mear age of onset was 33 years old and mean age of first referral was 7.7 years old. 2) 22% of subjects had perinatal problem such as low birth weight, preterm birth, 26% of the subjects have history of delayed language development. There are subjects who had been separated with mam caretaker before 3 years old(26%) and who experienced physical or psychological trauma before 3 years old(26%). A few subjects had enurests(30%) and encoprests(4%). 3) Many subjects(65%) had symbiotic relationship with their mother. These families consist of dominant, verbally aggressive mother and passive father. Parents of 39% of all subjects were judged to have definite psychopathology(social phobic, depression, hysterical trait or alcohol problem) 26% of all subject, were reported physically abused. 4) The personality trait of the subjects were frequently described as follows(in order of frequency) ; Shy(100%), anxious(83%), stubborn(83%)m rigid and tense posture(78%), immature(65%) overdependent(65%), irritable(52%), manipulative(39%), depressive(39%). 5) The mean performance IQ of 16 subjects by KEDI-WISC was 88.3 Among them, the subjects with IQ below 69 were seven and those with IQ above 70 were nine. When comparing these two group(Mental retardation group vs Normal IQ group), we could find some difference in language development, personality trait, family dynamics and treatment outcome. 6) Among several treatment methods for selective mutism, play therapy was the most frequently used method(65%). Other commonly used treatment methods were pharmacotherapy(21%), behavioral therapy(8%), combined therapy(play therapy+pharmacotherapy+family therapy+behavioral therapy)(12%), 7) Regarding the outcome of treatment 8.6% was evaluated as Excellent, 30.4% as Good, 52% as Fair, 8.7% as Poor at the tinic of treatment. At follow up interview 21.7% was evaluated Excellent, 13% as Good, 21.7% as Fair, 34.8% as Poor. 8) We classified all subjects by Havden's 4 subtype. Symbiotic mutism was most common(65%) and other subtypes are Speech phobic mutism(8.6), Reactive mutism(13%) and Passive-aggressive mutism(30%).

Nursing Care Experience of Korean Nurses Dispatched to West Germany (파독간호사의 간호경험)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to understand the nursing care experience of Korean nurses dispatched to West Germany during 1960~1970s. Methods: Qualitative research using thematic analysis was done. The participants were 13 people who were 60~70 years old. The data were collected by in-depth and focus group interviews from January to June 2016. Results: The nursing experience of Korean nurses dispatched to west Germany were composed of 197 initial codes, 15 sub themes, 4 themes including "Challenging the possibilities", "Wandering in the sea without preparation", "Distinguishing between difference and discrimination", and "Balancing oneself in two chairs". Conclusion: In order for nurses to successfully move to another country, it is needed to educate the language and inform the nursing system and preliminary education on specific nursing activities.

Validity of the Korean Early Childhood Home Observation for Measurement of the Environment (3-6세 유아를 위한 가정환경자극 척도(EC-HOME)의 타당화 연구)

  • Participants in this study to develop the Korean version of the Early Childhood Home Observation for Measurement of the Environment(EC-HOME) were 294 3- to 6- year-old children enrolled in a child care center and their parents. Results were that EC-HOME had sufficient internal reliability : Cronbach's ${\alpha}=.80$. Correlation of test-retest ranged from .76~.97. In item-analysis, 9 items with low 'corrected item-total correlation' were removed resulting in 30 items. Factor analysis confirmed 6 factors : 1) Learning Material, 2) Learning Stimulation, 3) Responsivity, 4) Physical Environment, 5) Language Stimulation, and 6) Variety of Materials. Analysis of the relation of children's home environment to their characteristic variances with parents and developmental functioning showed high internal consistency and convergent validity of the sub-scales.

A Preliminary Study on the Supporting Strategies for Caring and Teaching Young Children from Multi-cultural Families (다문화 가정 유아 보육의 지원 전략 수립을 위한 기초적 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to establish strategies that support multi-cultural children' development and adaptation in day care centers. The subjects were 61 young children, 49 parents from multi-cultural family and 550 Korean young children. The instruments utilized were the Sukemune-Hiew Resilience Test for parents and the Danaka Deveopment Test for children. The statistical instruments used were the t-test and the Pearson product correlation coefficients. Our results indicated that : (1) In the case five or six years old children from multi-cultural families, language development lagged behind that of Korean children. (2) Social support systems were insufficient for parents of multi-cultural families. Our cnclusions suggest that establishing strategies is necessary for not only supporting the linguistic development of children from multi-cultural families, but strategies aimed at supporting their parents in day care centers need to be developed.

The Acquisition of Korean Grammatical Morphemes in Early Childhood (한국아동이 초기에 획득한 문법적 형태소의 종류 및 획득 시기)

  • To reveal when toddlers and children acquire the grammatical morpheme of Korean language, this study investigated the way they respond to some picture tasks. The object of this research was 174 children ranging from 18 months to 60 months, who were selected from two child-care centers located in Seoul and Gyeongi Province. Following the statistical analysis of the data, this study ascertained that 2-, and 3- year-old children acquire the most part of grammatical morphemes such as nouns, pronouns, verbs, adverbs, adjectives, and interrogation terms. The fact that the process of acquisition was significantly different among six age groups has proved the hypothesis of the gradual acquisition of grammatical morpheme.

Hierarchical Treatment of Aphasic Perserveration Program: A Case Study (위계적 고착현상 치료 프로그램의 적용: 사례 연구)

  • This study explored the effectiveness of a hierarchical treatment of aphasic perseveration (TAP) program in a Korean client with transcortical sensory aphasia. The subject with 52% perserveration score (Korean version of Boston Naming Test : K-BNT) was 44 year-old female with MCA (Middle cerebral artery) infarction. The experimental design used was an alternating treatment design with the hierarchical TAP and conventional audio-visual stimulation. The frequency of occurrence of perseverative behaviors and correct response in naming performance were analyzed and compared. It was claimed that the hierarchical TAP was more effective in naming performance than conventional audio-visual stimulation in terms of correct naming response. The frequency of occurrence of perseverative behaviors was lower in hierarchical TAP but the difference was relatively small. Unlike in English, sentence completion task was no longer stimulable while unison speech was very stimulable among the specific strategies of TAP program in Korean. Therefore, it could be said that TAP is language-dependent.
