  • We studied the structural and electrical properties of $SrRuO_3$ thin films grown on $SrTiO_3$ (110) substrate. High resolution X-ray diffraction measurement of the grown film showed 1) very sharp peaks for $SrRuO_3$ film with a very narrow rocking curve with FWHM = $0.045^{\circ}$ and 2) coherent growth behavior having the same in-plane lattice constants of the film as those of the substrate. The resisitivity data showed good metallic behavior; ${\rho}$ = 63(205) ${\mu}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$ at 5 (300) K with a residual resistivity ratio of ~3. The observed kink at ${\rho}(T)$ showed that the ferromagnetic transition temperature was ~10 K higher than that of $SrRuO_3$ thin film grown on $SrTiO_3$ (001) substrate. The observed rather lower RRR value could be partially due to a very small amount of Ru vacancy generally observed in $SrRuO_3$ thin films grown by PLD method and is evident in the larger unit-cell volume compared to that of stoichiometric thin film.

  • The lateral-mode characteristics of 850-nm GaAs/(Al,Ga)As multiple-quantum-well laser diodes and their influence on the kinks in output optical power are investigated. For the investigation, self-consistent electro-thermal-optical simulation and measurement of fabricated devices are used. From this investigation, the optimal P-cladding thickness that provides single-lateral-mode operation is determined, so that high beam quality can be achieved even at high output powers.

  • In this study, according to the staking method of the fire hose in the indoor hydrant system, the number of kinks when the fire hose is deployed was measured and analyzed to examine how the staking method of the fire hose affects the kink when the hose is deployed. The fire hose staking method was classified into three types: donut-type, accordion-type, and hose hanger-type, and the walking speed and number of kinks were measured by repeating the experiment 5 times for male and female students. The results of the study are as follows. (1) Among the three types of fire hose staking methods, the donut-type staking method had an average of 92 times for male students and 86 times for female students on average. (2) The accordion-type and hose hanger-type staking methods showed similar results with an average of one or two kinks for both male and female students. (3) Regardless of the staking method, it was found that in general, male students with high walking speed had more kinking than female students with slow walking speed.

  • In order to study on fatigue crack retardation and retardation mechanism in variable loading, the effects of crack tip branching in fatigue crack growth retardation were examined. The characteristics of crack tip banching behavior was considered to micro structure. It was examined that the variation of crack tip branching angle. Crack tip branching was observed along the grain boundary of ferrite and pearlite structure. It was found that the abanching angle ranges from 25 to 53 degrees. Using the finite element method, the variable of crack driving force to branching angle was examined. The effective crack driving force ( $K_{\eff}$ ) decreased as the braching angle increases. The rate of decrease was 33% for the kinked type and 29% for the forked one. It was confirmed that the effect of crack tip branching is a very important factor in fatigue crack growth retardation. Therefore, crack branching effect should be considered building the hypoth- etical model to predict crack growth retardation.

  • In this work, the effects of corner transistors in SOI MOSFETs were investigated. We fabricated SOI MOSFETs with various widths and a fixed length and characterized them. The SOI thickness was $4000{\AA}$ and the buried oxide(BOX) thickness was $4000{\AA}$. The isolation of active region was simply done by silicon etching and TEOS sidewall formation. Several undesirable characteristics have been reported for LOCOS isolation in fabrication on SOI wafers so far. Although we used an STI-like process instead of LOCOS, there were still a couple of abnormal phenomena such as kinks and double humps in drain current. Above all, we investigated the location of the parasitic transistors and found that they were at the corners of the SOI in width direction by high-resolution SEM inspection. It turned out that their characteristics are strongly dependent on the channel width. We made a contact pad through which we can control the body potential and figured out the dependency of operation on the body potential. The double humps became more prominent as the body bias went more negative until the full depletion of the channel where the threshold voltage shift did not occur any more. Through these works, we could get insights on the process that can reduce the effects of corner transistors in SOI MOSFETs, and several possible solutions are suggested at the end.

  • Nanoparticles of magnesium ferrite are used as a heterogeneous catalyst, humidity sensor, oxygen sensor and cure of local hyperthermia. These applications usually utilize the magnetic behavior of these nanoparticles. Moreover, magnetic properties of nanoferrites exhibit rather complex behavior compared to bulk ferrite. The magnetic properties of ferrites are complicated by spins at vortices, surface spins. Reports till date indicate strong dependency on the structural parameters, oxidation state of metal ions and their presence in octahedral and tetrahedral environment. Thus we have carried out investigation on magnesium ferrite nanoparticles in order to study coordination, oxidation state and structural distortion. For present work, magnesium ferrite nanoparticles were synthesized using nitrates of metal ions and citric acid. Fe L-edge spectra measured for these nanoparticles shows attributes of $Fe^{3+}$ in high spin state. Moreover O K-edge spectra for these nanoparticles exhibit spectral features that arises due to unoccupied states of O 2p character hybridized with metal ions. Mg K-edge spectra shows spectral features at 1304, 1307, 1311 and 1324 eV for nanoparticles obtained after annealing at 400, 500, 600, 800, 1000, and $1200^{\circ}C$. Apart from this, spectra for precursor and nanoparticles obtained at $300^{\circ}C$ exhibit a broad peak centered around 1305 eV. A shoulde rlike structure is present at 1301 eV in spectra for precursor. This feature does not appear after annealing. After annealing a small kink appear at ~1297 eV in Mg K-edge spectra for all nanoparticles. This indicates changes in local electronic structure during annealing of precursor. Observed behavior of change in local electronic structure will be discussed on the basis of existing theories.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the reusability of the fluff pulp recycled from paper diaper. To do this, the physical and optical properties of each handsheet made from these fluff pulp sample as well as the properties of the fiber recycled from paper diaper were analyzed and compared with those of non-recycled diaper fluff pulp samples and conventional pulp samples. These comparisons show that the characteristics of fiber such as length, width, curl, kink of the pulp recycled from paper diaper were similar to those of non-recycled diaper fluff pulp as well as to those of commercial pulp. The fine content of recycled diaper fluff pulp was lower than that of other pulp samples, while the ash content of the former was higher than that of the latter. Furthermore, it was also found that the bulk of handsheets made from the recycled fluff pulp was higher than that of other pulp samples, while the formation of the former was worse than that of the latter. The mechanical properties of the handsheet sample made from the recycled diaper fluff pulp was higher than those of the unused diaper fluff pulp and was lower that those of commercial fluff pulp and softwood tissue pulp handsheet. But, it was higher than that of hardwood tissue pulp handsheet. The optical properties of recycled diaper fluff pulp handsheet was lower than those of each handsheet samples made from other pulps due to its low fine content.

  • Using the MHD coronal seismology technique, we estimated the magnetic field for three spicules observed in 2008 June. For this study, we used the high resolution Ca II H line ($3968.5\;{\AA}$) images observed by the Hinode SOT and considered a vertical thin flux tube as a spicule model. To our knowledge, this is the first attempt to estimate the spicule magnetic field using the Hinode observation. From the observed oscillation properties, we determined the periods, amplitudes, minimum wavelengths, and wave speeds. We interpreted the observed oscillations as MHD kink waves propagating through a vertical thin flux tube embedded in a uniform field environment. Then we estimated spicule magnetic field assuming spicule densities. Major results from this study are as follows : (1) we observed three oscillating spicules having durations of 5-7 minutes, oscillating periods of 2-3 minutes, and transverse displacements of 700-1000 km. (2) The estimated magnetic field in spicules is about 10-18 G for lower density limit and about 43-76 G for upper density limit. (3) In this analysis, we can estimate the minimum wavelength of the oscillations, such as 60000 km, 56000 km, and 45000 km. This may be due to the much longer wavelength comparing with the height of spicules. (4) In the first event occurred on 2008 June 03, the oscillation existed during limited time (about 250 s). This means that the oscillation may be triggered by an impulsive mechanism (like low atmospheric reconnection), not continuous. Being compared with the ground-based observations of spicule oscillations, our observation indicates quite different one, i.e., more than one order longer in wavelength, a factor of 3-4 larger in wave speed, and 2-3 times longer in period.

  • $H{\alpha}$ surges (i.e. cool/dense collimated plasma ejections) may act as a guide for a propagation of magnetohydrodynamic waves. We report a high-resolution observation of a surge observed with 1.6m Goody Solar Telescope (GST) on 2009 August 26, from 18:20~UT to 18:45UT. Characteristics of plasma motions in the surge are determined with the normalizing radial gradient filter and the Fourier motion filter. The shape of the surge is found to change from a 'C' shape to an inverse 'C' shape after a formation of a cusp, a signature of reconnection. There are apparent upflows seen above the cusp top and downflows below it. The upflows show rising and rotational motions in the right-hand direction, with the rotational speed decreasing with height. Near the cusp top, we find a transverse oscillation of the surge, with the period of ~2 min. There is no change of the oscillation phase below the cusp top, but above the top a phase change is identified, giving a vertical phase speed about 86kms-1. As the height increases, the initial amplitude of the oscillation increases, and the oscillation damping time decreases from 5.13 to 1.18min. We conclude that the oscillation is a propagating kink wave that is possibly excited by an x-point oscillation.
