The study was undertaken to provide information on the efficacy of sanitizers against bacteria with and without organic road dried on to food contact surfaces using the surface test method which EU and USA are currently implementing as one of their official test methods. Escherochia coli ATCC 10536 or Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538 was inoculated on to food contact surfaces, such as stainless steel, polypropylene, and silicon, which was then treated with benzalkonium chloride, sodium hypochlorite, or ethanol as a sanitizer for 5minutes at $20^{\circ}C$. Results indicated that the type of surface had little affected the efficacy of various sanitizers. In addition, 200 ppm of benzalkonium chloride or 200 ppm of sodium hypochlorite showed no definite reduction of bacterial populations in the present of organic load, while 40% ethanol showed reduction to $4\;cfu\;\log_{10}$/carrier or more in viable count in the organic load.
A new silkworm variety "Daepoongjam" for spring rearing season is $F_1$ hybrid between Jam151, a Japanese race bred from introduction breeding and Jam152, a Chinese race from introduction breeding. In the local adaptatability test performed at 8local areas in spring of 2005, the heavy cocoon yield of "Daepoongjam" was recorded 6% higher than "Kumokjam". The concentration of Deokynojirimycin (DNJ) was measured 4.22 mg in "Daepoongjam", similar to "Kumokjam" (4.26 mg). In the Peacilomyces tenuipes production ability test, the pupal weight of "Daepoongjam" was 1.61 g/individual 13% heavier than "Kumokjam" (1.41 g/individual)
A new silkworm variety "Buhungjam" for autumn rearing season is $F_1$ hybrid between Jam149, a japanese race bred from introduction breeding and Jam150, a chinese race from introduction breeding. Jam149, japanese parent of the "Buhungjam" showed high GCA in pupation percentage, cocoon shell percentage and filament length and Jam15, chinese parent showed high GCA in cocoon shell percentage and cocoon filament length. In the local adaptability test performed at 8 local areas in spring of 2003, Buhungjam records 7% higher in cocoon yield and 8% in raw silk yield than the check variety, Daesungjam.

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of supplementation of fermented wheat bran (FWB) on growth and blood characteristics in weaned pig. A total of 36 weaned pigs ($Landrace{\times}Yorkshire{\times}Duroc$; BW, $7.78{\pm}0.04kg$) were randomly allocated to three dietary treatments with different FWB concentrations (0, 0.5, and 1.0%), and each treatment had 3 replicate pens with 4 pigs per pen. The FWB was obtained from a mixture of wheat bran and two microbes (Lactobacillus plantarum M10 and Saccaromyces cerevisiae) and was determined to contain $10.19{\pm}0.27log\;CFU/g$ of L. plantarum and $7.73{\pm}0.38log\;CFU/g$ of S. cerevisiae. Experimental diets were prepared by mixing 0 (control), 0.5, or 1.0% of the FWB to the basal diet, and fed to the weaned pigs for 7 weeks. During the experimental period, the pigs had access to the diet and water ad libitum. Feed intake increased significantly in the 1.0% FWB group compared to the control and 0.5% FWB groups (p < 0.05), whereas the other growth parameters were not different among the treatment groups. White blood cells and lymphocytes were significantly decreased in the FWB treatment groups compared to the control group, but other blood corpuscles were not different among the treatment groups (p < 0.05). The pigs fed 0.5% FWB showed greater serum IgG than the control and 1.0% FWB groups (p < 0.05). In conclusion, the FWB fed to weaned pigs did not negatively affect their growth performance, but rather reduced mortality by fortifying immunity.
To investigate the effect of pine needle extract (PNE) on membrane fluidirt and neurotransmiter-related enzymes in brain of Spragu-Dawley(SD), male SD rats were fed basic diets (control group), and experimantal diets (PNE group)with 0.5% and 0.1% fo PNE for 6 weeks. pine (pinus tabulaeformis C$_{ARR}$ is one of the popular plant drugs which has used as a medicine in Asia. Cholesterol levels in brain mitochondria of 0.5%-PNE and 0.1%-PNDE groups were significantly decreased in 15% and 25%, respectively, compared with control group, but cholesterol levels in brain microsomes of these PNE groups howed almost no change compared with control group. Lipofuscin accumulations in brain membranes of 0.5%-PNE and 0.1%-PNE groups were sgnificantly inhibited in 18% and 21%, respectively, compared with control group. Brain memberance fluidity was also activated in 50% and 100% by the administration of 0.5%-PNE and 0.1%-PNE. higher acetylcholinesterase(15% and25%) and lower monoamine oxidase B (25% and 15%0 activities were effectively modulated by the administration of 0.5%-PNE and 0.1%-PNDE. These results suggest that more beneficial effects such as inhibition of cholesterol and lipofuscin, increase of membrane fluidity, higher acetylcholinesterase and lower monoamone oxidase activities in brain membranes of SD rats may be effectively modulated by administration of pine needle extract (PNE).
This study is aimed to present measures for stable supply of fishmeal and to develop fish farming into a food industry and an export industry. The study analyzed current domestic and international supply and demand for fishmeal and suggested future prospects. The results of the study suggested the basic directions for the stable supply of fishmeal in Korea as follows: first, stable securing of fishmeal importers and establishment of the supply and demand monitoring system; second, policies to boost using of compound feeds and expansion of relevant fishmeal use; third, higher competitiveness of fishmeal and compound feeds through selective and intensive R&D investments. Based on the basic directions, the paper suggested implementation measures such as strengthening of cooperations with fishmeal suppliers abroad, expansion of overseas local market entrance, diversification of fishmeal trading countries, revision of relevant laws and polices on the fishmeal and feeds, organization of domestic fishmeal, promotion of group purchase, improvement of domestic fish meal quality, development of fish meal alternatives, etc.
This study presents a comparative analysis of enforcement and regulatory compliance issues in Korean and American fisheries. The comparison involves characterizing factors which affect regulatory compliance. The study also suggests policy directions and strategies by characteristics of factors suitable to Korean fisheries circumstances in order to induce voluntary compliance from fishers and to make compliance friendly environment for the fishers. In detail, this study has 3 steps as follows. First, this study characterizes factors influencing compliance and non - compliance caused by various reasons and categorizes these factors by considering theories for fisheries regulatory compliance. Major categories of compliance factors consist of fisheries resources, users(fishers), and the government. Each category is composed of several factors and sub - factors by characteristics. Second, this study seeks to diagnose problems and limitations from the regulatory compliance in Korean and US' fisheries by analyzing the current status of the compliance in both countries. The comparative analysis between two countries highlights the problems and limitations of each country's regulatory compliance and leads to implications for Korean fisheries. Third, this study suggests policy directions and strategies suitable to Korean regulatory compliance environment through detailed understanding of U.S.' fisheries regulatory compliance. The suggested strategies are based on the concept of voluntary compliance and compliance - friendly environment, not command and control regulations. Furthermore, this study provides policy suggestions for Korean fisheries regulatory enforcement and compliance issues.
Allium hookeri is a plant species native to India, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, and China. The plant is widely cultivated in Korea lately as a medicinal food item. This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of Allium hookeri (A. hookeri) on lipid metabolism in Type II diabetic mice (n=8/group, 5 groups). High fat diets with dextrin as a positive control (Dex), leaf (AL), root (AR), and fermented root (FAR) at 3% of diet were fed to all experimental mouse, respectively for 8 weeks. Body weight gain, liver and epididymal fat weights, and excreted fecal lipid levels were measured. Serum and hepatic lipid profiles were analyzed, and fat accumulation in liver was evaluated. In this study, body weight gain and epididymal fat weight were lower in the FAR group, while serum HDL-cholesterol level and excreted fecal total lipid and triglyceride levels were higher in AL or FAR groups. These results suggest that A. hookeri, specially fermented root can be a useful food item to control lipid metabolism in diabetic mice.
Bacterial suspension test was used to establish Standardization Test Method to investigate bactericidal activity of disinfectant/sanitizer product. Using acceptable verification methodology, test substance showing 5 log or higher reduction in viable count against Escherichia coli ATCC 10536 and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538, representing Gram-negative and -positive bacteria, respectively, under test conditions for $5\;min{\pm}10\;sec\;at\;20{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ was considered to have sanitizing capability. All disinfectant/sanitizer products tested under manufacturer's recommended in-use condition gave good reduction values against major food-poisoning bacteria. This standardized method was valuable for evaluating efficacy of disinfectants/sanitizers and could be used as Standardization Test Method for assessing bactericidal activity
