Objective: In a statistical linear model estimating the center of rotation of a human hip joint, which is the parameter related to the mean of response vectors, assumptions of homoscedasticity and independence of position vectors measured repeatedly over time in the model result in an inefficient parameter. We, therefore, should take into account the variance-covariance structure of longitudinal responses. The purpose of this study was to estimate the efficient center of rotation vector of the hip joint by using covariance pattern models. Method: The covariance pattern models are used to model various kinds of covariance matrices of error vectors to take into account longitudinal data. The data acquired from functional motions to estimate hip joint center were applied to the models. Results: The results showed that the data were better fitted using various covariance pattern models than the general linear model assuming homoscedasticity and independence. Conclusion: The estimated joint centers of the covariance pattern models showed slight differences from those of the general linear model. The estimated standard errors of the joint center for covariance pattern models showed a large difference with those of the general linear model.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the changes of physical function, perceptual and cognitive function, emotional function, and functional independence in the institutionalized aged according to functional group activity program (self help Tai Chi exercise plus functional task). Methods: Study subjects were 20 institutionalized aged from June to October in 2010. The subjects received functional group activity program two times a week for 15 weeks. Physical function (grip strength, coordination, lower extremity strength, balance, gait, trunk flexibility), perceptual and cognitive function, emotional function(depression, social skill), and functional independence were measured before and after the program. Results: The subjects showed significantly increased physical function (coordination, lower extremity strength, gait, trunk flexibility), perceptual and cognitive function, emotional function (depression, social skill), and functional independence. The functional group activity program may be an effective strategy for institutionalized elders to enhance their functions. Conclusion: The functional group activity program may be effective on elderly institutions which have limitation in human, material, environmental resources.

Imputation procedures fill-in missing values, thereby enabling complete data analyses. Fully efficient fractional imputation (FEFI) and multiple imputation (MI) create multiple versions of the missing observations, thereby reflecting uncertainty about their true values. Methods have been described for hypothesis testing with multiple imputation. Fractional imputation assigns weights to the observed data to compensate for missing values. The focus of this article is the development of tests of independence using FEFI for partially classified two-way contingency tables. Wald and deviance tests of independence under FEFI are proposed. Simulations are used to compare type I error rates and Power. The partially observed marginal information is useful for estimating the joint distribution of cell probabilities, but it is not useful for testing association. FEFI compares favorably to other methods in simulations.

In this paper we study pooling effects in Bayesian testing procedures of independence for contingency tables from small areas. In small area estimation setup, we typically use a hierarchical Bayesian model for borrowing strength across small areas. This techniques of borrowing strength in small area estimation is used to construct a Bayes test of independence for contingency tables from small areas. In specific, we consider the methods of direct or indirect pooling in multinomial models through Dirichlet priors. We use the Bayes factor (or equivalently the ratio of the marginal likelihoods) to construct the Bayes test, and the marginal density is obtained by integrating the joint density function over all parameters. The Bayes test is computed by performing a Monte Carlo integration based on the method proposed by Nandram and Kim (2002).

This study proposes generalized models of joint latent class analysis (JLCA) for longitudinal data in two approaches, a JLCA with latent profile (JLCPA) and a JLCA with latent transition (JLTA). Our models reflect cross-sectional as well as longitudinal dependence among multiple latent classes and track multiple class-sequences over time. For the identifiability and meaningful inference, EM algorithm produces maximum-likelihood estimates under local independence assumptions. As an empirical analysis, we apply our models to track the joint patterns of adolescent depression and anxiety among US adolescents and show that both JLCPA and JLTA identify three adolescent emotional well-being subgroups. In addition, JLCPA classifies two representative profiles for these emotional well-being subgroups across time, and these profiles have different tendencies according to the parent-adolescent-relationship subgroups.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate effect of Thera-Band stretching exercise on flexibility of shoulder joint. Methods: The research deign was a experimental pre-post control group design. Sixteen subject were randomly divided into two groups; experimental group(n=8) and control group(n=8). Experimental group performed Thera-Band PNF stretching for 4 weeks and control group was not performed. To compare with the effectiveness of Thera-Band PNF stretching between two groups, I measured flexibility of shoulder joint with an Apley scratch test. The data were analyzed by Independence T-test. Results: The experimental group was significantly increased the flexibility at the right and left shoulder internal rotation. But the experimental group was not significantly increased the flexibility at the right and left shoulder external rotation. Conclusion: These result suggest that home-based exercise programs with Thera-Band can serve as a practical and effective means of flexibility gains in general people.
This study is aimed at presenting the information on tailor-made clothes products which could positively relieve the psychological anxiety of the aged and enhance their living independence, and also at the development of clothes designs which could help them enjoy their healthy and activities. Based on the survey, the study conducted the research and analysis on the wearing practices, problems, and improvements for the clothes for the aged and found out their favorite clothes designs and colors. Based on the findings, the clothes models were recruited that reflect the physical features of silver-generation women and assist them with their joint protection. Moreover, the emphases were placed on the convenience of dressing or undressing, and the current fashion of development of clothes. The number of the clothes models developed were 11 for one pants suit, two skirt suits, one knit wear, one training wear, and one bolero.
In this paper, an optical encryption system using binary key code based on the joint transform correlator (JTC) is considered. The binary key code is synthesized by using a design technique of the pixel-oriented Computer Generated Holograms (CGHs). The independence and efficiency of the binary encryption key are investigated through computer simulation. To test the efficiency of the encryption system using binary key code, a holographic encryption system is constructed, and the experimental results prove that our holographic encryption system has high ability.

We study the dependence between the insureds in multiple-life insurance contracts. With the future lifetimes of the insureds modeled as correlated random variables, both premium and reserve are different from those under independence. In this paper, Gaussian copula is used to impose the dependence between the insureds with Gompertz marginals. We analyze the change of the reserves of standard multiple-life insurance contracts at various dependence levels. We find that the reserves based on the assumption of dependent lifetimes are quite different for some contracts from those under independence as its correlation increase, which elucidate the importance of the dependence model in multiple-life contingencies in both theory and practice.

Arthritis is a major cause of joint pain, stiffness, and subsequent disability which adversely affects quality of life. Seriously, it can lead to long term social and psychological effects including loss of independence, depression, and anxiety. Arthritis is usually treated with joint replacement surgery or medications. However, the artificial joint is temporary and pharmacological measures have side effects, such as addiction or hypersensitivity. Thus, orthotics has been developed to improve arthritis as a nonpharmacological measure. The increased regional load across compartments of articular cartilage is an important factor in the cause of the arthritis. Mubal$^{(R)}$, a clinical shoe insole, has a sliding function to help people to walk straight and realign the body balance. The slide of Mubal$^{(R)}$ reduces the knee joint loading in patients with arthritis. In addition, pumping function of Mubal$^{(R)}$ can mitigate arthritis by stretching the squashed nerves from lumbar to cervical vertebral and actively circulating blood of pelvic limb. In addition, Mubal$^{(R)}$ could help to stimulate the growth plate. Therefore, Mubal$^{(R)}$ can be used for the child with short stature as well as patients with arthritis.
