This study analyzed the experiences of victims of state violence, discovered differences between state violence and general trauma, and proposed ways to help heal trauma. Participants were composed of state violence victims and their families in total, including 11 from the Jeju 43 Incident, 11 from the Yeos u·Sunchoen 10.19 Incident and 6 form May 18th Democratic Uprising. As a result of using the grounded theory to analyze data, a total of 170 concepts, 57 subcategories, and 20 categories were derived. The central phenomenon was direct damage caused by state violence. This included 'post-traumatic stress', 'social stigma', 'isolation from community', 'socio-economical issues' and 'family dissolution'. As a result of the process analysis, the participants experienced six phases: 'trauma', 'isolation', 'resistance', 'resignation', 'recovery', and 'growth.' Each phase is sequential but at the time mutually affect each other. Based on the results, this study verified the difference between state violence and general trauma, and emphasized social and cultural factors, such as community support, were important factors in healing state violence trauma. Besides, the implications and limitations as well as suggestions for future research were mentioned.
In the present study, we investigated the biological activities of Xylosma congesta leaf ethanol extract (XCO) using a variety of in vitro and cell culture model systems for anti-melanogenic, anti-wrinkle, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant activities. First, XCO markedly inhibited ${\alpha}$-melanocyte stimulating hormone-stimulated melanin synthesis in B16F10 cells. Secondly, XCO marginally induced procollagen synthesis in CCD-986SK cells. Thirdly, XCO dose-dependently suppressed lipopolysaccharide-induced nitric oxide (NO) production in RAW 264.7 cells. XCO did not affect cell viability at different concentrations used in this study, indicating that XCO-mediated inhibition of melanin, procollagen and NO synthesis is not mediated by cytotoxicity. Finally, XCO was found to exert anti-oxidant effect. Taken together, these findings demonstrate for the first time that XCO possesses anti-melanogenic, anti-wrinkle, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant activities, and suggest further evaluation and development of XCO as a functional supplement or cosmetic that may be useful for whitening skin, reducing wrinkles and treating inflammatory responses.

This study was conducted to determine the ideal beginning date of plastic house optimum heating for off-season (December) production of asparagus. To achieve this, the 1.6-year-old 'Green tower' asparagus was cultivated in Jeju area ($33^{\circ}$28.110N, $126^{\circ}$31.076E) and the yield and quality among 7 different beginning dates of heating from Oct. 25 to Jan. 20 with 15-days interval were compared. The heating was controlled to maintain the inside temperature was higher than $20^{\circ}C$, But the plastic house was ventilated when the inside temperature rose to $30^{\circ}C$. Days to sprouting took longer as heating dates were delayed. Days to sprouting took 52 days in heating at December 30, and the days were shortened thereafter. As the beginning of heating was delayed, sprouting of asparagus was retarded. Among treatments, days to sprouting was 52 days and longest when the heating began on December 30. When the heating began on October 25, harvest was earliest and started on 7 November. When the heating began on November 15 and 30, harvest started on November 30 and December 18, respectively. Harvesting started on November 7 for October 25 heating, November 30 for Nov. 15 heating, and December 18 for November 30 heating, respectively. When the heating began was done after December. 15, harvesting was possible after early January. The number of spear, spear weight and yield were highly increased in the treatments of heating after January. 10 when the asparagus dormancy was broken. In the case of heating dates were before the asparagus dormancy breaking, the total yield was highest in November 15 heating with 607 kg/10a. The marketable yield of November 15 heating was 386kg/10a, which was twice higher than the 193 kg/10a of October 25 heating. Accordingly, it is recommended to start heating on November 15 for the production of off-season (December) asparagus in Jeju. Therefore, the optimum heating date to start was November 15 for the improvement of quality and yield of off-season (December) asparagus in Jeju area.
Carrot leaves have many nutrients as well as roots, which will increase the demand for carrot leaves in the future. This study was carried out by dividing into two stages: high temperature and low temperature periods, in order to investigate the possibility of cultivation of carrot leaves and the composition and EC of the nutrient solution for growth and quality of carrot leaves. Composition of nutrient solution($NO_3-N:16.0$, $NH_4-N:1.0$, P: 1.0, K: 11.0, Ca: 2.0, Mg: 1.0, $SO_4-S:1.0mM{\cdot}L^{-1}$) developed by analysis of plant. In the high temperature range (From June $29^{th}$ to Sep. $8^{th}$, 2016), the concentration of the developed nutrient solution (JNU) were 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, and $4.0dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ and the concentration of nutrient solution of Japanese Horticultural Station(JHS) $2.0dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ was used for comparison. In the low temperature range (From Dec. $31^{st}$, 2015 to Feb. $29^{th}$, 2016), the concentration of the developed nutrient solution 1.0, 2.0, and $3.0dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ were used. Growth was investigated in root fresh and dry weights, shoot fresh and dry weights, leaf number, and leaf area of carrot. In the high temperature range, the leaf area and shoot fresh and dry weights were good at 1.0 and $2.0dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$. The sugar content of the root was the highest at the EC $2.0dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$, and the chlorophyll content was the highest at the EC $4.0dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$. In the low temperature range, The shoot fresh and dry weights were the highest at EC 1.0 and $2.0dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$. There was no significant difference in sugar content and chlorophyll content. As a result, from the viewpoint of growth and quality of carrot, it is good to cultivate EC 1.0 and $2.0dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ in high temperature period and low temperature period, but EC $1.0dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ is economical perspective such as fertilizer input.
We investigated the seasonal variations in growth and physiological responses of the kelp species Ecklonia cava to different nitrogen sources to establish indoor culture conditions for mass production. Ecklonia cava was cultivated for 10 days in 16 combinations of seawater temperatures (15, 17, 21, and 25℃) and different nitrogen sources (control; NH-NH4+ 100 μM; NO-NO3- 100 μM; and NHNO-NH4+ 50 μM+NO3- 50 μM). The growth and growth rate of the blade were affected by temperature. The mean fresh weight and area-based daily growth rate were the highest (5.8±0.5 and 6.6±0.5% day-1, respectively) at 15℃ and the lowest (2.2±0.2 and 3.0±0.3% day-1, respectively) at 25℃. The daily growth rate was the highest in the NH and NO treatments and lowest in the control. The nitrate reductase activity of E. cava varied with water temperature (season). The highest activity was in the control (1.32±0.10 μmol NO2- g-1 dry weight h-1) and the lowest was in the NH treatment (0.25±0.02 μmol NO2- g-1 dry weight h-1). The photosynthetic pigment concentrations reached a maximum value in the NHNO treatment and a minimum value in the control. These results showed that water temperature played an important role in the cultivation of E. cava and that a single supply of NH4+ or NO3- may induce the accelerated growth of E. cava. The growth and physiological responses of E. cava to different nitrogen sources during each season provide valuable information for determining the optimal nitrogen source in E. cava cultivation under indoor conditions.
The construction procedures and artificial turf maintenance program on golf course definitely influence on the distortion of its environment. Soil microbial communities in soil profile were affected directly by those practises on turf areas. In Jeju island, the environmental impact assessment has been required to apply the first quality class granular activated carbon(GAC), which has a high absorbent character to agricultural chemicals, on the soil profiles of golf green system to reduce the pesticide leaching to ground water. This research was carried out to analyze the changes of microbial communities and chemical properties on soil profiles where GAC had been applied at the construction stage at two golf courses in Jeju. The changes of soil microbial population and chemical properties associated with construction methods of soil profile and agrochemical management program were analyzed by monthly at the surface and sub-soil profiles during April through October, 2007. The total numbers of bacteria and fungi, soil moisture content, soil physio-chemical properties were measured on greens and fairways of the both golf courses with different GAC treatment on the green and fairway soil profiles. The results showed that GAC had positive effects on the water holding capacity, pH and EC, however, it did not improved the holding capacity of available nutrients ${NO_3}^-,{NH_4}^+$, and phosphorus by its sorption phenomenon. In microbial count test, the total numbers of bacteria and fungi showed a great variation during sampling dates. That may directly relate to the agrochemical application, however, the ratio of total bacterial number versus total fungus number showed a constant value on a sub-soil of 15~30cm depth. Thus, the construction method of GAC in soil profile, and application of fertilizer and pesticide, both impacted on the changes of microbial population. It's means that the construction method of soil profile and turf management using agro-materials might greatly affect on the turfgrass culture and the environment of golf course.

Soybean extract is known to play an important role in preventing and treating diseases associated with aging, cancer, obesity, and cardiovascular disease. A recent has revealed that soybean extract has a potent effect on hair growth in in vitro, in vivo, and clinical studies. Recently, it has been reported that their fermented extracts exhibit numerous and high efficacy, as compared to general extracts. However, the underlying mechanisms that induce hair growth after using fermented soybean extract are not well understood. The present study aimed to determine the effects of fermented Jeju soybean (FJS) extract on hair growth, with a focus on the underlying mechanisms similar to those of minoxidil. We conducted in vitro and ex vivo investigations and clinical studies. FJS extract enhanced dermal papilla cell proliferation, VEGF levels, and potassium channel opening. Moreover, it promoted human hair follicle elongation. These effects were comprehensively demonstrated in the clinical results, in which FJS extract-containing shampoo improved hair density after 24 weeks of utilization. Collectively, the results of this study demonstrate that FJS extract promotes hair growth and inhibits hair loss through a mechanism similar to that of minoxidil in hair follicles.

People are destined to live according to the time and fate after they are born. Man is connected with the idea that is called the Chinese zodiac sign related to one out of 12 animals, regardless of one's thought. This paper was written with the expectation that it will be a new turning point understanding the mutual influence and its changing process by catching the ethnic belief and emotion as well as its cultural background in the Asian Zone by investigating the meaning of the 12 Chinese zodiac shown in the folk painting from the viewpoint of folk lore including "Chinese zodiac sign" culture rooted in our daily lives. The animal 'Rat' has been lived well human beings accompanied by the fable or the nature, while the animal 'Ox' has been living together with human history. The 'Tiger' has been considered the 'Power retreating disease or a devil' to humans, which is the most frightening but near at hand. The 'Rabbit' in the fable is inculcating hope and ideals to humans. The imaginary 'Dragon' is rooted in the deep national belief, which is seated as 'Guardian god' of farming culture and mankind, while the 'Snake' is playing a role in protecting humans as the 'Sea God' in Tsushima and Jeju Island, and has been believed and followed in the deep mind of humans. The 'Horse' in the nomad culture has been adorned as the basic creature of nomadic society in the character of a psychic medium between the human and god or their 'Guardian god'. The ancient Japanese regarded 'Monkey' as holy, being connected with treasure. It infers a human's desire to borrow wisdom from 'Monkey'. 'Chicken' includes the meaning of a lucky sign connecting the sky and the human world by arranging together with humans. The 'Dog' is believed and followed as performing the function of a messenger connecting this world with the afterlife in the next world tale of shamanism. The 'Pig' also lives well with humans, being interpreted as fecundity. Although the meaning of the 12 Chinese Zodiac animals has ethnic differences, all of them have been shared with humans, rooted in the human mind, being believed, and followed in human lives.
To stabilize the lantern cage culture system of Patinopecten yessoensis(Jay) in the eastern coast of Korean peninsula, optimum conditions such as time of transplantation, rearing density and depth, and time of harvest were identified. During the period from January 1991 to December 1998, the water temperature ranged from 4.7 to 21.4$^{\circ}C$ at 15-30 m depth and 4.9 to 25.7$^{\circ}C$ at the surface; these thermal ranges were within the optimal ranges (5-23$^{\circ}C$) prevailing at 15-30 m depth at surface water. Annual thermal changes indicated that the prevailing temperature during the years 1993 and 1996 was near optimum, but higher during the years 1994, 1997 and 1998, when mass mortality and growth retardation occurred. Salinity (32.0- 34.4$\textperthousand$) and dissolved oxygen (4.14 -8.11 $\mu\textrm{g}$/l) at 15 m depth were well within the optimum ranges. The chlorophyll concentrations (0.06 - 2.73$\mu\textrm{g}$/l) indicated that the study area was oligotrophic, although mass mortality did occur, when chlorophyll concentrations were high, especially in summer. Hence water temperatures and chlorophyll concentration are major factors related to survival and growth of the scallop. In terms of the shell height maximum growth occurred during spring (March-May; 8 - l3$^{\circ}C$) and fall (October-December; 11-l7$^{\circ}C$) in the lantern cage culture. Slow growth was recorded during late winter January-february; less than 7$^{\circ}C$) and mid-summer (August- September; more than 18$^{\circ}C$). Daily growth of shell height and total weight were 0.02∼0.24 mm and -0.07∼0.90 g at the rearing density of 12 individuals per net. Optimal .earing density in the lantern cage (ø50${\times}$20 cm) was 10∼15 individuals with the shell height of 5∼6 cm. The fastest growth rates were observed at 15∼20 m depth; however, it is recommended that 20∼30 m would be optimal. The scallops require 22 months to attain the commercial size of 10 cm shell height and 140 g total weigh, and are best harvested and sold during March-April.

In landscape architecture, plants play an important role in realizing the intention of the architect and user- behavior as well as an ecology and appearance of the space for them. However, it is true that many researches have focused on ecological characteristics of plants, their cultivation environment and symbolic meanings in traditional terms, while relatively few for the analysis of the aspects of each period through plants. For this, cherry trees that we often see around are selected and their introduction, propagation, development and symbolism from the view of chronicle are studied and the results are followings; Firstly, three-year seedlings of 1,500 pieces of cherry tree from Osaka and Tokyo were planted for the first time in Oieseongdae, Namsan Park, Seoul. Since then, they had been widely planted at traditional sites, modern parks, newly-constructed roads for street trees, and for this, the Japanese Government-General of Chosun had actively supported by its direct cultivation and selling of cherry trees. The spread of cherry trees planted raised the question of whether or not Prunus yedoensis is originated from Jeju Island. Secondly, such massive and artificial planting of them had become attractions over the time and mass media at that time also had actively promoted it. And such trend made the day and night picnic under the cherry blossoms one of the most representative cultures of enjoying spring in Seoul. Thirdly, although general people enjoyed cherry blossoms, but they had dual view and attitude for cherry trees, which were well expressed in their use of them: for example, cherry blossoms, aeng and sakura were used altogether for same meaning, but night aeng or night picnic under cherry blossoms were especially used instead of yojakura when mentioning just pleasure, which meant some saw night enjoying cherry blossoms a low culture. Fourth, symbolic space of Chosun had been transformed into the space for enjoyment and consumption. Anyone who paid entrance fee could enjoy performance of revugirl, cinema and entertainment along with enjoying cherry blossoms. The still-existing strict differentiation of enjoyment culture by social status, class and ethnicity was dismantled from that trend and brought about a kind of disorder. From this, we could find that cherry blossoms had made a great contribution to the change of traditional enjoyment culture over the Japanese colonial period and become a popular spring enjoyment.
