This study aims to 1) examine the difference of parent's participation intention for early childhood secondhand smoke prevention depending on sex, education level, income level, and smoking or nonsmoking of parent, parent's knowledge and attitude of early childhood secondhand smoke 2) estimate the influence of independent factors on parent's participation intention for early childhood secondhand smoke prevention centering around factors stated previously, and 3) suggest effective strategies to ultimately encourage parent's behavior for early childhood secondhand smoke prevention. A total of 279 parents with four- and five-year-old day care children participated in this study. The following are the main results of this study. First, the higher the level of income parent had, the higher the level of participation intention for early childhood secondhand smoke prevention parent had. Second, nonsmoking parent exhibited higher level of participation intention than smoking parent. Finally, parent's knowledge and attitude of early childhood secondhand smoke had influence on parent's participation intention for early childhood secondhand smoke prevention, but parent's attitude had a high degree of influence on parent's participation intention.
Intention to smoke is a valid and reliable factor for predicting future smoking habits among adolescents. This factor, however, has received inadequate attention in Malaysia. The present paper elaborates the prevalence and factors associated with intent to initiate or to cease smoking, among adolescent nonsmokers and smokers in Kota Tinggi, Johor, Malaysia. A total of 2,300 secondary school students aged 13-16 years were selected through a two-stage stratified sampling method. A set of standardized questionnaires was used to assess the smoking behavior among adolescents and the inter-personal and intra-personal factors associated with smoking intention (intention to initiate smoking or to cease smoking). Multivariable logistic regression was used to identify factors related to smoking intention. The prevalence of intention to smoke in the future or to cease smoking among non-smoking adolescents and current smokers were 10.7% and 61.7% respectively. Having friends who smoke, social influence, and poor knowledge about the ill effects on health due to smoking showed significant relationships with intention to smoke in the future among non-smokers. Conversely, perceived lower prevalence of smoking among peers, weak contributory social influence, and greater awareness of the ill effects of smoking are factors associated with the intention to cease smoking sometime in the future. The study found that prevalence of intention to initiate smoking is low among non-smokers while the majority of current smokers intended to cease smoking in the future. Existing anti-smoking programmes that integrate the factors that have been identified in the current study should be put in motion to reduce the prevalence of intention to initiate smoking and increase the intention to cease smoking among adolescents.
Because of space constraints of the ship, accessibility to supporting system for nonsmoking is poor in seafarers' group. This study was performed to find the smoking status, second-hand smoking status and factors related to smoking habit of Korean seafarers. So, we examined the rate of smoking and secondhand smoking, and knowledge about smoking, attitude for smoking behavior, smoking cessation intention and working environment related to smoking of 155 seafarers. Their smoking rate was 32.3% and secondhand smoke rate was very high by 86.5%. Their working place equipped a separate smoking room, but most of them had been smoked in where they were stayed. and we found the inadequate ventilation facility in 42.6%. Only 21.9% had a experience of education for smoking cessation. From the study Attitude for smoking behavior was negative and smoking knowledge was high. 90% of them tried to stop to smoke, but intention of smoking cessation was low. We need to motivate seafarers and increase their smoking cessation intention by regular education in available ways. From the study, we purpose that government will realign regulations related to ventilation facility and appointed smoking area on the board to prevent seondhand smoke, and the policy need to possess the regular survey of smoking status and customized smoking cessation education for seafarers.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to identify the factors related with the intention of smoking abstinence among elementary students in a metropolitan city in Korea. Methods: All the elementary schools in the city were stratified by region, and then schools as a primary sampling units (PSU) were selected by probability proportional to size (PPS) sampling. One class per grade was sampled randomly from 5th and 6th grade in the sampled schools from October to December in 2004. The students completed a standardized self-administered questionnaire anonymously. A total number of 1,712 respondents who did not smoke was included in the final analysis. The dependent variable was an intention of smoking in the future, and it was dichotomized into 'absolutely confident in smoking abstinence' and 'others'. The risk of non-absolute confidence in smoking abstinence was calculated with simple and multiple logistic regression, which were conducted with STATA 9.0 by a design-based analysis considering strata variable, PSU, and sampling weight. Results: In the final model of multiple logistic regression analysis, those who were more likely to have non-absolute confidence in smoking abstinence were male students (OR=2.66, p<0.001); barely attending religious services (OR=3.32, p=0.002) or having no religion (OR=1.95, p=0.027); exposure to environmental tobacco smoke outside home 1${\sim}$2 days per week (OR=1.60, p=0.013); having friends who smoked (OR=1.93, p=0.011); non-absolute confidence in refusing to smoke (OR=5.35, p<0.001); having relatively less negative attitude (OR=2.88, p<0.001), positive attitude (OR=2.35, p<0.001), and indifference (OR=4.05, p=0.034) toward peer smoking; not good relationship with mother (OR=1.52, p=0.016). Conclusion: The factors related with non-absolute confidence in smoking abstinence were coincided with those of smoking among children. The results of this study suggest the smoking prevention education should be applied to the children more actively, especially who are not confident in smoking abstinence in the future.
Purpose: This study was done to investigate factors affecting preparation stage to quit smoking in men. Methods: Based on data from the Community Health Survey conducted in Chungbuk Province in 2008, we estimated rates and odds ratio (OR) of smoking cessation intention for 2,639 men who were current smokers. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to identify factors affecting preparation stage to quit smoking. Results: Among current male smokers, the rate of smoking cessation intention was 17.1%. The OR of factors affecting smoking cessation was as follows: Compared to men with middle school education, the OR for rate of smoking cessation intention in men with high school education was 1.47 (p=.018), and for college or higher, 1.55 (p=.017). Compared to being single, the OR for cohabitation after marriage was 1.61 (p=.011) and living alone after marriage, 2.23 (p=.005). The OR for attempt to quit smoking, exposure to secondhand smoke and participation in smoking education were 6.80 (p<.001), 1.32 (p=.020) and 1.69 (p=.005), respectively. Conclusion: Results of this study show that it is necessary to decrease exposure to secondhand smoke and to increase participation in smoking cessation education targeting current smokers to move them from precontemplation or contemplation stage to preparation stage.
This study was conducted to investigate determinants of intention of smoking cessation behavior. We sampled 204 university student smokers using questionaires and analyzed the data using the t-test, ANOVA, Pearson product-moment correlation, and multiple regression. The results are as follows: 1. The attitudes concerning smoking cessation behavior are related to a student's course of study, religion and is further related to whether or not they tried to stop smoking. The subjective norm is related to smoking cessation recommendations. Perceived behavioral control is related to a growth criterion, the smoking amount and whether or not they have tried to stop smoking. The intention of smoking cessation behavior is related to smoking amount and whether or not they nare tried to stop smoking. 2. Total symptom number is related to smoking amount and smoking period. 3. Total symptom number is related to behavioral belief, attitude, and the intention to stop smoking. In conclusion, it was found that university students smoke far too much, however the intention to stop smoking is very low. Therefore, an intention promoting program of smoking cessation behavior is needed to reduce the smoking rate and relaxation therapy is necessary for in changing health promoting habits.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of smoking prevention program on changing the knowledge and attitude about smoking behavior of elementary school students, In September 1993, as a pretest, a total of 1492 students from 4 elementary schools in Seoul were assessed with self-completing questionnaire pertaining to knowledge and attitude about smoking. Among them, 704 students from 2 schools were assigned to intervention group and 788 students from other 2 schools were assigned to control group. Smoking prevention program was implemented in intervention group for about six months. In September 1994, as a posttest, all students were reassessed with the same questionnaire. The overall experimental smoking rate of students in the study was 8.0%; 13.4% in males and 2.9% in females. The baseline smoking knowledge score of intervention group and control group was 12.3 and 12.0, respectively. There was no significant difference between the two groups. But each score collected after one year interval was 15.3 and 13.0, respectively, which were significantly different(p<0.01). The main items of attitude, such as 'future intention to smoke', were not significantly changed by the intervention. Important predictors of 'future intention to smoke' in males were past history of experimental smoking, paternal smoking and knowledge about smoking. In females, past history of experimental smoking and knowledge about smoking were important predictors.

Background: The prevalence of smoking among secondary school children continues to remain unchanged over the last 3 decades even though awareness regarding the health effects of smoking is increasing. Common misconceptions about smoking and parental influence could be factors influencing future intentions to smoke among these students. Hence, we looked at the common misconceptions as well as student perceptions about their future intention to smoke among Form 4 students in Shah Alam, Malaysia. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted by distribution of a questionnaire developed as part of the Global Youth Tobacco Survey to Form 4 student in 3 schools at Shah Alam. Results: Prevalence of smoking (current smokers) was 7.5%. Almost half of the children came from families where one or both parents smoked and a third of the parents had no discussion regarding consequences of smoking with them. A large number of students were classified as "triers" as they had tried smoking and were unsure of whether they would not be smoking in the future. Contrary to our expectations, students generally felt smoking did make one feel more uncomfortable and helped one to reduce body weight. Most students seemed to be aware of the ill-effects of smoking on health. They felt they had received adequate information from school regarding the effects on smoking on health. Conclusions: Our study showed that even though Form 4 students in Shah Alam were knowledgeable about ill-effects of smoking and were taught so as part of their school curriculum, the prevalence of smoking was still high. Students in the "trier group" represent a potential group of future smokers and strategies targeting tobacco control may be aimed at tackling these vulnerable individuals. Efforts are also needed to help educate secondary school children about common misconceptions and dispel myths associated with cigarette smoking.

Purpose: This study was done to explore the predictors asssociated with Korean women smokers' intentions to quit smoking. Methods: This study was a cross-sectional study including 3,578 women smokers. Data from the 2010 Community Health Survey conducted by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention were examined and analyzed using SPSS 21.0 for multiple logistic regression. Results: Of the women smokers 52.2% reported having an intention to quit smoking but only 3.9% had received education in smoking cessation. In the logistic analysis, factors associated with intention to quit smoking were age (Odds ratio and 95% [confidence interval]: 0.97 [0.96-0.98]), health-related quality of life (OR=2.39 [1.14-5.03]), perceived stress (OR=1.11 [1.00-1.22]), marital status (OR=0.93 [.86-1.00]), age of starting to smoke (OR=1.14 [1.04-1.24]), number of cigarettes per day (OR=0.84 [0.76-0.93]), exposure to smoking-quitting campaigns (OR=1.48 [1.22-1.80]), previous attempts at weight-control (OR=1.37 [1.15-1.63]), frequency of alcohol use (OR=1.16 [1.01-1.34]), hypercholesterolemia (OR=1.62 [1.18-2.24]), experiences of trying to quit smoking (OR=4.04 [3.45-4.73]), and regular medical check-up (OR=1.13 [1.03-1.43]). Conclusion: Identifying factors associated with the intentions to quit smoking provides possibilities for shaping effective policies and programs to increase smoking cessation among Korean women.
Purpose: This study is to analyze influencing factors of smoking intention among nonsmoking middle school students with regard to smoking attitude, knowledge and social influence. Methods: Data were collected from non smoking students of 5 middle schools in D metropolitan city. The 1,892 enrolled subjects provided informed voluntary consent prior to completing a structural questionnaire covering smoking attitudes, knowledge, social influences and general characteristics. The data were analysed using SPSS/Win 21.0 program by -test and logistic regression analysis. Results: Among the nonsmoking students, 85.5% never had an intention to smoke. In relation to general characteristics, smoking intention was significantly associated with sex, school records, socioeconomic status, relationship with parents, smoking experience, and smokers around them. In relation to attitude, knowledge, and social influence, smoking intention was significantly associated with a lower attitude score, a lower knowledge score, and a lower social norm. In the logistic regression analysis, smoking intention was associated with a lower attitude score (2.99 times), a lower social norm (2.65 times), being male (2.35 times), low socioeconomic status (2.22 times). and having smoking experience (2.70 times). Conclusion: It is needed to develop promotional strategies that could provide adjusted systematic smoking prevention education for the preferred smoking group and afford smoking prevention programs considering subject characteristics to help young adolescents avoid access to smoking in their early age.
