  • This paper proposes a half-mode substrate integrated waveguide (HMSIW) amplifier using lumped-element transition. The input and output impedances of this amplifier are matched by the lumped-element transition structure. This structure provides compact impedance and mode matching circuits between the HMSIW and a stand-alone amplifier. Surface mount technology inductors and capacitors are implemented to realize the lumped-element transition. A prototype of the proposed HMSIW amplifier shows 15 dB gain with 3 dB bandwidth of 4 to 7.05 GHz in a simulation and measurement.

  • A primary-side regulation AC-DC converter operating in the PFM (Pulse Frequency Modulation) mode with a high precision output current is designed, which applies a novel inductance compensation technique to improve the precision of the output current, which reduces the bad impact of the large tolerance of the transformer primary side inductance in the same batch. In this paper, the output current is regulated by the OSC charging current, which is controlled by a CC (constant current) controller. Meanwhile, for different primary inductors, the inductance compensation module adjusts the OSC charging current finely to improve the accuracy of the output current. The operation principle and design of the CC controller and the inductance compensation module are analyzed and illustrated herein. The control chip is implemented based on a TSMC 0.35μm 5V/40V BCD process, and a 12V/1.1A prototype has been built to verify the proposed control method. The deviation of the output current is within ±3% and the variation of the output current is less than 1% when the inductances of the primary windings vary by 10%.

  • This paper presents high performance MEMS passives using fully CMOS compatible, monolithically integrable 3-D RF MEMS processes for RF and microwave applications. The 3-D RF MEMS technology has been developed and investigated as a viable technological option, which can break the limit of the conventional IC technology. We have demonstrated the versatility of the technology by fabricating various 3-D thick-metal microstructures for RF and microwave applications, such as spiral/solenoid inductors, transformers, and transmission lines, with a vertical dimension of up to $100{\;}\mu\textrm{m}$. To the best of our knowledge, we report that we are the first to construct a fully integrated VCO with MEMS inductors, which has achieved a low phase noise of -124 dBc/Hz at 300 kHz offset from a center frequency of 1 GHz.

  • In this paper, the field solver based deembedding technique for the on-chip inductors to deembed the pad and surrounding ground effect was described, and the results from field solver based deembedding techniques and measurement based matrix calculation method were compared. In addition, LNA circuit is designed by using deembedded inductors and fabricated by using standard $0.25{\mu}m$ CMOS process, in the range over the 2.5GHz it shows the good agreements between measurement and simulation results when the proper deembedding was adapted. Supposed deembedding techniques can be used to get the pure on-chip devices's values and adapted to design accurate RFIC circuit design.

  • This paper presents a simple process to integrate thin-film inductors with a bottom NiFe magnetic core. NiFe thin films with a thickness of 2 to 3${\mu}m$ were deposited by sputtering. A polyimide buffer layer and shadow mask were used to relax the stress of the NiFe films. The fabricated double spiral thin-film inductor showed an inductance of 0.49${\mu}H$ and a Q factor of 4.8 at 8 MHz. The DC-DC converter with the monolithically integrated thin-film inductor showed comparable performances to those with sandwiched magnetic layers. We simplified the integration process by eliminating the planarization process for the top magnetic core. The efficiency of the DC-DC converter with the monolithic thin-film inductor was 72% when the input voltage and output voltage were 3.5 V and 6 V, respectively, at an operating frequency of 8 MHz.

  • In this paper, we present a frequency tunable and compact antenna which consists of a first-order Peano curve, two shorting posts, and two inductors which are serially connected between the posts and the edge of the Peano curve. By properly choosing the inductance of two inductors, the operating frequency of the antenna can be controlled without sacrificing the fractional bandwidth. To give good demonstration of the operating mechanism, the equivalent circuit of this antenna is included. To validate the simulation results, we have fabricated the several antennas of being integrated with different inductors, and the measured results show a good agreement with the simulated ones. The measured results reveal that the operating frequency is shifted from 1.47 GHz to 0.586 GHz without the decrease of the input impedance bandwidth. In case of integrating two inductors of 91nH and 470nH, the electric size of the antenna is only $0.0246 {\lambda}{\times}0.0246{\lambda}{\times}0.0114{\lambda}$. The measured fractional bandwidth$(S_{11}{\leq}-10 dB)$ and the radiation efficiency of the antenna are 5.22% and 47.25%, respectively.

  • This paper proposes an energy storage-assisted, series-connected module-integrated power conversion system that integrates a photovoltaic power conditioner and a charge balancing circuit. In conventional methods, a photovoltaic power conditioner and a cell-balancing circuit are needed for photovoltaic systems with energy storage devices, but they cause a complex configuration and high cost. Moreover, an imbalanced output voltage of the module-integrated converter for PV panels can be a result of partial shading. Partial shading can lead to the fault condition of the boost converter in shaded modules and high voltage stresses on the devices in other modules. To overcome these problems, a bidirectional buck-boost converter with an integrated magnetic device operating for a charge-balancing circuit is proposed. The proposed circuit has multiple secondary rectifiers with inductors sharing a single magnetic core, which works as an inductor for the main bidirectional charger/discharger of the energy storage. The secondary rectifiers operate as a cell-balancing circuit for both energy storage and the series-connected multiple outputs of the module-integrated converter. The operating principle of the cell-balancing power conversion circuit and the power stage design are presented and validated by PSIM simulation for analysis. A hardware prototype with equivalent photovoltaic modules is implemented for verification. The results verify that the modularized photovoltaic power conversion system in the output series with an energy storage successfully works with the proposed low-cost bidirectional buck-boost converter comprising a single magnetic device.

  • High-performance Si integrated passive process was developed using thick oxidation process and Cu-BCB process. This passive process leads to low-cost and high-quality RF module with a small form factor. The fabricated spiral inductor with 225 um inner diameter and 2.5 turns showed the inductance of 2.7 nH and the quality factor more than 30 in the frequency region of 1 ㎓ and above. Also WLCSP-type integrated passive devices were fabricated using the high-performance spiral inductors. The fabricated low pass filter had a parallel-resonance circuit inside the spiral inductor to suppress 2nd harmonics and showed about 0.5 ㏈ insertion loss at 2.45 ㎓. And also the high/low-pass balun had the insertion loss less than 0.5 ㏈ and the phase difference of 182 degrees at 2.45 ㎓.

  • This paper proposes a three-level LLC resonant converter using integrated magnetics (IM). Given that the switch voltage stress of the proposed converter is guaranteed to be half of the input voltage, the switching losses can be greatly reduced, thereby benefitting the high-frequency operation. To reduce the volume of reactive components such as transformers, high-frequency driving and planar core are applied. However, two resonant inductors and one transformer are required because of the three-level structure and the limited leakage inductance of the planar transformer for the resonant operation. Therefore, the effect of volume reduction is not very large. In order to solve these drawbacks, this paper proposes a new IM that integrates all magnetic elements used in the proposed three-level resonant converter by using the magnetizing inductor as a resonant inductor. The experimental results are presented by conducting a theoretical analysis of a prototype with 350 W to 800 kHz.
