Susceptibilities of German Cockroach, Blattella germanica to Insecticides According to Application Methods (바퀴에 대한 처리방법에 따른 살충제 감수성)

  • Susceptibility of Blattella germanica male adults to 61 commercial insecticides was evaluated by diet dipping method. Among them three insecticides of dichlorvos, fenitrothion, and fipronil showed over $90\%$ mortality. The insect was more susceptible to dichlorvos and fenitrothion in filter paper contact method than in diet dipping one, but fipronil was vice versa. Toxicities of the three chemicals were evaluated by application parts of the such as head, thorax, abdomen, and legs. Dichlorvos and fenitrothion were more toxic when applied to head, and flpronil was thorax. $LT_{50}$ values by diet dipping method showed that fenitrothion and fipronil acted more rapidly than boric acid and hydramethylnon. The values of the former two were 1.05 and 0.98 days, and those of the latter two were 3.92 and 2.26 days, respectively.

  • Studies were conducted to investigate the effect of Carbofuran 3G on the density variation of rice pests and their natural enemies in case the insecticide was treated two times as compared with usual trials in paddy field. Even the two times application of Carbofuran 3G in the nursery boxes of machine transplanting and paddy water trials obtain same results to pests, small brown planthopper (Laodelphax striatllus), green rice leafhopper (Nephotettix cincticeps), brown planthorper (Nilaparvata lugens), white back planthopper (Sogotella furcifera), rice stem bore (Chilo suppressalis), rice stem maggot (Chlorops oryzae), rice thrips (cloethrips oryzae) as compared with usual trials. The density of natural enemies, spiders and egg parasite, Anagrus sp. of planthoppers in the two times application part of Carbofuran 3G increased 2.4 fold as compared with usual trials.

  • Susceptibility of Periplaneta americana male adults to 61 commercial insecticides was evaluated by diet dipping method. Among them eight insecticides of dichlorvos, benfuracarb, cypermethrin, deltamethrin, fenpropathrin, $\zeta$-cypermethrin, $\lambda$-cyhalothrin and fipronil showed 100% mortality. The insect was more susceptible to dichlorvos and fenpropathrin in filter paper contact method than in diet dipping one, but benfuracarb was vice versa. Toxicities of the seven chemicals were evaluated by application parts of the such as head, thorax, abdomen, and legs. Dichlorvos, benfuracarb and $\lambda$-cyhalothrin were more toxic when applied to head, and deltamethrin, fenpropathrin and cypermethrin were abdomen. $LT_{50}$ values by diet dipping method showed that dichlorvos, benfuracarb and $\lambda$-cyhalothrin acted more rapidly than boric acid and hydramethylnon. The values of the former three were 0.10, 0.29 and 0.12 days, and those of the latter two were 6.2 and 4.8 days, respectively.

  • The insecticidal activities and residues of chlorfenapyr [4-bromo-2-(4-chlorophenyl)-1-ethoxymethyl-5-trifluorornethyl pyrrole-3-carbonitrile] against Thrips palmi was evaluated under laboratory and vinyl house conditions. Effectiveness of chlorfenapyr against T. palmi on red pepper leaves was lasted for 9 days at a concentration of 50 ppm but there was no significant differences between emulsifiable concentration and wettable granule under laboratory conditions. In vinyl house, high toxicity was investigated at 6 hours after application of chlorfenapyr in a concentration of 50 and 100 ppm and insecticidal effect was maintained for 11days after 2 times weekly application in cucumber. Control effect was above 97% against T. palmi larva and larva+adults after 2 times weekly application in vinyl house.

  • To establish the economical and reliable routine bioassay system for developing new insecticidal compounds, effects of leaf-dipping time, application methods, insect species and their developmental stages on susceptibilities of insects to insecticides were studied. The stable insecticidal activity appeared at the dipping time for 30-60 seconds in leaf-dipping method, and the most effective application methods were leaf-dipping method for apterous green peach aphid adults, and third instars of diamond-back moth and tobacco cutworm, whereas seedling+insect spray method for adults or third instars of brown planthoppers. For two-spotted spider mite, leaf-dipping or intact plant spray method was favorable. In the bioassay for chitin synthesis inhibitors, the inoculation of third instars of brown planthopper, diamond-back moth, tobacco cutworm and green peach aphid, and larvae of two-spotted spider mite to the young host plants treated by spray method were adequate bioassay methods.

Optimal Duration of Determining the Insecticidal Effect of Carbofuran on Nilaparvata lugens Using Different Application Methods (카보퓨란 처리 방법 별 벼멸구에 대한 살충 효과 판별 최적 시기)

  • For determining the insecticidal effect of Carbofuran on the Brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens, sucking toxicity by drenching application, sucking and contact toxicity by leaf dipping application, and contact toxicity by topical application were examined. Drenching caused two types of mortality patterns. One was logarithmic curve at a relatively high concentration (8~30 ppm) with over 40% mortality in 24 h, and the other was an S-shaped curve at low concentrations (1~4 ppm) with over 60% mortality on the fifth day after Carbofuran treatment. Leaf dipping application caused a rapid increase in mortality in a day, and this effect decreased steadily with time. Topical application showed steep increase in mortality in a day, and hardly increased thereafter. The best mortality evaluation time for the drenching application was the second day (42 h), and that for the leaf dipping and topical applications was the first or second day after Carbofuran application. When the insecticide has systemic effects, drench application provides the best efficacy and its insecticidal effects persist for a longer time than any other application method.

  • The influences of applications of organochlorine insecticide (HCH: Hexachlorocyclohexane, 10 ppm), fungicide (TPN: Tetrachloroisophthalonitrile, 40 ppm) and manure ($3Kg/m^2$) each or together on changes in soil microflora for consecutive years were investigated in the experimental field plots. The insecticide had a little effect on soil microbial numbers. In particular, the number of total bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria and fungi were gradually increased at the latter stage of the consecutive application, but the number of sporeforming bacteria reduced. The fungicide reduced the counts of sporeforming bacteria, actinomycetes and fungi respectively, whereas increased prominently the counts of total bacteria and Gram-negative bacteria. TPN-resistant bacteria, particulary TPN-resistant Gram-negative bacteria were gradually accumulated by the long-term application of TPN, and further the number of TPN-resistant total bacteria and the of TPN-resistant Gram-negative bacteria correlated fairly well during all the period. The influences of combined applications of both HCH and TPN on the number of soil microorganisms were equal to the respective sums of the effects of single application of each pesticide. The combined application of manure and these pesticides elevated the increasing extents of microbial numbers, while weakened the detrimental efforts of these pesticides on microbial numbers. These data suggest that the long-term application of these materials have resulted in the remarkable changes of composition of soil microflora.

An aspect of quarantine insect pest occurrence with different management system in sweet persimmon orchard (단감원의 방제 체계에 따른 검역대상 해충 발생 양상)

  • Temporary control schedules were tested at sweet persimmon orchards to development new control programs to meet the quarantine repuirements of America in 2001 and 2002. The 'MRL-type control orchards' were sprayed with chemicals which were possibly adaptable to the pome trees in America. A control schedule consisted of those chemicals registered for persimmon in Korea was incorporated in the 'domestic-type control orchards'. The efficacy of these two control type against insect pests was compared with that of a conventional control schedule. In 2001, MRL orchard and domestic orchard were sprayed 7 and 6 times, and two conventional orchards were 6 and 9 times, respectively. In 2002, acaricide was added once to the MRL orchards at late September to reduce the density of mites on harvested fruits. However no insecticide to plant bug control could be applied to the MRL orchards, because no insecticide against bugs was registered for pome trees in America. This resulted in 7 times of applications in MRL and domestic orchards. The conventional orchard was sprayed 9 times. Only the occurrence of the peach pyralid moth, Dichocrocis puntiferalis (PPM) out of 4 quarantine inset species was observed. The PPM was observed during growing season in MRL, domestic, and conventional orchards. However no fruits damaged by PPM larvae were observed after mid October and after harvest. In 2002 only 1 fruit out of 1,350 fruits inspected in June was damaged by the larvae of PPM at MRL orchards. A fungus-feeding mites and collembolan were under calyx of vested fruits. In 2001 they were found on 45.3% of harvested fruits at MRL orchard. However the percentage of fruits with mites in 2002 was greatly reduced to 3.5% at MRL orchard, presumably because of a added application of acaricide at late September. However percentage of fruits damage by hemipteran bugs at harvesting time was quite high 11.3 % at MRL orchards, because no application of insecticide against plant bugs.

  • The relative toxicity of some of the insecticides which have been used for the control of paddy rice insect pests in Korea was evaluated in the laboratory with the brown planthopper (BPH) Nilaparvata lugens, and a predaceous paddy spider Pirata subpiraticus. In order of the relative toxicity (LD5O value to spider/LD50 value to BPH) were PAP (0.4), MPP(0.1), MEP(1.8), diazinon(2.8), carbofuran(7.5), NAC(11.3), BPMC(17.5), Pyridaphenthion(35.9) and MIPC(65.7). MIPC and Pyridaphenthion were considered as having the desirable selective toxicity for the spider and the BPH.

Effects of Alachlor and Endosulfan on the Survival and Malformation of Bombina orientalis Embryos (제초제 Alachlor과 살충제 Endosulfan이 무당개구리 (Bombina orientalis) 배아의 생존 및 기형유발에 미치는 영향)

  • The chloroacetanilide herbicide alachlor (2-chloro-2', 6'-diethyl-N-(methoxymethyl)-acetanilide) and organochlorine insecticide endosulfan (6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 10-hexachloro-l, 5, 5a, 6, 9, 9a-hexahydro-6, 9-methano-2, 3, 4-benzodioxathiepin-3-oxide)are the highly toxic agricultural chemicals. Bombina orientalis is one of the most common amphibians in the world and comprises a large proportion of their total number. B. orientalis spawns in the farming regions at Spring when the massive application of agricultural chemicals occurs. These chemicals in farmland may threaten the reproduction of this frog. Therefore, we examined the embryotoxic and survival effects of alachlor and endosulfan at various concentrations in B. orientalis embryos. The survival rates of embryos at 312h post fertilization treated with alachlor and endosulfan were decreased with concentration dependent manner. Also, developmental malformations appeared by alachlor and endosulfan in B. orientalis embryos. The malformations showed in order of frequency with bent trunk, tail dysplasia, bent tail, thick-set body and ventral blister in alachlor treated embryos. The exposure of endosulfan produced 7 types of severe external malformations with tail dysplasia, pectoral blister, bent trunk, bent tail, cephalic dysplasia, ventral blister, and thick-set body. Following exposure to alachlor and endosulfan the types of malformations were diverse, suggesting these chemicals target multiple events in embryonic and larval development in this species. These results suggested that alachlor and endosulfan were detrimental for survival and development of B. orientalis embryos.
