Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify relations among the parenting stress, maternal sensitivity to infant cues, parenting environment of first-time mothers. Method: The participants were 194 first-time mothers of babies aged 1-6 months who visited well-baby clinics in 5 hospitals. The data were collected from April 15 to June 15, 2003. Results: The parenting stress level was moderate with a mean score of 2.4(range 1-5). The parent domain and parent-child relationship domain of the parenting stress scale were significantly correlated with maternal sensitivity to infant feeding cues (r=-.178, p<.05; r=-.197, p<.01). Parenting stress was significantly correlated with childrearing environment(r=-2.19, p<.01). Parenting stress and childrearing environment were significantly different according to the educational level of the mothers and their prenatal care. Conclusions: Nursing interventions to reduce parenting stress in first-time mothers are needed to improve maternal sensitivity to infant cues and childrearing environment which foster infant development.
In present study, using longitudinal data of 161 families from Durham Child and Development Study, we examine the characteristics of infant child care chosen by families of different income levels and ethnicity in the U.S. Time-related changes in child care selection for the first year of the child's life were also investigated. Infants from high-income families were more likely to be cared for by someone other than the mother, compared to infant from lower-income families. African-American families were more likely to use non-maternal care for their infant compared to European-American families. Although the effects of income on type of care were not significant, descriptively, more low-income families used relative care while high-income families used more formal arrangements such as daycare center. Infants from low-income families began care earlier and low-income families paid less for care than other families. The findings call for attention to the importance of child care policy for low-income families as well as further research examining the function of cultural differences in selection of infant child care.
Purpose: This study examined the effects of an educational program for fathers on improving father-infant interactions, child-rearing knowledge, and attachment. Methods: In this quasi-experimental study, the participants were recruited by convenience sampling among fathers with infants (2-6 months of age) residing in three districts of Seoul. Fifteen participants in the experimental group and 17 participants in the control group completed the follow-up investigation. A 5-week online and offline intervention program with five sessions was provided to the experimental group. The data were analyzed using generalized estimating equations (GEEs). Results: There was a significant difference in the change in father-infant interaction scores of the experimental group, especially in the caregiver aspect with a significance level of .100 in time and group-to-group interactions (B=6.46, p=.051, 95% confidence interval [CI]=-0.02-12.94). The changes between the groups and times were not statistically significant when it came to infant development knowledge and father-infant attachment. Conclusion: We conclude that hybrid online and offline education should be implemented as an effective method to improve fathers' interactions with their children based on accurate knowledge about infant development.
This study investigated parenting knowledge, interactions between mother and infant, and relationship between mother's parenting knowledge and mother-infant interaction by mothers' demographic variables. Subjects were 311 mothers. Instruments were the Knowledge of Child Development Inventory (Larsen & Juhasz, 1986) and the Assessment Profile for Early Childhood programs (Abbott-Shim & Sibely, 1987). Data were analyzed by t-test and ANOVA. Results showed (1) differences about parenting knowledge by mothers' employment status, age and education level, (2) differences in mother-infant interaction by mothers' age and education level, (3) parenting knowledge about physical development correlated positively with positive interaction, linguistic modeling, and sensitive response knowledge about linguistic and cognitive development had a large effect on positive mother-infant interaction and linguistic modeling.
Purpose: Falls are a common cause of unintentional injuries in infants. This study was conducted to examine the patterns of healthcare utilization following infant falls in South Korea. Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive study utilized an online survey designed to gather information regarding the general characteristics of parents and infants, fall-related variables, and healthcare use. Results: The most serious falls identified by parents occurred at an average infant age of 6.97 months. Most fall incidents took place indoors (95.7%), and many occurred under the supervision of caregivers (68.0%). Following the fall, 36.4% of the participants used healthcare services. Logistic regression analysis revealed that healthcare use following an infant fall was significantly associated with being a firstborn child (odds ratio [OR]=5.32, 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.19-15.28) and falling from a caregiver's arms (OR=4.22; 95% CI, 1.45-13.68). Conclusion: To prevent and decrease the frequency of infant falls, improvements are needed in both the domestic environment and parenting approaches.
The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of religious maturity of Christian teachers in child care centers on teacher-infant interaction, emotional labor and emotional intelligence. The survey was conducted on 173 Christian teachers of early-child classes who work in child care centers in Gyeonggi-do province. For the research analysis, frequency and Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ coefficient were calculated and regression analysis were conducted. The results are as follows. First, the affective and volitional factors from religious maturity of Christian teachers in child care centers have had a positive influence on the overall teacher-infant interaction. Second, the affective factor from religious maturity of Christian teachers in child care centers have had a negative influence on outward behavior, which is the lower variable of emotional work, and a positive influence on inner behavior. Third, the volitional factor from religious maturity of Christian teachers in child care centers have had a positive influence on perception of self-emotions, perception of others' emotion, emotional application, emotional control, and emotional intelligence overall.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of infant CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) immediate remediation[LAB2]. Methods: This is a quasi-experimental study with a non-equivalent comparison group pre-post test design. Participants were 73 child care teachers in J district in Seoul. The experimental group (35) received immediate remediation with video learning [LAB3]for infant CPR education and the control group (38) received video learning only. We investigated confidence of infant CPR and tested single-rescuer infant CPR performance depending on a checklist (8 items). Data were collected before and right after to evaluate the confidence of infant CPR and before, right after and 2 weeks after the education to evaluate the skill performance and final acceptance. Results: There was a significant increase in confidence of infant CPR in the experimental group and control group. There was a statistically significant difference in the degree of skill performance between groups according to the amount time (F=10.58, p<.001). The degree of skill performance was tested two weeks after the education and immediate remediation was 5.35 times more effective compared to the video image demonstration (B=1.677, p<.001). Conclusion: The findings provide the necessity of immediate remediation education of infant CPR to increase confidence and skill performance ability.
This study explored the relationship between language and play of 42 infants(21 boys and 21 girls) from 13 months to 23 months old and examined how their maternal language and play were related to the infants' language and play. The play of infant-mother and maternal language were videotaped at home. The MacArthur Communicative Development Inventory-Korean(MCDI-K; Fenson, 1991; Pae, 1993) was used to measure infant's language. The score of the infants' receptive language was higher than that of expressive language. Mean level of the infant's play was in the relational play, that is, he/she integrated two or more toys in an inappropriate manner during the play. There was no significant sex difference in the total language scores and in their play. The development of the infant's language was positively correlated with the infant's play level. The maternal language and play were positively correlated with the infant's language and play development.
Purpose: This study was conducted to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of a prenatal parental role education program. Methods: The participants were healthy primiparous women and their healthy newborn babies. 57 mother-infant diads(27 in the intervention group, 30 in the control group). For the intervention group, an additional 4 prenatal parental role education programs and 2 postnatal telephone calls(1st & 3rd week after birth) were provided. Data were analyzed by frequency, chi-square test, t-test and repeated measures ANOVA using SPSS PC+ 10.0 program. Results: Significant differences were found in self-confidence in maternal role performance, mother-infant interaction and infant physical growth between the two groups. This result indicate that the intervention program was effective in improving self-confidence in maternal role performance, mother-infant interaction and in facilitating infant physical growth. Conclusions: The prenatal parental role education program developed by the author was a very effective program in promoting maternal self-confidence, mother-infant interaction, and fostering infant's physical growth at 4 weeks after infant's birth.
