A cautionary note on the use of Cook's distance

  • An influence measure known as Cook's distance has been used for judging the influence of each observation on the least squares estimate of the parameter vector. The distance does not reflect the distributional property of the change in the least squares estimator of the regression coefficients due to case deletions: the distribution has a covariance matrix of rank one and thus it has a support set determined by a line in the multidimensional Euclidean space. As a result, the use of Cook's distance may fail to correctly provide information about influential observations, and we study some reasons for the failure. Three illustrative examples will be provided, in which the use of Cook's distance fails to give the right information about influential observations or it provides the right information about the most influential observation. We will seek some reasons for the wrong or right provision of information.

  • We are concerned with the question of servicing warranties for repairable items. During the warranty period, each time an item fails the manufacturer has the obligation to restore the item to operational condition either by repairing the item or by replacing it by a new item. In this paper, we consider the repair-replacement strategies based on the condition of the failed item. For products with phase-type lifetime distributions where the phases represent the condition of the item, we develop algorithms to determine the expected cost of servicing a warranty and use it in making the repair-replacement decision. Illustrative numerical examples are presented. We also propose a dynamic strategy by taking the expected remaining warranty cost into consideration.

  • To cope with the challenge from global market characterized by frequent changes in requirements, manufacturing enterprise should be able to promptly adjust its manufacturing system accordingly. Therefore, it is important to provide manufacturing system designer with an appropriate methodology to (re-)design a manufacturing system subject to requirements change. Axiomatic design theory focuses design activity mainly on functional consideration rather than physical, and has been known as effective especially in the conceptual design phase. This paper introduces an approach to apply the axiomatic design principle to manufacturing system design. It is shown that a new design solution can be reached quickly by finding design parameters for the added or revised functional requirements and thus achieving a set of functional requirements as well as design parameters that satisfy the independence axiom. Some illustrative examples are also given.

  • This paper presents a new systematic approach to find a global solution to economic dispatch (ED) with multiple fuel units using a function merger (FM). Currently, no systematic approach has been developed to find a global solution to economic dispatch with multiple fuel units. Various heuristic methods have been proposed, however it is almost impossible to guarantee a global solution by those methods yet. The proposed method uses the FM and $\lambda$-P functions. A FM merges several fuel cost functions into one that satisfies the optimal conditions of an ED. The FM procedures are described in detail with illustrative examples.

  • Due to the importance of lead time demand in the design of inventory management systems, researchers and practitioners have paid continuous attention and a few analytic models using the compound distribution approach have been reported. However, since the nature of compound distributions is hardly amenable, the analytic models have been done by non‐recognition of the compound nature of some components to reduce the analytic task. This study concerns some of the important aspects in the analytic models. Through the theoretic examination of the analytic model approach and the comparison with the rigid compound stochastic process approach, this study clarifies the assumptions implicitly made by the analytic models and provides some precautions in using the analytic models. Illustrative examples are also presented.

  • Let D be an integral domain and S a multiplicative subset of D. An ascending chain (Ik)k∈ℕ of ideals of D is said to be S-stationary if there exist a positive integer n and an s ∈ S such that for each k ≥ n, sIk ⊆ In. As a generalization of domains satisfying ACCP (resp., ACC on ∗-ideals) we define D to satisfy S-ACCP (resp., S-ACC on ∗-ideals) if every ascending chain of principal ideals (resp., ∗-ideals) of D is S-stationary. One of main results of this paper is the Hilbert basis theorem for an integral domain satisfying S-ACCP. Also we investigate the class of such domains D and we generalize some known related results in the literature. Finally some illustrative examples regarding the introduced concepts are given.

  • This paper considers the design of the effective controllers for the plant with an integrator and a long deadtime. The structure of the new DTC(DeadTime Compensator) that has an additive filter is proposed. Our DTC shows the improved performance in set-point response and disturbance rejection. Especially the bad effect of the long deadtime in the disturbance rejection is fairly reduced by using the additive filter. Illustrative examples are provided to show the availability of the proposed controller.

  • An Economic selection of specification limits is considered for a given target value in a complete inspection plan. Each item is inspected, and if it meets the specification, it is accepted. Items less than the lower specification limit are scrapped or sold at a reduced price, and those greater than the upper specification limit are reworked. Cost factors to be considered are economic loss caused by quality deviations, rework cost and scrapping cost. Methods for finding the optimal specification limits are given for the cases of piecewise linear loss function and quadratic loss function with illustrative examples.

  • This paper proposes a methodology to estimate the system coefficients for the infinite impulse response(IIR) digital filters using real code GA. In the traditional real coded GA, it adapts the general genetic operations, whereas in this paper the proposed real coded GA applies improved genetic operations in order to search the optimal solution in given problems. Each of unknown IIR digital coefficients collected as forms of a chromosome. Two illustrative examples including the band pass and band stop IIR digital filters are demonstrated to verify the proposed method.
