The present paper deals with the comparative study of resistance performance with refrigerated ice and synthetic ice according to the variation of hull form characteristics. The resistance test has been conducted in pack ice condition in each concentration condition. Stem angle has been chosen as main parameters for the variation of hull form characteristics. The correlation of performance between with the refrigerated ice and with the synthetic ice has been shown according to the variation for stem angles. The present study show the possibility of ice test in general towing tank with synthetic ice for the time-consuming research such as hull form optimization although that is confined in pack ice condition. The more parametric study for the properties of synthetic ice is expected to be conducted to have more close correspondence for the test results of refrigerated ice in near future.
The present paper deals with characteristics of resistance performance according to the variation of synthetic ice thickness and hull form. The resistance test has been conducted with pack ice condition in Pusan National University towing tank. Waterline angle has been chosen as a main parameter for the variation of hull form characteristics, which is the most important factor especially in icebreaking cargo vessel. The serial comparisons of resistance test have been done with the variation of hull form parameter as well as with the different thickness of synthetic ice. The different trend of resistance performances with increasing of waterline angle has been shown at each synthetic ice thickness. The present test results is expected to be confirmed by comparing the test results in ice tank in the near future.
There have been many attempts to predict resistance of vessels in ice floe environment, but they mostly have both strong and weak points at the same time; for instance, simplified formulas are very fast but less flexible to types of ship and ice conditions and other numerical techniques need high computing cost for increased accuracy. A new numerical simulation technique of combining explicit finite element analysis code with a user-subroutine to control real-time forces acting on ice floes was proposed, thereby it was possible to predict ship-to-ice floe resistance with higher convenience and accuracy than other proposed approaches. The basic theory on how real-time hydrostatic and hydrodynamic forces acting on ice floes could be generated using user-subroutine was explained. The heave motion of a single ice floe was simulated using the user-subroutine and the motion amplitudes and periods were almost consistent with analytic values. Towing tests of an icebreaker model ship were simulated using explicit finite element analyses with the user-subroutine. The ice-induced resistance obtained from the towing experiments and simulations showed significant differences. Intentional increase of the drag coefficient to increase the contact duration between the ice floes and rigid model ship leaded the total resistance to be substantially consistent between the model tests and numerical simulations.
The resistance performance of an icebreaking cargo vessel with varied stem angles is investigated numerically and experimentally. Ship-ice interaction loads are numerically calculated based on the fluid structure interaction (FSI) method using the commercial FE package LS-DYNA. Test results obtained from model testing with synthetic ice at the Pusan National University towing tank and with refrigerated ice at the National Research Council's (NRC) ice tank are used to validate and benchmark the numerical simulations. The designed icebreaking cargo vessel with three stem angles ($20^{\circ}$, $25^{\circ}$, and $30^{\circ}$) is used as the target ship for three concentrations (90%, 80%, and 60%) of pack ice conditions. The comparisons between numerical and experimental results are shown and our main conclusions are given.

The finite element method is used to simulate the navigation of an ice-area bulk carrier in broken ice fields. The ice material is defined as elastic, and the simulations are accomplished at four model speeds and three ice concentrations. The movements of ice floes in the simulation are consistent with those in the model test, and the percentage deviation of the numerical ice resistance from the ice resistance in the model test can be controlled to be less than 15 %. The key characteristics of ice loads, including the average ice loads, extreme ice loads, and characteristic frequency, are analyzed thoroughly in a comprehensive manner. Moreover, the effects of sailing speed and ice concentration on the ice loads are analyzed. In particular, the stress distribution of ice floes is presented to help understand how model speed and concentration affect the ice loads. The "ice pressure" phenomenon is observed at 90 % ice concentration, and it is realistically reflected both in the time―and frequency―domain ice force curves.
Interaction of grounded ice ridges with underlying seabed is one of the major considerations in the design of Arctic pipeline system. Previously several ice scour models were developed by researchers to describe the ice scour-seabed interaction mechanism. In this paper, a parametric study on ice scouring mechanism is performed and the limitation of ice scour-seabed interaction models is discussed. Simple laboratory tests are carried out and then the shape pattern of deposited soil around the ice is redefined. New ice scour model assumes trapezoidal cross section based on the field observation data. Ice scour depth and soil resistance forces on seabed are calculated with varying the keel angle of a model ice ridge.

To correctly estimate ice load and ice resistance for a ship's hull, it is essential to understand the material properties of sea ice during ice field trials and to use the proper experimental procedure for gathering ice strength data. The first Korean-made icebreaking research vessel (IBRV), ARAON, had her second sea ice trial in the Arctic Ocean during July and August of 2010. This paper describes the test procedures used to properly obtain sea ice strength data, which provides the basic information on the ship's performance in an ice-covered sea and can be used to estimate the correct ice load and ice resistance on the IBRV ARAON. The data gathered from three sea ice field trials during the Arctic voyage of the ARAON includes the ice compressive strength, flexural strength, and failure strain of sea ice. This paper analyzes the gathered sea ice data in comparison with data from the first voyage of the ARAON during her Antarctic Sea ice trial in January 2010.

In this paper, a Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method is extended to simulate the ice failure process and ice-ship interactions. The softening elastoplastic model integrating Drucker-Prager yield criterion is embedded into the SPH method to simulate the failure progress of ice. To verify the accuracy of the proposed SPH method, two benchmarks are presented, which include the elastic vibration of a cantilever beam and three-point bending failure of the ice beam. The good agreement between the obtained numerical results and experimental data indicates that the presented SPH method can give the reliable and accurate results for simulating the ice failure progress. On this basis, the extended SPH method is employed to simulate level ice interacting with sloping structure and three-dimensional ice-ship interaction in level ice, and the numerical data is validated through comparing with experimental results of a 1:20 scaled Araon icebreaker model. It is shown the proposed SPH model can satisfactorily predict the ice breaking process and ice breaking resistance on ships in ice-ship interaction.

The resistance performance of an icebreaking cargo vessel in pack ice conditions was investigated numerically and experimentally using a recently developed finite element (FE) model and model tests. A comparison between numerical analysis and experimental results with synthetic ice in a standard towing tank was carried out. The comparison extended to results with refrigerated ice to examine the feasibility of using synthetic ice. Two experiments using two different ice materials gave a reasonable agreement. Ship-ice interaction loads are numerically calculated based on the fluid structure interaction (FSI) method using the commercial FE package LS-DYNA. Test results from model testing with synthetic ice at the Pusan National University towing tank, and with refrigerated ice at the National Research Council's (NRC) ice tank, are used to validate and benchmark the numerical simulations. The designed ice-going cargo vessel is used as a target ship for three concentrations (90%, 80%, and 60%) of pack ice conditions. Ice was modeled as a rigid body but the ice density was the same as that in the experiments. The numerical challenge is to evaluate hydrodynamic loads on the ship's hull; this is difficult because LS-DYNA is an explicit FE solver and the FSI value is calculated using a penalty method. Comparisons between numerical and experimental results are shown, and our main conclusions are given.
