  • RF sputtering process was applied to produce thin hydroxyapatite[HA, Ca10($PO_4$)$_{6}$ $ (OH)_2$films on Ti-6Al-4V alloy substrates. To make a 101.6 mm dia.${\times}$5 mm HA target, the commercial HA powder was first calcinated for 3h at $200^{\circ}C$. A certain amount of the calcinated HA powder was pressed under a pressure of 20,000 psi by the cold isostatic press(CIP) and the pressed HA target was sintered for 6 h at $1,200^{\circ}C$. The effects of different heat treating conditions on the bonding strength between HA thin films and Ti-6Al-4V alloy substrates were studied. Before deposition, the alloy substrates were annealed for 1 h at $850^{\circ}C$ under $3.0${\times}$10^{-3}$ Xtorr, and after deposition, the hydroxyapatite/Ti-6Al-4V alloy thin films were annealed for 1 h at 400, 600 and $800^{\circ}C$ under the atmosphere, respectively. Experimental results represented that the HA thin films on the annealed substrates had higher hardness than non-heat treated substrates before the deposition.

  • Hydroxyapatite (HA) is well known as a biocompatible and bioactive material. HA has been practically applied as bone graft materials in a range of medical and dental fields. In this study, two types of dense hydroxyapatite ceramics were prepared from natural bones and synthetic materials. The biocompatibility of HA ceramics for supporting osteoblast cell growth and cytotoxicity using an in vitro MG-63 cell line model were respectively evaluated. Artificial hydroxyapatite shows relative density of 93% with 1-2 ${\mu}m$ after sintering, but a hydroxyapatite compact derived from bovine bone has low sintered density of 85% with a small content of MgO. Irrespective of the starting raw materials, both types of sintered hydroxyapatite displayed similar biocompatibility in the tests. FE-SEM observations showed that most MG-63 cells had a stellar shape and formed an intercellular matrix containing fibers on sintered HA. The cells were well attached and grown over the HA surface, indicating that there was no toxicity.

  • Hydroxyapatite(HA) was spray-coated to alloy substrate(Ti-6Al-4V) using plasma-spray process for bioceramic application The coating morphology composition and crystallinity were influenced by following process parameters ; stand-off distance spray power level and auxiliary gas pressure. These parameters have been systematically varied in the present study to evaluate their relative influence on the coating qual-ity and to seek an optimum spraying condition. Amorphicity and decomposition of HA increased with stand-off distance and the imperfect coating layer was obtained at the short stant-off distance (55mm). The cry-stallinity of HA coating decreased with spray power level and auxiliary gas pressure but the bond strength between the HA coated layer and Ti alloy substrate increased with the spray power level.

  • For the better success of biomedical implant surgery, we used a modified solution combustion method to synthesize Hydroxyapatite (HA) and Chromium ($Cr^{3+}$) modified Cr-HA with different concentrations of 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5. The Cr-HA nanopowder was characterized by TGA, XRD, SEM-EDS and TEM. The HA and Cr-HA powders were subjected to in vitro biological studies to determine their biocompatibility and hemocompatibility. The cytotoxicity of HA and Cr-HA were evaluated on Hela (Cervical cancer) cells and L929 (mouse fibroblast) cells by using MTT assay. Hemocompatibility studies demonstrated a noticeable haemolytic ratio below 5%, which confirms that these materials are compatible in nature with human blood. The results of the present work confirm that the synthesised HA and Cr-HA are biocompatible and can be extensively used in the biomedical field to improve overall material biological properties.

  • Hydroxyapatite(HA) was prepared from waste tuna bone, and its sintering property and dissolution behavior were investigated. Tuna bone derived-HA powder consisted of mainly HA and small amount of MgO. Porous HA ceramics with sintered density of 79% was obtained by pressureless sintering at $1200^{\circ}C$. Meanwhile, HA ceramics prepared by hot pressing at $1000^{\circ}C$ showed dense microstructure with sintered density of 95%. Immersion test revealed that both porous and dense HA ceramics were stable in liquid environment without distinct evidence of surface dissolution. It may be assumed that the presence of Mg in tuna bone-derived HA may improve dissolution resistance of HA.

  • Introduction: Hydroxyapatite(HA) coating implant can accelerate osseointegration, however, there are many controversies. Materials and Methods: This study examined the early osseointegration of two types of hydroxyapatite coated implants. Twelve adult male miniature pigs (Medi Kinetics Micropigs, Medi Kinetics Co., Ltd., Busan, Korea) were used in this study. In the implants placed in the mandible, a histomorphometric evaluation was performed to evaluate the bone-implant contact (BIC) ratio. Results: The BIC ratio increased with time. TS III HA and Zimmer HA were not significantly different (P>0.05). At 8 weeks, the BIC of Zimmer HA was higher than TS III HA, but there was no significant difference (P>0.05). Conclusion: HA coated implants will accelerate early osseointegration.

  • To increase mechanical properties of the hydroxyapatite/poly (L-lactide) (HA/PLLA) composite which was a potential bone substitute material, HA was modified by the surface grafting with D-lactide (DLA) and the formation of stereocomplexes between components was introduced. The composite films were prepared by the solvent-nonsolvent technique to minimize the precipitation of HA during drying. The structure and properties of the composites were investigated by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimeter, and scanning electron microscopy, and mechanical property measurements. TGA results showed that the amount of DLA grafted on the HA surfaces (g-HA) was 6 wt%. The obtained g-HA exhibited better dispersity in an organic solvent than HA. The formation of stereocomplexes in the composites was confirmed by the change in melting temperature. The mechanical properties of g-HA/PLLA composites were increased, compared to the HA/PLLA composites.

  • Hydroxyapatite (HA), which is an important calcium phosphate mineral, has been applied in orthopedics, dentistry, and many other fields depending upon its morphology. HA can be synthesized with different morphologies through controlling the synthesis method and several parameters. Here, we synthesize various morphologies of HA using two simple methods: hydrothermal combustion and solution combustion. The phase purity of the synthesized HA is confirmed using X-ray diffractometry. It demonstrates that pure phased hydroxyapatite can be synthesized using both methods. The morphology of the synthesized powder is examined using scanning electron microscopy. The effects of pH and temperature on the final powder are also investigated. At $140^{\circ}C$, using the hydrothermal method, nano-micro HA rods with a hexagonal crystal structure can be synthesized, whereas using solution combustion method at $600^{\circ}C$, a dense cubic morphology can be synthesized, which exhibits monoclinic crystal structures.

  • Hydroxyapatite (HA) ceramics with the Ca/P ratios of 1.62, 1.67 and 1.72 were prepared and their dissolution behaviors in distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$ were investigated. It appeared that surface dissolution of the ceramics was initiated from grain boundaries after 3 days of immersion in water. Following 10 days of immersion, microstructural disintergration of HA was severs for non-stoichiometric compounds, I.e Ca/P ratios of 1.62 and 1.72. Notably, a micron-sized circular cavity similar to lacunae, which can be generally formed in osteoclastic resorption process, was observed.

  • Hydroxyapatite(HA)-coated metal composites were made by the dipping method. The specimen substrates were Ti plates with a thickness of 2 mm. The HA coating was carried out in HA-sol for 1 min by the dipping method. The concentration of HA-sol for the coating ranged from 3.28 to 9.99 wt%. Excellent coating was observed on Ti substrate dipped once in 9.99 wt% sol. Preparation of Ti plates by sandblasting provided the better environment for coating HA on Ti surface than non-treated surface. As the concentration of sol increased, the weight change and the coating thickness increased. Above 7 wt% sol, they increased sharply.
