Dae Dong Stream basin has been selected and operated as a representative experimental basin of UNESCO IHP since year 2007. It is located at Daejeon Metropolitan city, Korea and hydrologic data such as precipitation, runoff, and water quality have been being collected and provided after establishing the monitoring plan as an experimental basin for city/disaster prevention. In this study, runoff characteristics for non-point sources of rainfall-runoff process from urban stream basins were analyzed using the flow and water quality data measured during the year 2011. As an operation result for the test subjected basin, rating curves at Panam Bridge and at Chulgap Bridge were prepared, and to compare runoff characteristics of non-point source by precipitation, by estimating the Event Mean Concentration(EMC) for 10 water quality items, runoff characteristics of non-point source per different observation points as per the precipitation, antecedent rainfall, and land utilization status were analyzed.
Hydrologic time series has been analyzed and forecasted by using classical linear models. However, there is growing evidence of nonlinear structure in natural phenomena and hydrologic time series associated with their patterns and fluctuations. Therefore, the classical linear techniques for time series analysis and forecasting may not be appropriate for nonlinear processes. Daily streamflow series at St. Johns river near Cocoa, Florida, USA showed an interesting result of a low dimensional, nonlinear dynamical system but daily inflow at Soyang reservoir, South Korea showed stochastic property. Based on the chaotic dynamical characteristic, DVS (deterministic versus stochastic) algorithm is used for short-term forecasting, as well as for exploring the properties of the system. In addition to the use of DVS algorithm, a neural network scheme for the forecasting of the daily streamflow series can be used and the two techniques are compared in this study. As a result, the daily streamflow which has chaotic property showed much more accurate result in short term forecasting than stochastic data.
To minimize the negative alterations in hydrologic and water quality environment in urban areas due to urbanization, Low Impact Development (LID) techniques are actively applied. In Korea, LID facilities are classified as Non-point Pollution Reduction Facilities (NPRFs), and therefore they are evaluated using the performance evaluation method for NPRFs. However, while LID facilities are generally installed in small, distributed configuration and mainly work with the infiltration process, the existing NPRFs are installed on a large scale and mainly work with the reservoir process. Therefore, some limitations are expected in assessing both facilities using the same method as they differ in properties. To solve these problems, in this study, a new method for performance evaluation was proposed with focus on bio-retention LID facilities. EPA SWMM was used to reproduce the hydrologic and water quality phenomena in study area, and SWMM-LID module used to simulate TP interception performance by installing a bio-retention cell under various conditions through long-term simulations. Finally, an empirical formula for Load Capture Ratio (LCR) was derived based on storm water interception ratio in the same form as the existing method. Using the existing formula in estimating the LCR is likely to overestimate the performance of interception for non-point pollutants in the extremely low design capacity, and also underestimate it in the moderate and high design capacity.

Recently, increasing heavy rainfalls due to climate change and/or variability result in hydro-climatic disasters being accelerated. To cope with the extreme rainfall events in the future, hydrologic frequency analysis is usually used to estimate design rainfalls in a design target year. The rainfall data series applied to the hydrologic frequency analysis is assumed to be stationary. However, recent observations indicate that the data series might not preserve the statistical properties of rainfall in the future. This study incorporated the residual analysis and the hydrologic frequency analysis to estimate design rainfalls in a design target year considering the non-stationarity of rainfall. The residual time series were generated using a linear regression line constructed from the observations. After finding the proper probability density function for the residuals, considering the increasing or decreasing trend, rainfalls quantiles were estimated corresponding to specific design return periods in a design target year. The results from applying the method to 14 gauging stations indicate that the proposed method provides appropriate design rainfalls and reduces the prediction errors compared with the conventional rainfall frequency analysis which assumes that the rainfall data are stationary.
The purpose of this study is to elucidate the source of U anormaly formed in stream water of the drainage system around the Shinbo talc mine area based on the hydrochemical properties of water masses including surface water and groundwater. The hydrochemical properties of water masses in the Shinbo talc mine area are divide into three types; Type I : $Ca(Mg)SO_4$ type with high U content as shown in the stream water flowout from the mine, Type II : $Ca(HCO_3)_2$ type with high U content as in deep groundwater, Type III : $Ca(HCO_3)_2$, type with low U content as in the other stream water and shallow groundwater. It is necessary to emphasize that in deducing the uranium source, a distinct discrimination between type I and type II is showed in their hydrothermal properties in spite of commonly having a high uranium content, which in turn means the occurrence of a different water-rock interaction processes between both type. All evidences suggest that type II groundwater have acted as a primary media in the transport of uranium and that, as the groundwater flows through the talc mineralization zone, water composition of type II was transformed into that of type I water as the results of a secondary water rock interaction process, caused by imposition of new mineralogically controlled thermodynamic constraints. Consequently, in the viewpoint of hydrochemical exploration, the investigation of the hydrologic circulation system and the hydrogeologic properties for the aquifer of type II groundwater shall be done first of all and will provide a crucial clue on tracing the uranium mineralization zone occurred in the Shinbo talc mine area.
One of the most important factors for estimating a flood runoff from streams is the lag time. It is well known that the lag time is affected by the morphometric properties of basin which can be expressed by catchment shape descriptors. In this paper, the notion of the geometric characteristics of an equivalent ellipse proposed by Moussa(2003) was applied for calculating the lag time of geomorphologic instantaneous unit hydrograph(GIUH) at a basin outlet. The lag time was obtained from the observed data of rainfall and runoff by using the method of moments and the procedure based on geomorphology was used for GIUH. The relationships between the basin morphometric properties and the hydrological response were discussed based on application to 3 catchments in Korea. Additionally, the shapes of equivalent ellipse were examined how they are transformed from upstream area to downstream one. As a result, the relationship between the lag time and descriptors was shown to be close, and the shape of ellipse was presented to approach a circle along the river downwards. These results may be expanded to the estimation of hydrological response of ungauged catchment.

Empirical mode decomposition (EMD) is applied to analyze time series characterized with nonlinearity and nonstationarity. This decomposition could be utilized to construct finite and small number intrinsic mode functions (IMF) that describe complicated time series, while admitting the Hilbert transformation properties. EMD has the capability of being adaptive, capture local characteristics, and applicable to nonlinear and nonstationary processes. Unlike discrete wavelet transform (DWT), IMF eliminates spurious harmonics and retains meaningful instantaneous frequencies. Examples based on data representing natural phenomena are given to demonstrate highlight the power of this method in contrast and comparison of other ones. A presentation of the energy-frequency-time distribution of these signals found to be more informative and intuitive when based on Hilbert transformation.

This study was initiated to build runoff plots, install soil and water quality monitoring systems and collect background data from the plots and soils to assess runoff the nonpoint source pollution and soil physical change in mountainous soils. Eleven 3 $\times$ 15 m runoff plots and monitoring systems were installed at a field of National Alpine Agricultural Experiment Station to monitor soil physical change, and discharge of nonpoint source pollutant. Corn and potato were cultivated under different fertilizer, tillage and residue cover treatments. The soil has a single-layered cluster structure that has a relatively good hydrologic properties and can adsorb a large amount of nutrient. 11 runoff plots were treated and monitored with respect to physical property of the soil, runoff and sediment discharge.

This study was carried out to investigate the characteristics of the field-saturated hydraulic conductivity$(K_{fs})$ and matric flux potential$({\Phi}_m)$ measured by the Guelph Permeameter at the Backokpo watershed in the Han river and at the Bangdong watershed in the Keum river. And the Alpha $({\alpha})$ value which is the ratio of $K_{fs}$ to ${\Phi}_m$ were determined and the ${\alpha}$ values along with the defined soil series could be utilized to classify the soil in the Korean watershed into the SCS hydrologic soil groups.
The purpose of this research is reconstruction of annual precipitation based on Tree-ring series at Seorak mountain and examine its effectiveness. To do so we performed nonlinear time series characteristics test of Tree-ring series and reconstructed annual precipitation of Gangneung from 1687 to 1911 using Artificial neural network and Nonlinear autoregressive exogeneous input (NARX) model which reflects stochastic properties. As a result, Tree-ring series at Seorak Mountain shows nonlinear time series property and reconstructed annual precipitation series drawn from NARX is similar in statistical characteristics of observed annual time series.
